Pusha T has a new mixtape/album thing out entitled Darkest Before Dawn, and true to his character, it’s mostly about dealing drugs and being a bad dude. We discuss whether we should enjoy an artist so thoroughly committed to a kingpin persona (we do), or be more wary of the villainous qualities in his music.

Sunday Oldskool - Sunday Oldskool Episode 83: Catching Up with Kanye
play

A lot has happened with Kanye West since we last discussed his work. We catch you up, discussing the 2015 non-album releases, speculating on how good his upcoming “SWISH” album will be both musically and spiritually, and throw in a sermonette on work ethic and idolatry as pertains to Mr. West.

Sunday Oldskool - Sunday Oldskool Episode 88: Reminiscing
play

03/14/16 • -1 min

After checking back in with the state of justice in Ferguson, Sam and Cray listen to “T.R.O.Y.” by Pete Rock and CL Smooth. The classic track helps them reminisce about their own past, and frames a positive synthesis of the past toward future hopes that should be familiar to Christians who take seriously God’s promise of generational love.

This week, we look back at a simpler time when Run the Jewels 2 released in their first album in February of 2015. Sam and Cray dig into a track off their first album in this episode. Killer Mike and El-P get after corruption, commercialism, idols, and demonic forces (really!) in “A Christmas F***ing Miracle.” The duo also beef some with the title and the lukewarm calls to worship, but we love the song, which is more evidence that Killer Mike gets it.

Sam and Cray play catch up after their time off. They round up hip hop news from the last few weeks: is Dee-1 being persecuted by his own label? Native American culture meets hip hop. Mac Miller as an extension of human brokenness. Are songwriters under appreciated in rap? Drake as understood by college kids.

And finally, Cray gets grumpy about a pet peeve and the k-os track “Crucify”.

Sunday Oldskool - Sunday Oldskool Episode 86: The Life of Pablo, pt. 2
play

02/29/16 • -1 min

We continue our examination of Kanye West’s album, The Life of Pablo, with plenty of questions to walk through. Is Kanye torn between worldly and holy living, or is he burying his old life in Christ? Is there anything edifying about processing Kanye’s misogyny? And why is Saint Kim Kardashian, a ridiculous thought?

In the first part of our deep dive on Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, we stand back in awe of the beauty of “Ultralight Beam” and argue that it illuminates the rest of West’s album in a gospel-centric light.
