Suffer the Little Children - Episode 81 - Steven Meek II

Episode 81 - Steven Meek II

Suffer the Little Children

play

10/06/21 • 38 min

When two-year-old Steven Meek II was taken to a Virginia hospital, unresponsive, and died two days later, investigators focused on his mother’s boyfriend, McKenzie Hellman, whose story about how Steven incurred his injuries didn’t add up. No one could have anticipated just how horrific McKenzie’s actions truly were or how fundamentally baby Steven had been betrayed by his own mother, Kayla Thomas. Only when the two were charged with multiple crimes involving sexual abuse and child pornography did the full picture of the couple’s depravity begin to develop.
This is the story of a sweet, well-behaved little boy who adored Mickey Mouse and loved learning new things. It’s also the story of a mother who allowed the twisted desires of her morally bankrupt boyfriend to eclipse the responsibilities of motherhood to a degree most of us will never comprehend.
This is the stomach-turning story of Steven Meek II.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 142: Jack and Jennifer Edwards (Part 1)
play

04/29/23 • 71 min

On July 5, 2018, 13-year-old Jennifer Edwards got off the bus and walked eight minutes to get to her home in West Pennant Hills, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Jenny had no idea that her father, 67-year-old John Edwards, was following her in a car he rented so she wouldn’t recognize him. When Jenny arrived at home, John pulled into the driveway and chased her inside the house with a handgun. Jenny fled to her brother’s bedroom, where she and 15-year-old Jack huddled under his computer desk, terrified, as their own father stormed in and fired multiple shots directly into his helpless children’s bodies.
This is the story of two kids whose mother did everything she could to protect them from the man she left after years of psychological and physical abuse. It’s also the story of a family who was catastrophically failed by multiple systems that were in place to prevent horrific events like Jack and Jenny’s murders from occurring, and of a man who, despite leaving decades of red flags in his wake, still managed to secure the permits and licenses he needed to buy multiple guns.
This is part one of the infuriating story of Jack and Jennifer Edwards.

Suffer the Little Children - Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 2: The Trial
play

10/01/22 • 78 min

Last week, I told you the story of Michael and Kevin Kendzia, two baby boys adopted nine months apart by Susan and Tom Kendzia. Michael and Kevin also died nine months apart, each just two months after his adoption, under suspicious circumstances. The death of a second adopted baby in the Kendzia home led to an investigation into both deaths.
In this episode, I’ll go into the aftermath of Michael and Kevin’s deaths; the criminal charges that resulted; the weird relationship between Susan and her defense attorney, Ken Eusner; Susan’s murder trial; and the shocking outcome that allowed Susan to continue her pattern of alleged child abuse, deception, and pure evil for decades to follow.
This is Part 2: The Trial.

On April 5, 2017, a concerned resident of an apartment building in Braham, Minnesota called 911 after hearing screaming from the apartment below. When police responded, they found 2-month-old Eli Arispe Hentges dead in his playpen. Eli’s mother, 24-year-old Shy Ann Hentges, was interviewed by investigators, but her story changed when Eli’s autopsy revealed his tiny skull had been fractured.
This is the story of a baby born into less-than-optimal circumstances. It’s also the story of a young mother whose temper, exacerbated by her abuse of drugs and alcohol, led to the violent death of her own infant son.
This is the tragic story of Eli Arispe Hentges.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 51: Poppie Van der Merwe (Part 2)
play

02/24/21 • 54 min

In episode 50, I began telling you the story of a three-year-old girl named Poppie Van der Merwe, whose utterly preventable death shocked the nation of South Africa. After multiple reports that Poppie and her five-year-old brother were being abused, social services became involved, but the family moved to avoid the investigation. Three weeks later, Poppie was dead, and in this episode, I’ll go over the events that followed the arrests of both her stepfather and her mother.
This is the story of the murder of a blonde, blue-eyed little doll whose smile stole the hearts of an entire country. It’s also a sadly familiar story of the failure of an agency tasked with protecting children despite countless warning signs and multiple reports from those close to the family.
This is part 2 of the heartbreaking story of Poppie Van der Merwe.

In this episode, I cover my first ever South African case, that of three-year-old Poppie Van der Merwe. Poppie and her five-year-old brother were frequently seen by teachers, doctors, neighbors, and others with bruises and other injuries. When social services became involved, her mother and stepfather moved the family overnight to avoid the investigation, and the physical abuse escalated exponentially. Three weeks later, Poppie was rushed to the hospital, unresponsive, and declared dead on arrival.
This is the story of the murder of a tiny, blonde-haired, blue-eyed doll whose smile stole the hearts of an entire country. It’s also a sadly familiar story of the failure of an agency tasked with protecting children despite countless warning signs and multiple reports from those close to the family.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 123: AJ Freund (Mega Episode)

Episode 123: AJ Freund (Mega Episode)

Suffer the Little Children

play

08/17/22 • 161 min

On April 18, 2019, JoAnn Cunningham and Drew Freund called 911 to report their 5-year-old son, AJ, missing from the family’s home in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Days later, police discovered AJ’s battered body in a shallow grave, and both JoAnn and Drew were charged with the murder of their little boy.
I’ve told AJ’s story in parts over the course of two regular episodes, a few update episodes, and multiple posts on Suffer the Little Children Blog. AJ was the first child I ever featured on both the blog and the podcast, and he holds a special place in my heart. Because I covered his story over two years ago and in such a fragmented way, in this episode, I’m pulling it all together into one “mega episode” comprising all of my previous coverage about AJ as well as any updates I’ve found that I haven’t yet covered. Some of it is newly recorded, but most of it is compiled from past episodes, making it easier to get the full picture of AJ’s story all in one place.
This is the tragic story of AJ Freund.

Episode 38: Zahra Baker (Part 1)

Suffer the Little Children

play

11/17/20 • 60 min

By the time she was eight years old, Zahra Baker beat cancer not once but twice, losing a leg and most of her hearing in the process. Because her father had been single for most of Zahra’s life, she was thrilled when he finally married, but her excitement was short-lived. Almost immediately after Zahra and her dad moved from their native Australia to her stepmother’s home state of North Carolina, neighbors and school officials began seeing signs that Zahra was being abused by her stepmother, Elisa Baker.
When Zahra was reported missing on October 9, 2010, it didn’t take long for Elisa’s story of a kidnapping to unravel and her sordid, stranger-than-fiction past to surface. Still, all of us watching breathlessly from around the world held onto the hope that Zahra might be found alive... that was, until law enforcement started finding body parts scattered around western North Carolina.
This is the unbelievable story of Zahra Baker.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 91 - Shellay "Ebony" Ward (Part 1)
play

12/01/21 • 44 min

On November 3, 2007, first responders to a home in Hawks Nest, New South Wales, Australia were shocked and horrified by what they found. On a mattress in a feces-covered bedroom with a boarded-over window lay the twisted, emaciated form of 7-year-old Shellay Ward, who had been deprived of food, water, sunlight, medical attention, and basic human decency for months, if not years. Shellay’s parents, Blakeley and Sharyn Ward, were charged with her murder.
This is the story of the catastrophic failure of multiple government agencies created to protect Australia’s most vulnerable children. It’s also the story of the long, torturous death of an autistic seven-year-old girl who spent her final months imprisoned in her dark, filthy bedroom and who is largely known across Australia as Ebony, the girl who suffered the country’s worst child neglect death.
This is part one of the tragic story of Shellay “Ebony” Ward.
