On April 18, 2019, JoAnn Cunningham and Drew Freund called 911 to report their 5-year-old son, AJ, missing from the family’s home in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Days later, police discovered AJ’s battered body in a shallow grave, and both JoAnn and Drew were charged with the murder of their little boy.
I’ve told AJ’s story in parts over the course of two regular episodes, a few update episodes, and multiple posts on Suffer the Little Children Blog. AJ was the first child I ever featured on both the blog and the podcast, and he holds a special place in my heart. Because I covered his story over two years ago and in such a fragmented way, in this episode, I’m pulling it all together into one “mega episode” comprising all of my previous coverage about AJ as well as any updates I’ve found that I haven’t yet covered. Some of it is newly recorded, but most of it is compiled from past episodes, making it easier to get the full picture of AJ’s story all in one place.
This is the tragic story of AJ Freund.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 181: Vayda Vasquez

Episode 181: Vayda Vasquez

Suffer the Little Children

play

09/19/24 • 74 min

When Vayda Vasquez was a month away from turning two, her custodial maternal grandma trusted her overnight with a long-time family friend, Kellie Barthel. The following morning, after several 911 calls from Kellie’s residence in Stanton, Michigan, police responded and found little Vayda unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
This is the story of a sweet, happy little girl who loved dancing, “Baby Shark,” and listening to her mommy sing. It’s also the story of a woman who valued her meth and alcohol cravings over the life of a joyful, much-loved toddler.
Also in this episode, you’ll hear from Vayda’s mom, Danielle Maybee, who has turned her life around in the four years since Vayda’s death. Dani and I had a candid, honest conversation about Vayda’s life, her death, and the memories she left behind.
This is the heartbreaking story of Vayda Vasquez.

In Episode 4, I told you about Raylee Browning: a little girl who died on December 26, 2018. Although she was covered with injuries from head to toe, her cause of death was a septic infection from untreated pneumonia. The three adults in the home—Raylee’s father, his girlfriend, and her sister—were charged in her death.
That episode barely scratched the surface. Now, I’m retelling Raylee’s full story with the help of her mom, Janice Wriston, who fought for Raylee’s entire eight years to protect her daughter from the girl’s own father, Marty Browning Jr. The way the press told the story, Marty was a negligent father who merely failed to protect his daughter. The truth about Marty is far darker than that.
This is the story of a sweet, loving little girl whose mom called her Sunshine. It’s also a story about the horrific abuse Marty inflicted on first Janice and then Raylee, and how he managed to become entwined with a pair of sisters just as narcissistic and abusive as himself, ultimately leading to his only child’s painful and unnecessary death.
This is part one of the harrowing story of Raylee Browning.

In Episode 102, I told you the story of two-year-old Fallon Fridley, a precious little girl in Georgia whose babysitter, a close family friend, tortured and killed her in December 2020. The attack was caught on the babysitter’s in-home video surveillance system, and police found incriminating search terms on Kirstie Flood’s phone, such as “What does it mean to have a sudden urge to beat a child that’s not yours?”
Today, I have several updates for you in Fallon’s case, including plea deals, sentencing, and more. You’ll also hear my recent conversation with Fallon’s mom, Kristin Fridley, who has been to hell and back over the past four years but manages to remain grateful for the blessings in her life.

Suffer the Little Children - Groomed to Die: The Kendzia Children | Part 2: The Trial
play

10/01/22 • 78 min

Last week, I told you the story of Michael and Kevin Kendzia, two baby boys adopted nine months apart by Susan and Tom Kendzia. Michael and Kevin also died nine months apart, each just two months after his adoption, under suspicious circumstances. The death of a second adopted baby in the Kendzia home led to an investigation into both deaths.
In this episode, I’ll go into the aftermath of Michael and Kevin’s deaths; the criminal charges that resulted; the weird relationship between Susan and her defense attorney, Ken Eusner; Susan’s murder trial; and the shocking outcome that allowed Susan to continue her pattern of alleged child abuse, deception, and pure evil for decades to follow.
This is Part 2: The Trial.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 180: The West Memphis Three (An Interview with Dan Stidham)
play

08/25/24 • 103 min

On the evening of May 5, 1993, three eight-year-old boys—Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers—went missing in West Memphis, Arkansas. The next day, in a nearby wooded area, the boys were found brutally murdered, bound, and submerged in a drainage ditch. The horrific nature of the crime shocked the community, and police quickly arrested three local teenagers—Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley—based on a coerced false confession, no solid evidence, and Satanic panic.
This is the story of three innocent children whose lives were stolen in an unspeakable act of violence. It’s also the story of three wrongfully convicted teenagers who spent 18 years in prison, one of them on death row, for a crime they didn’t commit—the victims of a flawed justice system and a community in the grip of fear.
In today’s episode, I’m honored to discuss a case that has gripped me for many years with the one man who has been involved since the beginning: Jessie Misskelley’s original defense attorney, case advocate, and author of the recent book, A Harvest of Innocence: Judge Dan Stidham.
This is our discussion about his book and the tragic case of the West Memphis Three.

Suffer the Little Children - Episode 50: Poppie Van der Merwe (Part 1)
play

02/17/21 • 48 min

In this episode, I cover my first ever South African case, that of three-year-old Poppie Van der Merwe. Poppie and her five-year-old brother were frequently seen by teachers, doctors, neighbors, and others with bruises and other injuries. When social services became involved, her mother and stepfather moved the family overnight to avoid the investigation, and the physical abuse escalated exponentially. Three weeks later, Poppie was rushed to the hospital, unresponsive, and declared dead on arrival.
This is the story of the murder of a tiny, blonde-haired, blue-eyed doll whose smile stole the hearts of an entire country. It’s also a sadly familiar story of the failure of an agency tasked with protecting children despite countless warning signs and multiple reports from those close to the family.
This is part 1 of the heartbreaking story of Poppie Van der Merwe.

Suffer the Little Children

Note: I'm honored to release this episode on what would be Arianna's sixth birthday.
On January 8, 2021, 27-year-old Destani Neel called 911, reporting that her boyfriend’s daughter was having trouble breathing. Although two-year-old Arianna Starkey was rushed to the hospital, she never regained consciousness, and she took her last breath two days later. Destani—a mother herself—had a story prepared for investigators, but her details kept changing, and it was immediately apparent that Arianna’s death was not an accident.
This is the story of a little girl who loved her big brother, her pink boots, and having tea parties with her Nana. It’s also the story of a mother who took out all of her frustrations on her boyfriend’s innocent toddler—and a man whose intervention could have saved his daughter’s life.
This is part 1 of the harrowing story of Arianna Starkey.
