play

03/23/22 • 26 min

This week, GamerDude revisits the topic of baseball. Back in Season 1, he talked about his love for the Yankees, and how and why he started rooting for them as a kid. In light of the end of the most recent lockout by the owners, GamerDude wanted to revisit the topic of baseball and talk about how he used to love it, but how and why he lost interest in the game. He talks about listening to baseball games on AM radio as a kid, when he was supposed to be sleeping. He talks about how radio signals at night from Boston, Cincinnatti and Chicago carried to his bedroom in New Jersey and alllowed him to listen to a number of games in bed. He talks about how the radio announcers brought the games to life, and how he learned the rules of the game from listening to, and occasionally watching, baseball. He also talks about wanting to play baseball as a kid but never really having the chance. He talks about throwing tennis balls at the house, and at a Pitch-Back in his back yard, to practice his fielding and throwing. And he talks about going to batting cages and trying to hit 70 mph pitches. He also talks about how he used to love baseball until the players' strike of 1994. He talks about rule changes, and playoff changes, and schedule changes. He also discusses the huge contracts and the extended length of games because of advertising. And, as any baseball fan would, he shares his rant about the designated hitter.

GamerDude is talking about Thanksgiving again this week, with another reminder of how important it is to be thankful, especially in these days of tough times and a world seemingly suffering from a global case of COVID-related PTSD.

GamerDude revisits the topic of "family politics" and how they influenced his Thanksgivings as a child. He talks about alternating Thanksgivings between his grandmother's houses, and how he didn't like visiting his dad's mom for the holiday because he was relegated to the "kid's table."

GamerDude also revisits the Thanksgiving at his mom's mom's house, when his cousins stopped by for a "snack" that left GamerDad with no turkey for his leftover turkey sandwiches. GamerDude also remembers how his dad seemed to wrestle with the turkey each year he tried to carve it, which always made GamerDude think that carving the turkey was difficult - until he grew up, and discovered it wasn't that hard at all.

GamerDude also shares his favorite non-denominational prayer, giving thanks for the simple basics of life: heat, faces, and eating.

Storytime with GamerDude - Some of The Best Of Christmas Stories
play

12/14/22 • 21 min

He talks about the Sears Wishbook and Christmas concerts (from Season 1). He talks about some of the origins of the Christmas holiday, and how Christmas was actually banned in New England - by Christians! - in the 1600s (from Season 2). He also replays the story of the chaotic good gift he and his siblings bought for their Uncle John one year. It's one of those stories that family gatherings were made for.

Storytime with GamerDude - Smells, Sounds And Sensations We Remember
play

03/01/23 • 22 min

This week, GamerDude talks about sensory memories: those memories that are triggered by a certain scent, or sound, or the way something feels. He talks about how some sensory memories have disappeared because the source of the memory no longer exists, like his grandfather's shed. He also talks about how technology has caused some memories to disappear, like the white static on a VHS cassette, or the tactile feel of typing on an actual typewriter. He also talks about exploring the change slots on a bank of payphones, and that little thrill you'd get when you actually found a coin or two.

GamerDude talks about where the Elf on the Shelf came from and why he's not a huge fan. He also talks about the green pickle ornament, which started in the late 1880s and actually has an origin story very similar to the Elf. He also talks about the Feast of the Seven Fishes and where that came from.

Storytime with GamerDude - Some Unwritten Rules for Living in the World Today
play

01/04/23 • 21 min

GamerDude talks about some of the unwritten rules that he believes apply (or at least should apply) in the world today. These go beyond the manners he talked about in Season 1 (things like saying "please," and "thank you.") These are more common sense rules of behavior that can apply in almost any setting.

The unwritten rules run the gamut from the courteous: Don't listen to your music, or make a call without a headset or earbuds, to the profound: Life is not fair, and you can do all the right things and still not win. And the rules apply to family settings, and friend settings, and work settings. Give a listen, see what you think, and feel free to send your own suggestions along too!

12/29/21 • 20 min

As 2021 and Season 4 of the podcast draw to a close, GamerDude talks about that week between Christmas and New Years, when no one really wants to be working, and where nothing ever really seems to get done. He also talks about the post-Christmas shopping he did with his dad after Christmas, and remembers game night on New Year's Eve with his mom. GamerDude also talks about some of the superstitions involving food to eat as the New Year begins. He talks about green peas, lentil and pork as the "good luck" meals, and why crab, lobster, chicken and turkey are bad luck. He also talks about the 12 Lucky Grapes of the new year. Finally, GamerDude shares some observations about the New Year from the early 1800s, from a Scottish traveler's observations about what New Year's Day in New York was like back in 1830, to some timeless words of wisdom to carry into the New Year.
