Stoic Solutions Podcast - Episode 59: Responsibilities To Society And Other Beings
play

06/04/18 • 13 min

You're listening to the Stoic Solutions Podcast - practical wisdom for everyday life. I'm Justin Vacula and this is episode 59 – Responsibilities to Society and Other Beings – a bonus episode this week brought to you by a generous donation from a Patreon supporter amidst upcoming episodes with special guest interviews. Miss Anonymous asks, “What responsibilities, if any, do we have to other people and our society in general? What about altruism and self-sacrifice?” Thanks for your support Miss Anonymous. Summary: We can see ourselves as beings part of a greater whole concerned with having a positive impact on society being mindful of the consequences of our actions. We're to take action in society for both the benefit our ourselves and others rather than being withdrawn from the world or learning for learning's sake – we're to apply our knowledge and skills. There are many paths to befitting others – we can question certain paths and make prudent decisions. Recognize that others, especially children, will model our behavior, so be a good role model while in society. Consider not only humans, but also animal welfare and in doing so have better health and participate in less harm to animals and the environment. Be careful with whom you associate. Select good friends and benefit from your interactions with others. Stoic Solutions Podcast

07/26/17 • 10 min

I talk about complaining. Rather than merely complaining, we should take action to change that which we can and work toward a better quality of life including realistic goals. For that which we cannot change, we can work on acceptance, be more grateful for good parts of life, not exaggerate our difficulties, and not create problems for ourselves. My Stoic Philosophy series explores the tradition of Stoicism with goals to inform, empower, and help others benefit from practical wisdom of Ancient Greek, Roman, and modern thinkers including Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca. For the Stoics, a main focus is pursuing virtue to attain a well-examined life through practical applications of Philosophy – acting with good character, using reason to form accurate careful judgments about the world, and achieving contentment. Stoic writers focus on many perennial human concerns and urge people to take action applying what they learn to everyday life. Self-improvement is central to Stoic thought – strengthening and improving one's mindset. Support through Patreon and Paypal Donate: http://justinvacula.com/donate/ Like, share, subscribe! I explore passages in Seneca's 'Letters from a Stoic' relating to the topic of suicide which can encourage people to find the will to live working to improve by taking action; enduring suffering; having a sense of gratitude; having hope for the future; reflecting on past accomplishments; accepting elements of chance and inevitability in life; being mindful of thoughts and emotions to have insight motivated toward change; preparing for hardships; being strong and brave; considering the impact suicide can have on others; and finding meaning in life. Visit my website at StoicSolutionsPodcast.com. For today’s episode, I recorded with author Donald Robertson about his new book ‘Marcus Aurelius: The Stoic Emperor.’ The book brings Marcus Aurelius to life for a new generation by exploring the emperor’s fascinating psychological journey. Donald Robertson is a writer, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapist, and trainer. He is one of the founding members of the Modern Stoicism nonprofit and the founder and president of the Plato’s Academy Centre nonprofit in Athens, Greece. Robertson is an expert on the relationship between modern evidence-based psychotherapy and classical Greek and Roman philosophy. He specializes in teaching evidence-based psychological skills.
