Volunteers & Ocean County Work to Help Toms River, NJ's Animals After Temporary Closure of Shelter
Still Time for Joy
03/19/25 • 10 min
In June 2024, Toms River Township's 10-year-old animal shelter was abruptly shut down, leaving animal advocates scrambling for solutions. Now, a shared services agreement is in place, which calls for Ocean County to run Toms River's shelter after renovations are completed.
Some residents have rallied and thousands signed a petition, angry that the relatively new shelter was shuttered. They also are unhappy that animal control services have been privatized, after all four township ACOs were let go.
Toms River's situation is not unique; a hodgepodge of municipal and county agencies, and volunteer rescue groups struggle to find homes for unwanted pets all over the country, often at odds over how best to do so.
There's general agreement about the need to spay and neuter companion animals, and that adopting from shelters and rescue groups saves lives.
While the Toms River facility is closed, residents looking for lost pets are advised to contact the Ocean County Animal Shelter in Jackson Township.

Saving Lives of All Adoptable Shelter Animals is 2025 Goal of Best Friends Animal Society
Still Time for Joy
03/11/25 • 25 min
Best Friends Animal Society is holding "Bring No-Kill Home Summits" around the country as it strives to reach an ambitious goal: end the killing of adoptable shelter animals in 2025.
For decades, millions of healthy, adoptable animals were euthanized in shelters every year when the facilities ran out of space. Best Friends made a commitment in 2016 (when their statistics showed about two million deaths) to work towards ending that practice by 2025. At the summits, members of the animal welfare community learn innovative techniques to help them save more lives.
Marc Peralta, chief program officer at Best Friends, talks about the heavy toll killing shelter animals takes on the people who joined the field looking to help. He says it is inspiring and fulfilling to work in a lifesaving movement as it moves closer to its goal.
Best Friends started as a sanctuary for unwanted animals in Utah in 1984.
For more than 15 years, "Still Time for Joy" host Sandra Levine produced popular television programs about animal welfare and adoption—including “Homeless Tails”— for NJN, formerly New Jersey's PBS station.

Music & Dementia Caregiving - Book by Music Therapist Helps You Bring a Little Joy to the Journey
Still Time for Joy
03/04/25 • 22 min
For people living with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, memories of music often remain, even after so many others are gone. With the help of a book, "Music, Memory, and Meaning", co-authored by music therapist Tara Jenkins, caregivers can learn how to use music to bring some joy to their loved ones, and in some cases, even reduce difficult behaviors.
Jenkins, founder of Harmony in Dementia, has been a board-certified music therapist since 2008. She wrote the book to give caregivers and their loved ones another way to connect, even when the person living with dementia is no longer able to speak.
The book explains why music is such a powerful tool, provides playlists of popular songs, as well as information and questions that serve as a starting point for engaged discussions.

Tips for Dealing with Grief for Dementia Caregivers
Still Time for Joy
02/18/25 • 12 min
Grief is an inevitable part of the caregiver journey, especially in dementia caregiving. Grief may not be acknowledged as people living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia are still present, even as caregivers watch with despair as they slip away, often over the course of many years.
Caregivers also grieve the changes to their own lives, as dementia caregiving can quickly become all-consuming, and exact a heavy financial toll, significantly altering the way caregivers expected to live their lives.
Deb Hallisey, certified dementia practitioner and caregiver advocate, explains several experiences of grief that may be a part of the caregiving journey: ambiguous loss, anticipatory grief, and grief relief. She also outlines strategies caregivers can use to help alleviate sadness, including accurately naming feelings, seeking support—online or in-person—therapy, journaling, and more.

Ocean Free Diving Brings Calm & Confidence to NJ Respiratory Therapist Training for Competition
Still Time for Joy
02/12/25 • 21 min
When you think about techniques to reduce stress, holding your breath underwater may not immediately come to mind. But with proper training, free diving can provide both physical and mental health benefits, similar to meditation practices and yoga.
Brandon Cadalzo, who grew up snorkeling and scuba diving at the New Jersey Shore, found free diving helped him deal with the trauma of working as a respiratory therapist during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Today, Cadalzo is training for an upcoming free diving competition in Dominica, and he also is studying to become an instructor, to teach others about the therapeutic benefits of spending time underwater.

Caregivers often are so busy scheduling appointments with doctors for their loved ones, and handling countless other caregiving tasks, that they wind up neglecting their own physical and emotional needs. This is not sustainable, and it leads to frustration, anger, and overwhelm. Caregivers need to shift their mindset and realize that their own needs are just as important as the needs of their loved one.
Deb Hallisey is a certified dementia practitioner at Advocate for Mom and Dad, who explains how to develop a Care Plan for the Caregiver, so caregivers can get to their own appointments, and schedule time away for rest and relaxation.

Spending time walking outdoors in the woods has so many benefits, for both our physical health and mental well-being. But many women are not comfortable hiking alone, so they miss out on this simple and affordable opportunity for both better health and more joy.
Alexis Liastro formed the Facebook group “Ladies Only! NJ Hiking Group” in late 2020, to help connect women who love hiking. To date, there are nearly 25,000 members in the group, encouraging and empowering one another to get out in the woods more often.
Members create an event on the page, listing the date, location, and additional details of a planned hike, and other women join the outing. A huge added bonus: countless new friendships have formed, that exist both within and outside the woods.
There are similar online groups that help hikers find hiking buddies around the country and around the world.
Special thanks to Alexis Liastro and Sonya Noyes for contributing photographs for this production.

Flower Farm Brings New Purpose to Owner & Joy to Customers—Preserving Beauty & Nature in NJ
Still Time for Joy
03/26/25 • 13 min
The arrival of spring means the greenhouses at Lanza's Flower Farm in Wall Township, New Jersey, are bursting with young plants—pansies, petunias, begonias, and more. Chris Difeo spent much of his life working in the family car dealership business before buying a nursery in 2020 and converting it into a flower farm.
Difeo feels great satisfaction from raising flowers and beekeeping, and his customers find great joy in visiting the farm, located in the middle of the most densely populated state in the nation. New Jersey, known as the Garden State, has lost much of its farmland over the years to development.
