jeremy Hinks

Welcome to Sticky Jazz, the music show of a Million different opinions on music. I am Jeremy Hinks, a "Gonzo" music journalist in Salt Lake City Utah, I am also the music editor at large for the LGBTQ publication instinct magazine, (nice of them to let a straight guy write for them isn't it?) I will give you the music you might have heard, might not have heard, but definitely should have heard. I'll give you interviews with some big names, some new people, and someone you heard long ago, and they still are kicking. No music is taboo on my show, I'll cover it all. Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Nona Invie
play

02/27/25 • 65 min

In a world of mixing entire musical genres, I think we have a winner with Nona Invie, I would describe her music as Dream Pop meets folk electronica.

Nona Invie is releasing today "An EXCLUSIVE YOU HEARD IT HEAR FIRST" kind of thing a new album called "Self Sooting" and that is very much what it is. Imagine Peter Murphy's "Love Hysteria" mixed so beautifully into a musical marriage with Stella Rose Gahan's current work, like that, only a bit dreamier.

She will only have a few simple lines, and take several minutes of music in between each one to tell the story.

We talked about the background of the songs, the juxtaposition in the videos, to her sexuality of being a queer musician and not liking labels, just enjoying being under the "Queer blanket".

She has written a lot about personal loss, and people in her life that could not get out of a bad rutt, and what it cost everyone. I was able to relate to her stories, and I am afraid so many of us will.

Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Miss Velvet
play

03/17/25 • 66 min

Sometime you hear someone that hooks ya, then spins you around like when your canoe capsizes and you end up face down in some rapids tossed around completely out of control. That is musically and emotionally what I experienced first time through with "Miss Velvet".

Miss Velvet is one of those "andro" artists, like Grace Jones, Prince, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Pink. She has this incredible divine goddess spirit to her, and also pulling through some powerful masculinity, like you would expect a goddess to do .

She is ready to release a new EP on March 21at "TRIPTYCH", which has several powerful songs and videos to it.

We talked about her work, and how powerful it was, what the inspiration was that brought her to be who she is, the power of connecting with the earth walking barefoot at the Dead Sea, and meeting her spirit animal. Yeah, all that and more.

Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Janet Devlin (#2)
play

04/01/25 • 67 min

Having kicked off her career in Britains' Got Talent, Janet Devlin is still delivering great music. She just released a new album "Emotional Rodeo" filling the niche of Country Music in Ireland, (Yeah I didn't even know there was one) and spreading the love thick across all these new song.

We talk about the back story for the songs, one of which was written in the aftermath an emotional meltdown text, others, just happened in her journey. This interview has it all, songs about alcoholism, mental healt, human sexuality, and of course we had to talk about Dolly Parton too.

This interview has something for everyone, and this album is just a total winner.

Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Lenny Zenith
play

11/26/24 • 61 min

Someone who has done it all, Lenny Zenith understood he was transgender at a young age, and was able to transition in the 70s. Since then Lenny has made some great music into the great Americana songbook, and performed with U2, Iggy Pop, The Replacements, and X. Nuff said there.

We talked about his music, transitioning, fears that have resurfaced, and his love for people. We also talked about getting old, and how that plays into his music too, especially on his new album "He/Hymn".

This is one that you would get lost in the rabbit hole listening to the songs over the years, and even get a kick out of the cabaret performances on youtube.

Lenny is an inspiration, and I hope he can reach more young people, he fought a hell of a fight, and so many can stand on his shoulders now.

Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Magic Wands
play

10/31/24 • 75 min

IF you like "The Cure" from 1985 on, or "The Mission" from Children, then the ethereal dream goth dance band "Magic Wands" have something special for you.

I would describe them as "If The Chameleons, and The Cocteau Twins made music together".

I got to speak with Dexy, and Chris, about their lyrics, songwriting, ad hoc videos, and the chaos in recording their music. Magic Wands are a fun rabbit hole to go down.

From my discovery of his music on the Trashcan Sinatras album "Cake" all the way through now, I have enjoyed the guitar and voice of (Sir?) John Douglas.

He released a self titled album last year where he did some reworking of old Sinatras hits, and some of his own material. It was full of rich guitar work, and focused in on vocals, and the lyrics.

We talked about the meaning behind some of his songs, and his storytelling process. We exchanged jokes about the Scottish method of storytelling in music, and why use one word when you can poetically use 27. His new work sounds nothing like the Trashcan Sinatras, but is more an introspective on looking back, understanding what happened in situations, and hoping to be wiser about things in the future.

Andrew Choi of St Lenox has given us a new great oups, "Ten Modern American Work Songs". From his previous interview on his album "Superkamiocandi" which was a total winner. This new album takes on different themes, of work, cooking, and climbing out of poverty to get through law school.

He has so much to talk about, and make everything interesting. Enjoy

So many "What if's" in music, Noel Burke was already successful in his band St Vitus Dance when he was asked to be the vocalist for Echo & The Bunnymen in 1989. Looking back, the album has stood the test of time, and now can be considered a great piece of musical literature. I spoke to Noel about the new St Vitus Dance music, and his time in The Bunnymen, plenty of Liverpool, and Belfast culture as well. He tells some great stories that not many have heard, if only because there is not a lot written about him. He was very approachable, and happy to answer any questions, for a longtime fan of the bordering on obscure, this was a great conversation. St Vitus Dance is going to be releasing new singles until they are ready to make them all into an album, AND they will be performing the Reverberation album in its entirety on October 19th in Liverpool [https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/st-vitus-dance-featuring-noel-burke-ex-echo-and-the-bunnymen-tickets-935503424927] #music [https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/music?__eep__=6&__cft__[0]=AZVc7-at0FdX8wG3_EWwhDYEFvoNWqmDNzu-cGgofT_obnINzMmA20z_QKru8LzmRk7Dk6MSShqS7xtdDdBLLPSHrMbctns0fUeT61yO7XbiB5D3bL-Ji7K2hyfJShUfFxWypSo_XxiQJ0vr0K5x248JWktmKEutHsH8Z4GDTx6BdgcGk7JS6Q8wOE5vua_svssDAG2i41KNGq9mt7n3Qwx4jc9sdKKPM4AuKSnJSaU1LQ] #postpunk [https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/postpunk?__eep__=6&__cft__[0]=AZVc7-at0FdX8wG3_EWwhDYEFvoNWqmDNzu-cGgofT_obnINzMmA20z_QKru8LzmRk7Dk6MSShqS7xtdDdBLLPSHrMbctns0fUeT61yO7XbiB5D3bL-Ji7K2hyfJShUfFxWypSo_XxiQJ0vr0K5x248JWktmKEutHsH8Z4GDTx6BdgcGk7JS6Q8wOE5vua_svssDAG2i41KNGq9mt7n3Qwx4jc9sdKKPM4AuKSnJSaU1LQ] #1980s [https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/1980s?__eep__=6&__cft__[0]=AZVc7-at0FdX8wG3_EWwhDYEFvoNWqmDNzu-cGgofT_obnINzMmA20z_QKru8LzmRk7Dk6MSShqS7xtdDdBLLPSHrMbctns0fUeT61yO7XbiB5D3bL-Ji7K2hyfJShUfFxWypSo_XxiQJ0vr0K5x248JWktmKEutHsH8Z4GDTx6BdgcGk7JS6Q8wOE5vua_svssDAG2i41KNGq9mt7n3Qwx4jc9sdKKPM4AuKSnJSaU1LQ] #EchoAndTheBunnymen [https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/echoandthebunnymen?__eep__=6&__cft__[0]=AZVc7-at0FdX8wG3_EWwhDYEFvoNWqmDNzu-cGgofT_obnINzMmA20z_QKru8LzmRk7Dk6MSShqS7xtdDdBLLPSHrMbctns0fUeT61yO7XbiB5D3bL-Ji7K2hyfJShUfFxWypSo_XxiQJ0vr0K5x248JWktmKEutHsH8Z4GDTx6BdgcGk7JS6Q8wOE5vua_svssDAG2i41KNGq9mt7n3Qwx4jc9sdKKPM4AuKSnJSaU1LQ] #stvitusdance #scouserrock Bandcamp [https://stvitusdance.bandcamp.com/] Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/track/37tLfjifbOfYB0iPGuMcwb] With the Bunnymen [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2MJeX3Wq1E]

Sticky Jazz - Sticky Jazz Interview Montjuïc

02/12/24 • 67 min

Named after a hill in Spain, two incredibly talented collaborating musicians from Glasgow decided to give us a perfect clash of both of their previous bands. James Hackett from the Scottish band "The Orchids" and long time friend and producer Ian Carmichael from the Scottish Electronica band "One Dove" have released new music that seems to be the best of both worlds. The just released single "Your Shame" is as Ian describes it "The song is about living a life free of other people's expectations, and not allowing yourself to be shamed by others' standards or beliefs." Having grown up queer and hiding it because he didn't know what else to do, these songs touch on those subjects very well. I got to talk to them about their previous work, and the new single released today, which even during the conversation Ian found James' explanation of the lyrics fascinating because he didn't know what the songs were about either. Take a dive into this one, I loved the music, and the chat. linktree [https://linktr.ee/montjuic_] #montijuic #electronica #theorchids #glasgomusicians #lgbtqartists #onedove #dotallison

A "Power Punk" band that has been on the scene since 1991, they have put together a new album called "Lovely Stuff", it is full of great old school punk vibes, and right after that, a great single based on "Allegiance" to the ideals of REAL America.

We covered their catalog, these great stories behind the songs, some history of dating, and a few ideas of love songs in the punk world.

Josh Caterer tells all after 30+ years making great music, playing a lot of shows, and how their shows allow them to connect to the punters on an inspirational level.

We also talked about Judy Garland of all things.
