Nairobi Nouveau
Sticks & Stones Cast.
08/06/20 • 116 min
When you think of Nairobi now, banish the thoughts of vast savannas and troops of wild life dashing through your front and back yard (well they still do in some place) The new Nairobi is a metropolis that is cutting it's own path. Halfway between the old maasai men herding their cattle on the side of tarmac highways and the same herders laughing at Tik Tok videos streamed to their smart phones at break-neck internet speeds.
This midway point has brought with it it's own subculture of music, fashion, communication, lingo, entertainment and pioneers. In this installment of the podcast, we were fortunate enough to catch one of the icons that symbolize and embody Nairobi's new subculture.
Patricia Kihoro (Misskihoro on the Instagrams) is the picture one would paint if they were asked to paint the person that is Nairobi. She is singer, writer, actress, model, fashion icon, radio presenter, curator of events & shows, host of shows & events, a mentor, thespian, travel blogger ( although she prefers traveller) social media content creator & trend influencer ( she has more followers than John the Baptist), improv comedienne and speaker of truth to power.
From Radio to TV to film and onto the streets, Patricia takes us through her experiences in various roles and capacities she's had myriads of industries. We also get to speak about how Social media can be harnessed to empower and promote more representation, the role of creative in agitating for change in governance & equality. The challenges of travel within and without the continent, how to support & sustain creative businesses, navigating various spaces as a woman and finally, just who wears sandals, socks, a track suit, a heavy jacket and a rocks a bicycle while their dad is dressed in a 3 piece suit!

Multidisciplinary Warrior
Sticks & Stones Cast.
07/10/20 • 76 min
For a long time, Jim Chuchu ( @jimchuchu on the Instagram & Twitter ) has been a staple in the creative field in Kenya. With a larger-than-life résumé, international awards and multiple pseudonyms under which he produces various works, it is easy to understand why many think that he is simply a moniker that various creatives made up to work under.... A modern day urban myth so to speak.
Soft spoken and exceedingly humble, we finally got to sit with the brains behind some of the most boisterous and thought-provoking works of the last two decades in Africa. In this installment of the podcast we peel back the curtain and try and keep pace with the Multidisciplinary Warrior and look at his odyssey through music, film, photography and activism. We also get to understand the motivation behind his work, what exactly it is The Nest Collective (@Thisisthenest) is and how HEVA Fund is addressing business concerns of creatives in East Africa. (We also find out if bread baked by a multidisciplinary warrior tastes better than your regular baker.)
Things to listen out for - New The Nest Collective album - Sweet & Sawa ( available on everywhere you stream your tunes from) the new Nest Collective Film Tapi and of course critically acclaimed Stories of Our Lives.

The Stand Up comedy scene is still relatively new in Nairobi but a few bold explorers are venturing into the unknown to speak truth to power...
In Episode 3 - Laughter in Times of Pestilence, we sit with Sharon Shazz Nderitu one of the stand up comedy pioneers; A singer, actress, model, interior designer and decorator, positivity and justice hero and most importantly stand up comic. We have a great chat with her about stand up comedy in Kenya and what it means to keep the laughter going in difficult times ( such as the plague) We get to also know what she's listening to, what she's watching and what she is reading ( Spoiler alert - an anthology of African short love stories titled Nostalgia & Other Short Stories by Emma Tinje)
