March 26, 2022 – Searching for Prophetic Voices
03/26/22 • 60 min
It’s a historic week in our nation’s capital, with Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson poised to be the first Black woman to serve as a Supreme Court justice. While many have enthusiastically embraced her nomination, some on the right continue to launch bad-faith attacks – including questioning her faith as a matter of judicial fitness. This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we will discuss those manipulating religion for political gain – and those fighting back against this movement.
Every person deserves the right to make decisions about their health in accordance with their beliefs and values – not those of their legislature. So in a place like Texas that prides itself on rugged individualism, why are legislators forcing their religious beliefs on families across the state? The Rev. Dr. Daniel Kanter, senior minister and CEO of First Unitarian Church of Dallas, will join Rev. Welton Gaddy, host of State of Belief, to discuss the faithful opposition to anti-choice laws in Texas – including physically accompanying women across state lines for necessary heath care.
Amid the chaos of a pandemic and the fracturing of our democracy, it is difficult not to long for strong, moral leadership – something that often seems in short supply. Welton will sit down with award-winning documentary filmmaker Martin Doblmeier to discuss his new series Prophetic Voices, which highlights five icons whose leadership continues to guide us today.
The season of Lent and Easter is the holiest time on the Christian calendar. Rev. Marian Edmonds-Allen, executive director of Parity, a nonprofit healing divisions at the intersection of religion and LGBTQ+ identity, works to effectively bridge divides and draw attention to the unique struggles of queer Christians. Rev. Edmonds-Allen will join Welton to discuss this work, including the Glitter Ash Wednesday movement, and more.

Rev. Welton Gaddy, host of State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio program and podcast, is feeling under the weather this week, which gives us the opportunity to let him get some rest while at the same time being the only place to hear our featured flashback guest.
Rachel Maddow is on hiatus from her top-rated nightly MSNBC television program to work on other projects, so there’s nowhere else to hear a voice that many of us dearly miss hearing right now... What follows is an extended interview Welton conducted with Rachel in 2016.

April 2, 2022 – Politicizing Everything
Perhaps no public institution impacts the everyday lives of every American to the same extent as the Supreme Court. The decisions made by our justices define what kind of nation we’ll be – whether our country will be one that upholds the rule of law, protects our civil rights and liberties, and guarantees the protections owed to all Americans under the Bill of Rights.
Everyone seems to appreciate the significance of Supreme Court appointments – but why are our elected leaders incapable of treating the confirmation process with the seriousness it requires? This week on State of Belief, Interfaith Alliance’s weekly radio show and podcast, we will discuss what Judge Jackson’s hearings revealed about public faith in the integrity of the judiciary.
It’s pretty much become a given that for U.S. senators, the judicial nomination process is more about scoring cheap political points rather than considering the long-term implications of a lifetime appointment. Following yet another round of overheated nomination hearings, what lessons should we take away? Attorney Jay Michaelson will join Interfaith Alliance president Rabbi Jack Moline, filling in this week for State of Belief host Rev. Welton Gaddy, to discuss the hearings as well as prospects for the future of the politicized court.
It’s a bittersweet week here on State of Belief. For almost 15 years, Interfaith Alliance’s director of outreach and operations Jay Keller has played a central role in our work advancing true religious freedom for all across the country. As Jay moves on this week to well-deserved retirement, he’ll sit down with Rabbi Moline to reminisce about his time at the organization and toast to the future.
