CONTENT NOTE

This series was originally going to be run as a D&D game for our household. We swapped over to a playtest of the No Kings system after getting frustrated with Wizards of the Coast. We planned this game before Spelljammer was published and the news about the depiction of Hadozee hit the day we sat down to play.

Body horror, in many ways the horrors of capitalism.

What happens when you sit down to play your first session of a new campaign and decide you want to switch systems and use an original setting? You do another session Zero of course!

In this session, we figure out the aesthetic and time period of our setting, decide how space and our ship work, and create some of the world history! Then we move on to expand on our character's backstories and explore the cultures they came from. Mel tells us about Vibe Keepers, Aly tells us about the Pottimus Homeworld, Drew explains the Usagon and Bladesworn, and James riffs on dragonlings before deciding to change how they work literally the next episode. Plenty of good stuff!

Starwhal: Odyssey - Episode Zero A: Making Characters
play

05/29/23 • 98 min

Hey heroes!

For those that don't know, Mel and I live in a duplex with Aly Grauer and Drew Mierzejewski. We wanted a household game forever! We finally found time and agreed on a premise, but it blew up in our faces a little bit because of WotC.

We liked our characters though! We decided we are going to keep playing, change systems, and make our own setting. This session zero happened before any of us read the Hadozee entry in 5e Spelljammer. In episode one we address that.

This session zero is us creating our characters for 5e and Spelljammer. Although some facts will change we decided this would still be good to release because it does establish our characters. After this, you will get the 5e session followed by a session 0.5 where we figure out how to pivot away from Spelljammer and D&D with our world and flesh out our characters.

This was originally a Patreon exclusive, so we play with a looser style. It was made partially public in our 2023 Patreon drive. Thanks to our patrons!
