The conversation covers a wide range of topics, including therapy, trauma, embodiment, and the impact of social media. It delves into the experiences of Ailey Jolie and her journey from the entertainment industry to becoming a therapist. The discussion also explores the challenges of hyper-independence and the differences in how men and women process emotions and trauma.
What happens when a seasoned entertainment professional decides to pivot towards a career in therapy? Join us on "Starve the Ego Feed the Soul" as we sit down with Ailey Jolie, who shares her transformative journey from the spotlight to the therapist’s chair. Ailey opens up about her personal battles with trauma and how these experiences have fueled her passion for helping others heal. Her unique perspective illuminates the therapeutic process, the embodiment of emotional experiences, and the challenging, yet rewarding, path of assisting clients through their own trauma.
Ever wondered how social media shapes our mental health, or how dropping out of multiple grad programs can lead to profound self-discovery? This episode with Ailey tackles these topics head-on. We dissect the impact of living under public scrutiny, struggling with eating disorders, and the vital importance of transitioning from public personas to authentic selves. Ailey and I get real about how disconnecting from social platforms can lead to both isolation and growth, especially in the context of modern dating and relationships.
Get ready for an enriching exploration of the profound differences between online self-help content and the individualized nature of therapy. Ailey introduces us to the Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy model, highlighting its significance in integrating our internal parts. We also critically examine the cultural nuances in how men and women process emotions, the pitfalls of hyper-independence, and the importance of community and self-awareness in today's world. Don't miss this compelling conversation that promises to leave you with fresh insights and a deeper understanding of mental health and personal growth.

This week's guest is Natalie Lyla Ginsberg, MSW. Natalie is the Global Impact Officer at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) https://maps.org/ where Natalie works with her inspiration around the potential role of psychedelics' in healing intergenerational trauma and conflict, and for inspiring innovative community-drive solutions.
Natalie founded the Policy & Advocacy department at MAPS, and served as its director for 5 years. She also initiated and helped developed MAPS' Health Equity Program.
MAPS Mission statement from their website is: Founded in 1986, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research and educational organization that develops medical, legal, and cultural contexts for people to benefit from the careful uses of psychedelics and marijuana.
Many of you have probably heard of MAPS through its founder Rick Doblin. Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana and his Master’s thesis on a survey of oncologists about smoked marijuana vs. the oral THC pill in nausea control for cancer patients. His undergraduate thesis at New College of Florida was a 25-year follow-up to the classic Good Friday Experiment, which evaluated the potential of psychedelic drugs to catalyze religious experiences. He also conducted a thirty-four year follow-up study to Timothy Leary’s Concord Prison Experiment. Rick studied with Dr. Stanislav Grof and was among the first to be certified as a Holotropic Breathwork practitioner. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist. He founded MAPS in 1986.
Natalie and I dive into so many things around psychedelic research, policy, and legality. From MDMA, psilocybin , LSD, DMT, Ayahuasca, Mescaline, Ketamine, and Eboga, we discuss what the current research is showing in terms of the various plant medicines and some of the developing legislation and licensure around being able to use these plant medicines in a legal and clinical/therapeutic setting within the United States.
We also touch on cultural appropriation of shamanism in the USA and the pros and cons of some spiritual plant medicine retreats.

Hózhó, Walking In Beauty - Shaun Martin
Starve the Ego Feed the Soul
03/22/21 • 88 min
In this episode I sit down with the phenomenal Shaun Martin. Shaun was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona. He is the founder and race director of the Canyon de Chelly Ultra Marathon, an educator, a husband, a father, a son, and a facilitator of connection. In this talk Shaun shares many amazing things. Stories of his father growing up on the land near the East Rim of the Grand Canyon and being taken from his family at a young age by the United States government.
Shaun provides insight on how to learn and connect with indigenous cultures here and around the world. How we all might be better off for respecting the first inhabitants of the land.
He touches on the reasons behind the Canyon de Chelly Ultra and tells stories about Navajo (Diné) culture.
A Navajo word Shaun mentions throughout this discussion is Hózhó (HoSho). Hózhó is loosely translated as peace, balance, beauty and harmony. To be “in Hózhó” is to be at one with and a part of the world around you. Hozho is a state of being that refers to the interconnectedness between beauty, harmony and goodness in all things physical and spiritual that results in health and well-being for all things and beings.

I have been a life long nerd and it was about time to share a part of how I personally build community on the show. Many clients and follows on social media ask me for recommendations on how to make friends and build community in adulthood. This episode is truly just an example of the many ways you can build deep friendships and grow community in your own life.
Dylan and Cam are the founders of the Play to Win YouTube channel and Play to Win podcast. They create content that is centered around Magic the Gathering, a collectible and competitive card game. The episode is focused around a particular style of Magic called competitive commander or (cEDH). Although this may seem completely out of your wheel house if you didn't grow up playing games like this, I encourage you to listen to the full episode because I do think it is relatable for most people!
You can learn more about cEDH through their YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@PlaytoWinMTG and through their website https://www.playtowinmtg.com/
Huge thanks to Dylan and Cam for coming on the show and sharing an hour with me to talk about the game we love and the community we play in.
