Southpaw - 67 – Red Gyms w/ Reading Red Corner
play

04/24/20 • 72 min

Red Gyms are combat sports gyms created by Leftists that are strictly anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-capitalist, and that puts minorities and marginalized folx at the forefront. We explore what that looks like, how they came to form again in the UK, and their history. We also discuss differences in US vs. UK politics.

This is fight study, where we use professional fights to study the science and art of fighting. We go layers deep, not just to go inside baseball for the superfans, but also to give rich insight for those who want to improve their own skills.

We analyze Renato Moicano vs. "The Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung, Gegard Mousasi vs. Rafael Lovato Jr., and Paulie Malignaggi vs. Artem Lobov. We also discuss what fighters are willing to do when there's no safety net for their health or future—it's combat sports hunger games ya'all.

Sam sits down with philosopher & ethicist Aaron Rabinowitz to discuss ethics, martial arts, politics, I Heart Huckabees, The Good Place, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and Dungeons & Dragons. It's an FAQ on ethics with lots of nerdy analogies.

Southpaw - Fight Study 46 – Reyes vs. Weidman
play

10/20/19 • 22 min

We look at Dominick Reyes (who we've been mentioning for the past year as a future challenger to Jon Jones), fighting Chris Weidman (who we talked about in detail in Fight Study 12: Is the UFC Killing Fighters like Chris Weidman?), then it's the much anticipated rematch of Yair Rodriguez vs. Jeremy Stephens, then it's a prospect eliminator in Maycee Barber vs. Gillian Robertson.

Sam had the opportunity to speak with two members of Warrior Sisters, a nonprofit for empowerment-based, women-centered self-defense education. They discussed martial arts vs. self-defense, removing hierarchy from martial techniques, stereotypes of what self-defense is vs. evidence-based reality, creating an inclusive space, and how self-defense isn't always physical but about space, power dynamics, and horizontal violence. This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in self-defense (especially those interested in starting their own nonprofit program), martial arts, or those looking for practical concepts during these dangerous and trying times.

How would history read if it wasn't from the grand narrative of those in power, but just as it happened? Including all the warts. And since there are so many books that highlight the grand narrative, then we don't need a repeat of what we already know. What we might then need to balance out all that we think we already know is a book that highlights all the warts.

And that's exactly what "A People's History of the United States" (https://amzn.to/2RcWRiQ) by Howard Zinn sets out to do.

This is why any list of books to cover for the Big Ideas series would have to include this book. It's that important. There are people who have read this book and those who have not, and based on that difference, you have a different world-view. And that's the point of big ideas. There's you before these ideas and there's you after.
