Soundtracker

FULL EPISODES OF SOUNDTRACKER CAN ONLY BE FOUND EXCLUSIVELY ON PATREON!

Lots and lots of movies have soundtracks. Some are classics. Some are bad. But the majority fall somewhere in between. This podcast is going to take a look at all of them (or, as many as I can). Every week I'll be covering a different movie that had an original motion picture soundtrack, and then digging into the album. One part film discussion, one part music discussion, the Soundtracker podcast is here to help you navigate the wide world of movies and music. In each episode, myself and a guest discuss the movie and its soundtrack, rate each one, give you our picks for the best songs on the soundtrack, and suggest additional recommendations for what to watch or listen to in relation to whatever we're covering. So join me, as I look back at an era that's largely a thing of the past, and maybe you'll find a new favorite film or song along the way. New episodes every Friday. Theme Song provided by Howell Dawdy of Howell Dawdy's Fast Track https://soundcloud.com/howelldawdysfasttrack. Edited by Ross Reilly (@4_5_and_7). You can follow me on Twitter at @uwebollocks, and follow the show on Twitter at @Soundtracker_ for updates. Help keep the show going! You can do that at www.patreon.com/soundtracker, where you can get 2 monthly bonus episodes and more!

Soundtracker - Episode 56: Romeo + Juliet (with AK Lingus)
play

09/23/22 • 99 min

Today on Soundtracker, I bite my thumb, but not at thee. Unless you're into that. That's right, it's time for another one of the big ones, ROMEO+ JULIET, and joining me is Twitter nice guy and my mortal nemesis, AK Lingus (@aklingus). In this episode we talk about how huge this movie seemed at the time it released, how cleverly it manages to tie Shakespeare's dialogue and themes with modern times, John Leguizamo's excellent turn as Tybalt, why you couldn't make a modern Romeo and Juliet within a few years of this being made, the extremely excellent soundtrack and more. Don't be Fortune's Fool, give this one a listen today!

Halloween continues this week here at Soundtracker, and I'm joined by the host of The Best Little Horror House in Philly, George Heftler (@LittleHorrorPHL) to talk about BLADE. In this episode we talk about how amazing it is that BLADE basically gave us the MCU, the long road to getting the movie made, Wesley Snipes being Wesley Snipes, do our best vampire puns, I (correctly) state that werewolves are better than vampires, talk about the music and more. Some mf'ers are always trying to ice skate uphill. Don't be one of them. Listen to this episode.

The Helldude (@allahliker on Twitter, @helldude.bsky.social over on Bluesky) returns, and this time we're shifting gears from DEEP COVER to REPO MAN, the essential sci-fi punk comedy. In this episode we talk about the long road to this movie becoming the cult classic it is now, Harry Dean Stanton being the greatest difficult actor who ever lived, the punk soundtrack and a lot more. Listen to it while you're eating sushi (and not paying for it).

This is a preview of the most recent Patreon episode, which you can (and more importantly, should) sign up for over at www.patreon.com/soundtracker
Today I'm joined by rapper and fellow Wu-Tang expert JJ Demon (@JJDemonic) to talk about RZA's first foray into film, GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI. In this episode, we talk about how Jim Jarmusch should be allowed to do a big budget action film, how great Forest Whitaker is, how the mob portrayal in this movie could have influenced The Sopranos, and talk a whole load of Wu history as we dig into the Wu-affiliate heavy soundtrack.

Check out JJ's album, Fent City Radical, here: https://open.spotify.com/album/28BB6499tzaTcfe8paIIcA

Today on Soundtracker, I'm joined by the host of the Struggle Session podcast, Leslie Lee III (@leslieleeiii) to talk about Prince's masterpiece, PURPLE RAIN. In this episode we talk about how we got into Prince, the way the movie takes chances when it could have played it safely, and the perfect (yes, perfect) soundtrack album. Give it a listen, and call me up whenever you wanna grind.

Sorry for the delay on this, school is approaching the final lap and it's busy as hell. But here it is: the preview for the March episodes, which you can only find exclusively at www.patreon.com/soundtracker this season. I covered HIGH FIDELITY, with Bobby Big Wheel (@kleinman.bsky.social) and SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER with Jesse Hawken (@jessehawken, @jessehawken.bsky.social) the host of the Junk Filter Podcast (@junkfilterpod) and they ended up going together thematically much more than I ever expected. They're very fun discussions, so I hope you check them out, and if you want more you can find it, once again, at www.patreon.com/soundtracker

It's a very special episode here today on Soundtracker, for a few reasons. First, it's the 100th episode! Second, it's the official start of Soundtracker's 3rd annual Halloween celebration. And finally, I've got Brendan James of the incredible Blowback podcast here to talk with me about RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD.
In this episode, we talk about the music of Blowback, have a long conversation on John Carpenter, talk about horror movies in general, get to the bottom of why zombies are such great fodder for comedy, discuss the underrated way this movie balances true horror with comedy, talk about the subtle anti-Reagan social commentary, and look into the genre of death rock when we talk about the soundtrack.
