BEAR RINEHART: NEEDTOBREATHE's New Music, New Normal
Song Revolution with John Chisum
04/01/21 • 37 min
If you know rock and roll, you know NEEDTOBREATHE. Hailing from Possum Kingdom, SC, this trio of hard rocking musicians have been at it for two decades and counting, straddling Christian and mainstream charts with their own blend of Gospel, roots, and pop.
Show host, John Chisum, sat down recently with the band’s founder and frontman, Bear Rinehart, not long after the birth of Bear’s third child, to talk about the backstories of their new album Out of Body and the new normal they’re in with the departure of Bear’s brother Bo from the group.
NEEDTOBREATHE has won 16 GMA Dove Awards, have been nominated for Grammys, and are a platinum-certified band with over 1M albums sold. They have a solid fan base and have toured with the likes of Tim McGraw & Faith Hill and Taylor Swift. Their 2013 rockumentary Prove the Poets Wrong is a must-see if you’re already a fan or just want to find out more about them.
In this powerful interview, Bear talked a lot about songwriting, demos and production, as well as more intimate subjects like his battle for mental health and how the band has had to come to terms with conflict after he and brother Bo came to a literal brawl after a show a few years back.
Song Revolution with John Chisum is sponsored by Nashville Christian Songwriters, a coaching and resource company dedicated to empowering Christian songwriters worldwide. JOHN CHISUM: Three Steps To Grow Your Calling As A Christian Songwriter
Song Revolution with John Chisum
06/05/23 • 19 min
Welcome to the Song Revolution podcast! In today's episode, we dive into what it takes to grow in your calling as a worship songwriter. Stepping deeper into your calling as a Christian songwriter requires prayer, self-assessment, and action. By seeking God's guidance, honing your skills, and actively pursuing your passion, you can embark on a fulfilling journey of creating music that touches lives and brings glory to God. Here are three key steps to help you dive into your calling as a Christian songwriter:
- Seek God's guidance: Take time to pray and ask God about your specific mission as a songwriter. Discover who He has called you to reach and the message He wants you to convey through your songs. Understand your target audience, their musical preferences, and where they consume music, in order to create songs that resonate with them.
- Assess your talent and musicality: Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses in writing lyrics, melodies, or playing musical instruments. Identify areas where you need improvement and consider investing in training and education to enhance your songwriting skills. Remember that passion and desire are essential, and with dedication and commitment, you can develop your craft.
- Take action: Don't wait for inspiration to strike; actively engage in the process of songwriting. Start by writing new songs, recording demos, or seeking opportunities to perform or collaborate with other musicians. Trust that as you take steps forward, God will guide and direct your path, opening doors and revealing new opportunities along the way. Embrace the journey and be proactive in pursuing your calling as a Christian songwriter.

KRISSY NORDHOFF: Writing Brave Worship
Song Revolution with John Chisum
09/29/18 • 61 min
“One thing I always feared is what if this is the last song I ever write, or what if this is the last good idea I ever have, and that’s a lie from the enemy. You’re always going to write another song, and that’s how you should approach co-writes and rewrites and new versions of songs.”
This week on The Song Revolution Podcast, John sat down with professional songwriter and worship leader, Krissy Nordhoff. Krissy is a writer for Integrity Music, a 3 time Dove Award Nominee, and writer of the dynamic worship song, Your Great Name. She has written songs for several artists including Natalie Grant, Mandisa, Aaron Shust, Darlene Zschech, Lauren Daigle, Anthony Evans, and Meredith Andrews. Krissy also has a mentorship program for women called Brave Worship. In the episode, Krissy shares about this program being birthed from her own desire to have a mentor to help her navigate the music industry and her personal life.
“There are several different purposes for songs. Sometimes we just see we want our songs to reach the whole entire world, but that might not be what the Lord has in mind. It might be a song to bless Him, or a song to bless you personally, or something you want to give as a gift.”
