When I first encountered Sophie Scott, I was struck by her fascinating transformation from Journalist to a beacon in the realm of mental health and neuroscience. Together, we navigate the complexities of our relationship with alcohol, as Sophie shares her experiences and scientific insights. The impact of alcohol on our well-being is profound, and Sophie illuminates the benefits of sobriety with the wisdom of someone who has walked this path personally and professionally. Our conversation spans from embracing the support of a like-minded community to the significance of small, daily mental health practices that can reshape the fabric of our lives.

Sophie Scott's expertise shines as she debunks the myth that alcohol is the antidote for anxiety. Instead, we explore actionable strategies for anxiety management that promote long-term mental health. Our chat about the physiological sigh, a simple yet powerful breathing technique, exemplifies the practical tools one can employ to soothe the nervous system immediately. We unpack the concept of high functioning anxiety, where success hides internal battles, and how small habits can make a big difference in our daily lives without relying on motivation.

Our heartfelt discussion on burnout hits close to home, as we identify its early signs and the importance of timely intervention. Drawing from the Sydney Burnout Study and our personal experiences, we underscore the necessity of setting boundaries and the profound relief found in rest and recuperation. This episode is not just about the struggle but also the catharsis of forging a path to peak performance through self-care and sobriety, all while fostering authentic connections and prioritizing the relationships that truly matter. 03/24/24 • 50 min

We had a few recording mishaps with this episode but we really want to share this story. Discover the strength and resilience it takes to break free from the grips of addiction as my producer Bec joins me to share her profound journey toward sobriety and self-discovery.

She courageously opens up about her evolving relationship with alcohol, the societal pressures that come with social drinking, and the "Mummy Wine Culture" that so many struggle with.

Through her story, we'll uncover the truth behind alcohol's role in our lives and how it intertwines with anxiety, parenting, and the pursuit of mental health and productivity. Beck's narrative takes us through the heart-wrenching effects of childhood trauma and the struggle to escape a cycle of substance abuse and domestic violence. Her experiences with law enforcement, witness protection, and the challenges of growing up in the shadow of a troubled family dynamic paint a vivid picture of her resilience. Yet, amidst the darkness, Beck's story is also one of hope and the possibility of forging a new path, a testament to the human spirit's capacity to survive and thrive against all odds. As we navigate through this conversation, we touch on the transformative power of understanding our past and its influence on our present and future.

Beck commitment to a sober-curious lifestyle not only alters her own life course but also sets a profound example for her child and the broader community. Her tale is a beacon of inspiration, showing us that no matter the adversity one faces, there is always room for change, growth, and the reclamation of joy and fulfillment in life. Join us for a compelling journey that promises to move, educate, and inspire.

I've always admired the quiet strength that comes from overcoming personal battles, and Leesa's story is one of true resilience. At 68, this mother and grandmother shared with us the intimate details of her journey, starting with casual drinks in a culture of social imbibing and escalating to the grips of alcohol dependency. Her candid recount of how her successful career in advertising both masked and exacerbated her struggle is as eye-opening as it is poignant. But Leesa's narrative isn't just about the challenges she faced; it's a testament to the liberating power of sobriety, which she found through the unconventional path of Thrivalist—a departure from the traditional routes many have tried and felt disconnected from.

In our conversation, we peeled back the layers on the societal pressures women face, the balancing act of their many roles, and how self-care is often lost in the fray. Leesa's account illustrates the significance of setting boundaries and the courage it takes to prioritize one's health, even when it means altering the dynamics of close relationships. The dialogue opened a window into the importance of communication and community, which for many women, including the supportive souls at Thrivalist, becomes a lifeline. Their stories go beyond individual struggles, revealing a tapestry of shared experiences and collective triumphs that can only be woven together through vulnerability and mutual support.

As we wrapped up our exchange, the spotlight turned to those curious about what a sober lifestyle might hold for them. The conversation wasn't just a retelling of past events; it was a beacon for those contemplating a similar path, laden with encouragement, practical advice, and a treasure trove of resources. Thrivalist doesn't just offer a hand to hold—it provides a community to walk alongside with, tools for meditation, success stories for motivation, and a virtual space that champions the choice to live authentically, free from the chains of alcohol. Whether you're taking your first tentative steps or are resolutely marching towards sobriety, Leesa's story and the wisdom imparted are a guiding light to anyone ready to embrace the clarity and empowerment of a life unclouded by alcohol.

Sober Not Sorry by Thrivalist - Deep diving a little further into my journey...
play

05/06/24 • 37 min

For this episode, we took a unique approach, delving into my personal journey amidst thought-provoking questions thrown at me in the kindness of ways by my marketing and social media manager, Bec. We embarked on an unexpected heart-to-heart, followed by a few tears as we peeled back the layers of my past experiences with alcohol. We shared tales of navigating the allure of alcohol from the confidence it seemed to promise in my teenage years to the empowerment I ultimately found in sobriety. We explored the evolution of our Aussie drinking culture, from the casual norms of adolescent binge drinking to Friday night knock-off drinks, to the mummy wine culture, corporate world and the heightened pressures of adulthood. We examined the social expectations we have been brought up to believe to be true around alcohol and how one morning, I decided to turn my back on those societal norms and rewrite my own story.

In the midst of our conversation, we delved into the parallels between the restless nights after a few glasses of wine and the inner turmoil they reflected. We unpacked the myths surrounding alcohol, particularly its deceptive allure as a sleep aid and self-medication for anxiety. We also reflected on the fear of missing out (FOMO) that haunts the sober-curious, restless nights, and lingering anxiety post-night out, along with the subsequent daytime fatigue that follows. And, I recounted that pivotal morning that steered me toward a life of sobriety—not from a place of rock bottom but from a desire to regain my power and thrive.

This episode extends beyond my own personal story; it's our hands, reaching out to those struggling and considering a similar path. Thrivalist offers a range of resources, coaching, courses, and community connections to support your journey, whether you're tentatively questioning your drinking habits or confidently striding towards a life of sobriety. Because together, let's walk towards a more authentic, present, and joy-filled life. One only sobriety can bring.

Sober Not Sorry by Thrivalist - Discussing Davey Lloyd’s newly found sobriety
play

08/18/24 • 64 min

In today's episode I had the honour of speaking with Davey Lloyd who many of you might recognize from Sam Frost season of The Bachelorette and his appearance on Bachelor in Paradise. Once widely known as the ultimate party boy, Davey’s life is currently undergoing a significant transformation. After battling cocaine and alcohol addiction for many years and almost losing his life in December 2023 he entered rehab and is now on a path of recovery. From the moment we introduced ourselves I was blown away by his vulnerability as a 34 year old male bravely overcoming addiction. His journey deeply resonated with me and I seriously could have chatted to Davey for hours. You will soon hear that his family means the world to him and that he struggles to accept the word proud when someone throws that his way. but Davey I am so proud of you and I know that once the listeners hear your story you will have that word thrown your way many more times. Davey serves as a reminder that the party boy persona is just a facade and what truly matters most are the layers underneath. I feel honored to have Davey as my first male guest on the podcast and I couldn't be happier to share his story with you. Trigger warning though.....this episode is not for the faint hearted or for young ears but one that you will most likely never forget.

I hope you enjoy the episode

With love and sobriety,

Georgie I x
