Slow Style Home - Your Home Needs Art! with Danielle Krysa
play

04/13/20 • 37 min

Hello and welcome to the Style Matters podcast, brought to you by Little Yellow Couch. I'm Zandra, your host, and I'm so glad you're here but you've caught us during a break! That doesn't mean you should tune out, though, because during this break, I'm re-releasing some of my all time favorite episodes from the archives! And today, you'll hear from someone who really helps us understand why and how to bring original art into our homes. Danielle Krysa is an artist herself, she's also written several books about art and creativity, and she's the magician behind the very popular blog, The Jealous Curator, where she introduces us to and champions other artists, many of whom, you might want to bring into your home yourself. This episode was first released in 2016 and included my co-host, Karen Grant, so you'll hear her voice along with mine and Danielle's. If you're interested in checking out what she does, you can find links to her sites on the show notes page of these re-released episodes at littleyellowcouch.com. On a side note, I'd really like to encourage you to think about brining artwork that feels personal and meaningful to you into your home, even during this time of crisis. There are lots of ways to find artists online and support them while we're all stuck inside and not able to go to galleries or art fairs. Hopefully the corono-virus will not be taking over our lives for too much longer but we really don't know, do we? So my other purpose in re-releasing this and all of these older episodes is to give you something fun and inspirational to listen to and think about. I'll be back with all new interviews starting May 4th. Ok, let's jump back in time and hear what Danielle Has to say.

Slow Style Home - My Scandinavian Home - Nikki Brantmark
play

10/09/17 • 38 min

Popular blogger Nikki Brantmark of My Scandinavian Home is our guest this week. She has won numerous awards for her work and is recognized for bringing Scandinavian style to the world outside Northern Europe. We talk with her about her recent book "The Scandinavian Home," which examines three different kinds of living spaces across the Scandi countries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Nikki shares her perceptive eye for design from the vantage of being a transplant from London. By the end of this interview, we wanted to move to Sweden, right next to her in the town of Malmo, in a house by the sea. You probably will, too! Also check out Nikki's newest book "Lagom: Not Too Little, Not Too Much: The Swedish Art of Living a Balanced, Happy Life".

I was talking with designer Anne Hulcher Tollett on the Style Matters podcast about the importance of having objects in a room "in dialogue" with one another.

In our first episode of the last season of 2022, I share the main projects I've been working on behind the scenes during our podcast break in October. They are a book proposal... it'll be all about my Slow Style framework for design. I'm very excited about the possibility of getting this thing published! Second, I talk about an upcoming, free masterclass I'll be teaching in November. If you've ever been stuck in your design efforts, you'll want to sign up for that!

My guest today is Ariel Garneau who is known for her bold, colorful, quirky, somewhat retro, mash up of styles. I wanted to know where it comes from, how she defines it and how it's evolved over time.

Podcast Q&A

Why did you start this show?

When the show first aired over 6 years ago, it was called "Style Matters." My home and the adornment of it has always felt like a meaningful pursuit, tied to self expression and self reflection. We wanted to hear from others about the substance behind the style so we asked people in the interior design profession the question, "why does style matter?" The show has evolved and changed names, but that foundational question is still there.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

I've developed a framework for teaching people how to create their own signature style within their homes. Along with interviewing top designers in the world, I also share parts of that framework on the show. I hope people learn something from both! I want you to feel inspired and confident to start developing your visual autobiography inside your home!

Which episode should someone start with?

"The Slow Style Approach To Creating Your Dream Home," gives an overview of my design philosophy so that you can see if the Slow style approach will work for you. https://a.pdcst.to/7QoZv2jZ8N28YhZl/https://pdst.fm/e/https://chrt.fm/track/B5EEDA/www.buzzsprout.com/869740/13513717-the-slow-style-approach-to-creating-your-dream-home.mp3?download=true

Which have been your favourite episodes so far?

There are over 300 so I can't pick just one! I'll share some recent favorites that really embody the nature of the podcast overall: "Light, Texture, and Embracing Imperfection: The Design Philosophy of Sarah Solis" "What Landscapes Teach Us About Design: Lucy Hunter Mixes The Natural World With Bold Structure" "Transform Your Home and Your Mind: The Psychology Behind Interior Design with Anita Yokota" "Venice Beach Design Vibes with Lizzie McGraw"

Which episode are you most proud of?

This is an interesting question! I guess I'm proud of the episodes when, as an interviewer, I'm really able to help my guest articulate a core message that I know will be helpful to my listeners. Because design is so visual, it's sometimes hard for designers to spell out abstract concepts. I work hard to make them accessible to everyone.

What is your vision for your show?

My vision for the show is that Slow Style becomes a movement of sorts... a stand against disposable decor and a commitment to decorating mindfully, putting people at the center of our homes rather than products.

What is your favourite other podcast that isn't yours?

So many! Here are a few that are currently on my playlist: "At Home With The Intuitive Cook" "Classy" "Freakonomics" "Hidden Brain" "More Perfect"

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

I already talked about the original name in the first question. The new name, "Slow Style Home," came from the teaching framework I've been working on for the past few years. It refers to the Slow Food movement, where natural, local and carefully made food is celebrated. Quite honestly, I added the word "Home" so that people would know it's not a fashion podcast! The word "style" can certainly apply to both.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm right in the middle of the extrovert/introvert continuum; I've learned over the years to stop hiding what embarrasses me because it allows other people to open up as well; and that true compassion and kindness is how you start healing any rift. I have 2 kids, one with special needs. I live in the Boston area and love the Patriots and the change of seasons. Travel and art are two passions that fuel my interior style. I'm writing my first book, aptly named "Slow Style Home!"
