John Vincent - How to Truly Do Good Work and What Taoism Tells Us About the Meaning of Life
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
05/14/22 • 73 min
This week's episode is one of Slo Mo's first ever face-to-face interviews, filmed and recorded on my portable studio in a little Airbnb in London. Slo Mo is hitting the road, so expect a lot more of these in the coming weeks.
In this episode, I speak with John Vincent, whose guiding principle in life and business is a commitment to help make things better. John co-founded the fast-food chain, Leon, in 2004 with the mission to create "Naturally Fast Food": food that tastes good, does you good and is kind to the planet. He has lead projects such as the UK government’s School Food Plan and chairs the Council for Sustainable Business. John recently founded The Longhouse, a home to positively disruptive people, brands and companies that protect and improve life on earth. He is also the author of Winning Not Fighting: Why you need to rethink success and how you achieve it with the Ancient Art of Wing Tsun .
If you think this episode is going to be about the restaurant business, you will be disappointed. This is nothing short of an exploration of how we can tap back into the universal purpose of life.
Listen as we discuss:
- How I met John through our mutual friend, Danny Donachie (see ep. 169)
- Doing business for good vs. maintaining an image of good to do more business.
- Instead of seeing life as a journey, we should see it as an opportunity to play.
- Rerouting ourselves back to the present is the fundamental goal.
- John’s story of founding Leon.
- A primer on taoism and the difference between morality, goodness, and truth.
- The role of ritual in all spiritual disciplines, and the dangers of "pop spirituality".
- The truth about CEO's: they are the number one slave to the company.
- A call for more Natural Capital Accounting, and why bribes were once tax deductible.
- What’s the first step we can take to increase business for good?
- The importance of rhythm on human longevity and how to truly dance.
- What we can learning from the Time Gods.
- What’s John’s biggest achievement in life?
- How does John define happiness? Rediscovering yourself.

Dr. Robert Glover (Part 2) - Why Women are the Most Sexually Evolved Beings on Earth
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
11/04/20 • 40 min
Note: Despite the title, this conversation is equally for men and women. I'm aware this is a controversial conversation, but I believe it holds great value if listened to with an open mind. This is Part 2 of 2.
This is Part 2 of my discussion with Dr. Robert Glover, author of the brilliant, often life-altering, and slightly controversial bestselling classic, No More Mr. Nice Guy. It may not sound like the kind of book I'd read, but it is a little piece of self-help magic and has helped countless people recognize their own "Nice Guy Syndrome": the trait of hiding feelings and truths that we fear will get a negative reaction from other people so as to maintain the belief that we are "nice", leading to a host of toxic relationships and fundamentally dishonest behaviors.
Robert is an internationally recognized authority on the Nice Guy Syndrome, and through his book, classes, and therapy groups, he has helped thousands of Nice Guys transform from being passive, resentful victims to empowered, integrated males, transforming their professional careers and intimate relationships along the way.
In Part 2, we discuss:
- Co-dependency: "I don't exist unless I'm in a relationship"
- Healthy interdependence
- The 'hugging until relaxed' exercise
- Calm is contagious
- You can want your partner, but as soon as you start needing them, you lose them
- To have the best sex, there needs to be a dominance of interplay and submission
- Equal does not mean the same
- Using men's motivatio
- n to have sex as motivation to expand their emotional intelligence
- The struggle between man vs. woman as a profound catalyst for growth
- The lingering effect of not having our childhood needs meet
- Women are the sexual Ferraris and men are sexual mopeds
- "Slut shaming"
- The Disney and Hollywood effect on women's perception of monogamy
- Repressing female sexuality has become par for the course
- Men need a tribe

Dr. Robert Glover (Part 1) - How to Stop Being a "Nice Guy" and Get What You Want from Life
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
10/31/20 • 48 min
Note: Despite the title, this conversation is equally for men and women. Listen with an open mind. This is Part 1 of 2.
Today's guest is Dr.
Before we get started, I again implore you stay open minded for this conversation. You will laugh, you may cringe, you may violently disagree or surprisingly agree, but this is as honest as discussions on human relationship dynamics can get. You will find some serious gems related to dating and maintaining relationships of any kind.
In Part 1, we discuss:
- What is wrong with being a nice guy?
- How 'nice guys' are often dishonest, resentful, and give to get
- How Robert's second marriage was falling apart despite his best efforts to be nice
- The "Victim Pukes"
- The confused belief that if sex is bad and evil, why should it only be for the one you love?
- The three covert contracts that lead to toxic relationships
- The reason men become nice guys is due to desiring the validation of women
- The crucial need for a stronger involvement of fathers in their sons' lives
- Nice guy logic: "If I have needs, I'm bad, yet I want things, but won't accept them"
- For women to experience sexual attraction, they need to experience emotional tension
- "If a man can't stand up to me, how can he stand up for me?"
- The effect of 50 Shades of Grey on society
- Human women are the most sexually evolved creatures on the planet, and men are apes

Charles Groenhuijsen (Part 1) - The U.S. Elections and All the Reasons to Be Optimistic
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
10/21/20 • 34 min
For nearly 40 years, my guest today, Charles Groenhuijsen, has been a beloved and reliable figure in Dutch news media. In the mid-80s, Charles became the youngest chief correspondent ever to be stationed in Washington D.C. for Dutch television, overseeing all US news. In 1996 Charles returned to the United States and was appointed Bureau-chief for NOS tv and radio based in Washington D.C. Nowadays he is an independent writer, speaker and consultant who has written many columns and a number of bestselling books on American culture.
Anyone who has followed my work knows I don't care too much for politics, but I felt it was important to showcase Charles, as he is exactly the kind of journalist the world needs. He is outspoken regarding news media's focus on conveying the negative and the sensational, preaching that optimism (and realism) is not only the more ethical route for news reporting, but also, statistically, the more warranted route. Most things are better than ever, and it's about time the media helped us feel that.
In Part 1, listen as we discuss:
- Optimism in the media, and how journalists and news networks can do better
- How we're being raised wrong by the media that thinks "good news is not news"
- How a long-term focus shows overwhelmingly positive progress in the world overall
- Crisis as a catalyst for change
- Things like gay marriage, which were unimaginable 30 years ago, but have happened
- Good old Donald Trump
- How the majority of American people want another America with more equality, climate policy, universal healthcare, gun control
- The desperation emanating from Republicans pre-election
- Is the US a real democracy?
- Charles' advice to Americans after November 3rd
- The laughable idea of trying to control the lives of others with your personal politics
- Keeping hope alive

Romero Britto - Becoming the Most Licensed Artist in History with Happy Art
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
10/17/20 • 40 min
Today's guest is the world renowed Brazilian artist, Romero Britto, the founder of the Happy Art Movement. Romero has created a visual language of love, hope and happiness that blends Pop Art with Cubist-like abstraction to reflect his optimistic view of the world around him. He was self-taught from an early age, painting on scraps of paper or cardboard, before coming into his own and traveling to Paris where he was introduced to the works of Matisse and Picasso.
Britto’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in over 100 countries and he has created public art installations in almost every major city you can think of. He is considered the most licensed artist in history and is an activist for charitable organizations worldwide.
In this rare interview, Romero opens up and discusses his personal upbringing, parenting, and how he went from rough beginnings in Brazil to become one of the most successful artists of all time - all through art that makes people happy.
Listen as we discuss:
- The underemphasized responsibility of parenting, which is to love
- How there's no test for being a parent as there is a test for a driver's license
- His eight siblings, his parents, and his upbringing
- Romero's early shyness and how he grew into a public personality
- How the responsibility of a parent is their child's impact on the world
- Why Romero's art is so happy
- Dealing with the worst side of art - the business
- How his life is like a dream everyday
- Parents need to support children's interests so they can wake up feeling happy everyday
- How he comes up with so many ideas

Kasia Urbaniak (Part 1) - A Former Dominatrix on Power Dynamics and "Good Girl Conditioning"
Slo Mo: A Podcast with Mo Gawdat
11/18/20 • 44 min
Today’s guest is the one-of-a-kind (I say that confidently) Kasia Urbaniak, the founder and CEO of The Academy, a school that teaches women the foundations of power and influence. Kasia's perspective on power is unique. Over the course of nearly 20 years, she has worked as a professional Dominatrix, practiced Taoist alchemy in one of the oldest female-led monasteries in China and obtained dozens of certifications in different disciplines, including Medical Qi Gong and Systemic Constellations. Since founding The Academy in 2013, Kasia has taught hundreds of women practical tools to step into leadership positions in their relationships, families, workplaces, and wider communities. Her forthcoming book, UNBOUND: A Woman's Guide to Power, will be released in March 2021.
Kasia is announcing a unique offer for Slo Mo listeners. Any woman who pre-orders her book will gain a free seat to her incredibly valuable training, the The Good Girl Reform School, which starts November 24th and normally costs $750. Listen to this conversation and decide for yourself if you want to attend, but I absolutely recommend it. Kasia is brilliant.
(Disclaimer: Slo Mo receives no financial compensation for this endorsement, and, like all recommendations on the podcast, is genuine).
In Part 1, we discuss:
- Kasia's seriously incredible story
- Her experiences as a dominatrix, where you'll learn more about the art than you ever thought existed
- How she went to teach other dominatrices her method
- Bein born into a world that made no sense to her
- The reason she become a dominatrix: earn money to pursue spiritual journey
- The difference between "performing power" vs. leading from a place of care
- Power dynamics, and how we find them everywhere, and how that's not a bad thing
- How men don't know how to make women happy, and women stay silent and angry about it
- Good girl conditioning, and how to reform it
- Reacting to life with attention in vs. attention out
- Curiosity is one of the best ways to get through conflict and come out with gold
