Sgt. Bilko
Slept-On Cinema
02/21/25 • 81 min
Steve Martin’s Sgt. Bilko is a masterclass in doing the least and getting away with everything. He’s running a full-scale casino, dodging actual military duties, and somehow still beloved by everyone on base—except for Phil Hartman’s Major Thorn, who spends the entire movie in a slow-motion meltdown.
We’re joined by comedian Gus Tate, who can’t believe Sgt. Bilko has a 31% critic score and a 47% audience score. As Gus put it:
"What the f** is going on? What’s wrong with Sgt. Bilko?"* 64 Sgt-BilkoThis episode breaks it all down, including:
🎲 Bilko’s best scams (and why we’d 100% pay extra for those “special towels”) 64 Sgt-Bilko
🎰 Why the army seems totally fine with an on-base casino
🐎 The most unexpected horse cameo in military history
🚀 That out-of-control hovercraft and why no one in the Pentagon stopped it
And of course, Gus shares how Steve Martin’s ridiculous salute in this movie has completely ruined normal hand gestures for him:
"The way he salutes in this movie has totally influenced the way I greet people. I physically can’t NOT do it now." 64 Sgt-BilkoThis is the 90s mid-budget comedy we miss, and we’re giving it the Slept-On Cinema treatment.

Over The Top
Slept-On Cinema
12/02/21 • 29 min
Join us, Stan Steamer and Grobe Street, as we take a gripping journey through the rough-and-tumble world of arm wrestling in the much-debated film 'Over the Top.' We grapple with the critics' disdain and the audience's mild appreciation, questioning the chasm between their perceptions and the glowing portrayal on Amazon Prime. Our talk meanders through the Reagan-era zeitgeist and the infamous legacy of Canon Films, known for their low-budget flicks and their curious method of selling movies through stellar posters alone. From the allure of Sylvester Stallone's star power to the chaos of an 18-hour arm wrestling event in Vegas, we cover the quirky strategies that led to Canon's financial nosedive and how it bizarrely connected to the lackluster special effects in "Superman 4."
Pour yourself a Boiler Maker or our signature "jet fuel" whiskey-infused coffee, and settle in for a laugh with our take on 'Over the Top.' Listen in as we draft our favorite moments, from Hawks's hat-flipping antics to the absurdities of on-screen arm wrestling, including face-slapping rituals and product placements that are as blatant as they are amusing. We marvel at the offbeat charm of characters like John Grizzly, and the implausible yet hilarious sight of children driving semi-trucks. Our conversation peels back the layers of this cult classic, revealing a cinematic gem that's unabashed in its portrayal of an underdog story wrapped in a sports movie.
Cap off your cinematic adventure with our reflection on the 1987 landscape as captured by 'Over the Top,' a film that bottles the essence of its era with astonishing accuracy. We suggest it deserves recognition as a historical artifact, from its hairdos to its soundtrack. Teasing our upcoming episode, we switch gears from the high-stakes world of arm wrestling to the spine-tingling chills of "Jeepers Creepers." Ready your nerves for a return to this early 2000s horror flick, and join our exploration of its enduring scare factor. Tune in for our engaging discussions and quirky insights that will have you revisiting these films with fresh eyes.
