KO was born and raised in Japan until 12 years old and Tomo until 10. Sumie spent majority of childhood until mid-teenage years in the US. Though we live in different countries now, could we ever see ourselves moving back to where we used to live at this moment in our lives? Could we move our families there? We all surprise each other during this episode. Maybe you will see one of us taking that step in the future.

2024 is here! We discuss resolutions for the year as well as how the holiday is celebrated in each country.
The most important holiday in Japan is welcoming the new year. We discuss all the traditions which start, immediately the day after Christmas.

Some of the Japanese terms used in the podcast:
忘年会 (bounenkai) - work year-end party
門松 (kadomatsu)- a bamboo decoration placed in pairs in front of homes and buildings
しめ飾り (shimekazari)- a decoration made from rice straws hung outside at the top of the entrance door
鏡餅 (kagami mochi)- a decoration with two mochi discs stacked on top of each other with Japanese bitter orange placed on top. This signifies the overlap between happiness and fortune and therefore brings luck and positive resolutions in the new year.
お節料理 (osechiryouri)- traditional Japanese new year's food
紅白歌合戦 (kouhaku uta gassen)- is an annual music program that has been broadcasting on TV and radio on NYE since 1951
年越し蕎麦 (toshikoshi soba)- aka new year soba noodles. It's said that eating this is to cut off the misfortune of the previous year.
お年玉 (otoshidama)- money given to children in a special envelope from parents and relatives
福笑い (fukuwarai)- pin the tail. The objective of the game is to place cutouts of eyes, nose, and mouth in a blank face canvas.
羽根突き(hanetsuki)- traditional Japanese badminton

We'll reminisce about the days of rushing to answer house phones without caller ID, the freedom of leaving home without being reachable, and doing long hours of traveling without an electronic device. Listen in as we reflect on how life has changed, comparing our unplugged upbringing to the hyper-connected reality our kids face today.

This year, we celebrated Christmas and New Year's in Japan, where the winter weather greeted us with surprisingly mild weather. Our whole family gathered at Sumie's house in Kanagawa prefecture for an unforgettable holiday weeks. In this episode, we share perspectives of our non-Japanese family members as they reflect on what captivated them the most about Japan and its custom and culture. From their admiration of the country’s highly efficient public transportation to their fascination with the ubiquitous vending machines, our family reunion turns into a fun exploration of the cultural contrasts between Japan, the U.S., and Germany. KO and Tomo also chime in on what surprised them on their return to Japan this time.
