In a recent bite sized podcast I outlined the steps you could take to improve your swim performance. Today I'm discussing how to improve your cycling. Cycling is by far the biggest portion of any triathlon and so if you have a strong bike, that will enhance not only your overall time but also your ability to run well (as long as you don't push too hard on the bike). In today's bite sized podcast I outline some steps you can take to boost your bike performances in 2024, including:
  • Why you should be realistic and consistent
  • The importance of mobility and strength
  • Ways to improve your technique
  • Embrace group riding and improve your bike handling skills
  • Test regularly to set targets and check progress
Finally, I have some advice on the type of sessions you might choose and some guidance for the older athletes who feel they might be stagnating a little. I hope that by the time you've finished listening, you'll have a little more clarity and you can fine-tune your training goals for the winter. And if you don’t like smashing yourself in every session, this episode provides other options available to become a better cyclist. Some other podcasts you might find useful after listening to this episode are: Super cycle coach Matt Bottrill on how to get faster - Part 1 & Part 2 Tom Morisson - Simplistic Mobility Method Jacques DeVore - Strength training for cyclists If you're a new listener, you can subscribe to the podcast HERE so that you never miss an episode! Today's guest is Margaret Sills. I met Margaret about 20 years ago when she asked me to coach her. During the time we worked together she represented GB triathlon as an age grouper and also qualified for Kona twice. I can still remember waiting at the finish line for her to complete her first Kona (which she mentions in the conversation). She had some struggles on the day but she made it and as she crossed the line I had a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. The reason I invited Margaret on to the show this week is to talk about her 40 years as a triathlete. In 2023 she finished her final event, almost exactly 40 years to the day from her first event in 1983. This, by the way, makes her a pioneer of triathlon in the UK, as the event she completed in Northampton all those years ago was one of the very first UK triathlons. I enjoyed the reminiscing, and I hope you do too!
  • Northampton - That first triathlon in 1983
  • Emotional - The final triathlon in 2023
  • 40 years in triathlon and never injured
  • Fitting training around life
  • Dealing with life’s challenges - menopause, heart problems
  • A lifetime of adventures - Race across America (twice), LEJOG, mountain biking in the Himalayas
  • Standing on the podium as a GB age group team member

The word “legend” is used too frequently these days, like describing the pizza delivery guy who arrives when you’re hungry.  However, in the case of this week’s guest, calling him a legend is absolutely the right word.  Dave Scott is “The Man”! He’s won the Ironman World Championships no less than 6 times and in its early days he was dominant. He retired and then made a comeback at the age of 40, finishing second behind rising star Greg Welch. Since his last Ironman in 2001, Dave has carved out a career as a triathlon coach (advising other Ironman World champions such as Craig Alexander and Chrissie Wellington) and motivational speaker.

When I first started in triathlon, there were no coaches but I did manage to find a triathlon book, Dave Scott Triathlon Training, which I still have to this day. In fact, I managed to get it autographed by Dave when we met for the first time at the Eilat triathlon in 1989.

Dave is a forthright character and isn’t afraid to voice his opinion.  When you listen to this conversation you’ll get real insight to one of the greatest Ironman triathletes ever, including:

  • How depression sometimes meant Dave struggled to even start his sessions
  • Following the low fat/high carb Pritikin diet and why Dave did a 180 and adopted a Keto diet
  • Rinsing cottage cheese to get rid of the fat
  • When you have been an Ironman world champion and you develop heart problems
  • Dave Scott on strength training for triathletes
  • Why Ironman have done a good job during the COVID19 pandemic
  • PTO and why it’s a great opportunity for professional triathlon

If you would like to follow Dave you can find him on all of the social media channels listed below.

The best place to find him is his website https://davescottinc.com/ where you can sign up for his regular newsletter

Dave and I chatted about many topics and made references to other resources.

These are the books Dave has been inspired by

Thinking Fast & Slow - Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize

The 3 year swim club - The untold story of “sugar ditch” kids in Maui and their quest for Olympic glory

Boulder isn’t just a great place for triathletes to hang out. These days it seems like a large number of my guests also hang out there including today’s guest, Dina Griffin.

Dina is a sports dietician who not only addresses needs related to disease and illness but also takes a proactive approach in optimizing health to prevent disease, deficiencies, and breakdowns via personalized sports nutrition coaching, consulting, and physiology testing. I have specifically invited her onto the show to chat about nutrition for female athletes.

I first met Dina, virtually of course, when she presented this topic to a group of TrainingPeaks coaches a few weeks back and I thought, why have we never had a guest on to speak about this? So here she is and it’s another great conversation as we discuss:

  • Why nutrition education is an important first step to improving your health and performance
  • Key differences to female physiology in Pre, peri, and post menopause
  • The differences in nutritional approach during each phase
  • How and what to adjust in your nutrition programme during the low and high hormone phases of your monthly cycle
  • Some training alterations you might want to consider during the same phase
  • Benefits of protein and why you should probably eat more
  • Lift Heavy Stuff regardless of your age (TIP: The third time this topic has come up. If you haven’t got the message yet....)
  • Gut health and why focussing on this in your 30’s will help during peri-menopause
  • Supplements - should you take them and if so which ones

Since COVID19 hit the world, triathletes have suffered just like everyone else. Limited opportunities to train and virtually no racing apart from virtual. The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has been a big help to triathlon, distributing grants to help athletes survive and in recent months, bumping up the prize purse at selected races (£15k for Helvellyn and Outlaw X in the UK) for the pro athletes racing. On December 6 the PTO Challenge Daytona will air and this event will have the biggest prize purse ever offered for a professional triathlon race with £1,150,000. There will be an equal number of pro male and female starters and the prize pots are identical. In another first, the prize money will be distributed among all athletes with every starter guaranteed to take home a minimum of $2500.

In this week’s episode, I talk to 2 talented Canadian athletes who will be racing in Daytona.

Taylor Reid has five professional 70.3 victories (including three Ironman 70.3 victories) and has been on the podium fifteen times. After chasing the Olympic dream for 7 years, he had some success winning the U23 Canadian Champion in 2013. He then made the switch to long-course triathlon in 2014, focusing on the Ironman 70.3 events all around the world. The longer event, which required more endurance, suited his strengths. Alongside his triathlon career, Taylor is also a spokesperson for dyslexia, sharing his story with the world to help raise awareness about dyslexia.

Jackson Laundry is a two-time Ironman 70.3 champ (Raleigh 2018, Mont Tremblant 2019) and has eleven 70.3 podiums. He was also the winner and co-organizer of the 2020 Canadian pro tri championship, a race that he and Taylor decided to host in order to give the community something to look forward to and give fellow athletes a high level race. It was a huge success, bringing many of the top Canadian athletes together, with their own private TV crew and CBC coverage. Taylor is also the co-host of "The Real Triathlon Podcast” and has had a successful virtual race season in 2020, taking 4th place at the 2020 Zwift pro tri series, 2nd place at Ironman VR14, and winning 1 stage of the Super League e-series.

Listen in to the interesting conversation with these two enthusiastic, personable and professional triathletes trying to make their way in the world and giving back a little as they continue their journey. Hopefully you’ll appreciate this as well as we chat about:

  • Life as a pro triathlete - living the dream or scraping a living
  • The life of a professional triathlete during lockdown in Canada
  • How COVID 19 has disrupted their training and racing plans
  • PTO and the impact it’s having on professional triathlon
  • An athlete turned race organizer, and getting a better appreciation of the work done by race promoters and volunteers
  • Challenge Daytona

In today’s show, another of my old coaching buddies is back to chat about what’s been happening in his coaching world during the last 6 months.

David Tilbury Davis is a triathlon coach who works with athletes who have a ”performance mindset”. Among the athletes he currently works with are Lionel Sanders, Kim Morrison, and Rasmus Svenningsson and we chat about each of them today.

I’ve known David for over 20 years during which time his journey has seen him progress from novice to one of the world’s prominent long-distance triathlon coaches via Spain, Texas, Seattle, and now Finland.

I love watching my friends develop on their own journeys and David is no different. It’s a real pleasure to welcome him back onto the show to share some of the knowledge and experience he’s gained in the last two decades. I just wish that this catch-up could have been over a beer or two at some race venue but that’ll have to wait for another time. For now, listen in as we chat about:

  • The Lionel Sanders 1-hour Canadian record attempt
  • Differences between riding a track bike and a TT bike (TIP: there are way more than you think)
  • Training like a triathlete while aiming to break a cycling record
  • Combining a cycling record attempt with setting a 5k running PB
  • Rasmus Svenningsson solo sub-8 hour Ironman
  • Giving athletes free rein to try something different
  • David’s thoughts on the upcoming PTO Challenge Daytona Pro race
  • Why polarised training for triathletes is not quite as simple as 80/20

To follow David on social media or find out a bit more about him or his athletes please use the following links

David mentioned the performance profiling document he uses with new athletes. It’s based on this research paper:

Pelletier, L. G., Fortier, M. S., & Vallerand, R. J. (1995). Toward a new measure of intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and motivation in sports: The Sport Motivation Scale (SMS).

We also discussed this paper with regard to polarised training for triathletes - The Polarization-Index: A Simple Calculation to Distinguish Polarized From Non-polarized Training Intensity Distributions

03/25/20 • 67 min

In this week’s podcast we have another hot topic - mental toughness.  A few weeks ago, superstar Ironwoman Lucy Gossage launched a new 6 part mental skills programme with her Sports Psychologist, Helen Davis.  I have known Lucy for many years and watched most of her victories, and I always assumed that racing at the front came completely natural to her. As you will hear in this conversation I was totally off the mark. Lucy is also an oncology doctor currently working at Nottingham City Hospital so is experiencing the Coronavirus situation on the front line. Whether you use mental skills for improving race performances or handling tough life situations, you are sure to find this podcast very informative.  Please make sure you read the show notes for details of a discount code that you can use if you wish to sign up with her programme.

In today’s conversation Lucy, Helen Davis and special guest, Masters Swim World record holder, Helen Gorman chat about:

  • Lucy’s current work in the NHS and her first hand experiences of the COVID19 situation
  • How the “iron-mind” skills are helping Lucy in her workplace at this very moment
  • Why my perceptions of how Lucy raced were totally wrong
  • Finishing 2nd at Ironman New Zealand on just 2 weeks of running
  • Helen Gorman explains how mental strength can help with your swim performance
  • When COVID19 recedes, how to manage expectations when you finally get back to racing

They say we all have a book in us. The trouble is that most of us never take the time to commit our thoughts or life experiences to paper. If you did it might turn out to be witty, insightful, life-changing. Today's guest Brock Gibbs did just that as he recounts his triathlon experiences in the book “My Co-workers Think I’m a Pro”. If you've been on your own triathlon journey then I’m sure you’ll find a lot of similarities with Brock’s story as we chat about:

  • The frustration of injury
  • Triathlon terminology, training kit, racing - from feeling like an outsider to becoming part of the in-crowd
  • Why you hate the volunteers & spectators when you are having a bad day
  • Training - why just doing more and harder probably isn’t the right way
  • A pre-race nutrition like you’ve never heard before and why you shouldn’t drink in the bath
  • Is it really necessary to deflate and then inflate tyres in T1?
  • The pre-race port-a-loo lineup
  • Mentoring newbies in T1?
  • Brock's advice to other newbies doing their first triathlon?

If you would like to purchase a copy of Brock’s book, go to "My Co-workers think I’m a pro"

You can also purchase at Waterstones

Brock has a blog that he tries to add to every two weeks and this will be the basis for his next book www.thehacktriathlonblog.ca

Brock also recommended a couple of his favourite books:

Draft Animals: Living The Pro Cycling Dream by Phil Gaimon and

Shadows On The Road: Life At The Heart Of The Peloton by Michael Barry.

We also chatted about...

The Julie Moss and the famous crawl at Ironman Hawaii - if you’ve never watched this it's inspiring and traumatic

Simon Ward, The High Performance Human Triathlon Podcast - Riding the bike is the easy part (even though it's 3,500k and 55,000m climbing)! James Risley part 2
play

01/17/24 • 80 min

This week we're back with James Risley as we continue the conversation about riding Le Loop - 3,500km of riding with 55,000m (yes, FIFTY FIVE HUNDRED METRES) of climbing, including some of the toughest climbs in France and Spain. Last week we talked about the preparation for the event and navigating life challenges - work, relationships, sleep - in order to get enough miles on the clock. In today’s episode we talk about the event itself and James outlines a few issues he never even considered prior to Le Loop - like what happens when 100 riders are in a line waiting to get coffee at 6am and there is only ONE slow coffee machine. In this episode you’ll get a real idea of how, even when things are way less than perfect, the human body can still get things done, as long as you let the mind do its thing.
  • Feet, hands, and butt might be more important than fitness on a multi day ride
  • Processed carbs and a lack of protein
  • It's like riding in the 90’s - no Garmin, just arrows to follow
  • Why it’s important to choose roommates carefully
  • Beware the post-event depression
  • What next?
The best place to find out more about James and to contact him if you have questions about Le Loop is on LinkedIn. Click on the link find out more about Le Loop. William Wates Memorial Trust - this is the charity which runs and organises Le Loop. They support projects that encourage young people who experience severe disadvantage to keep away from anti-social behaviour and criminal activity, enabling them to fulfil their potential.
