Rich Reed is in his 17th Season as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at his alma mater, the University of La Verne in Southern California. He has been coaching for 22 years including 5 years at the NCAA D1 level with stops Sacramento State, Northern Colorado, Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly Pomona. He is currently the Co-Chair of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Committee on Academics and one of the truly bright stars in the world of NCAA D3 basketball.

Rich and I spent 3 years together coaching the men and women's basketball teams, respectively, at the University of La Verne where we developed a lifelong bond and brotherhood. He also graced me by writing the College Coach Perspective in Chapter 6 of my book on how to create the right Attack List for college recruits looking to be recruited by the right coaches at the right schools. Enjoy!

Significant Coaching with Matt Rogers - Episode #10: Pete Sterbick

Episode #10: Pete Sterbick

Significant Coaching with Matt Rogers

play

01/26/24 • 53 min

Pete Sterbick is the Head Football Coach at the Colorado School of Mines, and it was a pleasure watching his team play in the NCAA D2 National Championship game on national TV in mid-December, 2023. I was so impressed I had to call and get him on the podcast. As a local Colorado guy, most people were excited about what Deion Sanders did this year at the University of Colorado, but the best coach in the state, and the one who actually led his team to the National Championship game, is Coach Sterbick.

Coach Sterbick is not only a world class coach and offensive mind, but he is truly a good man and a thoughtful leader of young men. He is another coach who epitomizes what it means to be a significant coach, and the sky is truly the limit for him and his program.

We had a great conversation about recruiting, the NCAA Portal, the present and future of NIL, Coach DeBoer going from NAIA coach to the D1 National Title Game to now the Head Coach of the University of Alabama, and I couldn't waste an opportunity to talk to an offensive guru about Justin Fields and my Chicago Bears! We had a fun conversation, and I walked away impressed with the man and the coach, Peter Sterbick. Enjoy!

Scott Winterburn is the Head Baseball Coach at the University of La Verne in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).

After leading his alma Mater, Asuza Pacific, for one year, Scott took over the Leopard program in 2001 and quickly turned it into a national power.

He’s led the Leo’s to 6 SCIAC titles and 8 NCAA National Tournaments in the last 23 years. Most recently, he was named SCIAC Coach of the Year and D3baseball.com Region 10 Coach of the Year in 2023 and 2024.

He’s had 6 players move on to play professionally including Scott Lindeen who was a 26th round pick by the Miami Marlins in 2005 and his All-American son, Joe Winterburn who was drafted in the 40th round by the Boston Red Sox in 2014.

After 32 years of collegiate coaching, Burn still has the same energy and passion for coaching he had in his twenties and let me tell you, it’s contagious.

We had a great conversation about everything from program building, the new NCAA roster and scholarship rules and of course his great wisdom and advice to families about college recruiting. Enjoy!

Dario Frias is the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at UC-Santa Barbara. If there is a better collegiate assistant basketball coach in the country than Dario Frias, I would sign-up in a second to watch them work. Not only is Coach Frias a rising star on the collegiate women's basket circuit, but his coacheshangtime.com went viral during Covid and became THE place for high school and college coaches to share, learn and grow when we couldn't be on the floor with our kids. His episode with UConn's legendary Head Coach, Gino Auriemma is still talked about amongst coaches across the country.

In this week's Significant Coaching, you will be overwhelmed with golden nuggets of coaching knowledge. Coach Frias breaks down his amazing attention to detail and how he goes about scouting, recruiting, player development and more. If you are a President or an AD at a college or university, and this guy is not at the top of your short list for your future Head Coach, you may want to get out your eraser and pencil and add him to the list. He was a great high school head coach, a phenomenal assistant, and is well on his way to earning his first head job at the college level. Enjoy!

Dr. Ryan Dyer is the Director of Athletics and Assistant Principal at North Paulding High School in Dallas, GA and is one of my former players. He took over a high school program that had never experienced any type of winning, and he turned them into a consistent state tournament threat. He has since become a wonderful HS administrator who has become a role model for all high school athletic directors on how to promote, celebrate and motivate student-athletes, coaches and staff. He is one of the best at using social media in all the right ways.

Please check out his world-class podcast "Worth It". You can find his great guest list here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/worth-it/id1579238619

Marco Azurdia was named the Executive Director of the NWAC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) in 2012 after a decorated career as a Head Women's Basketball for 20+ years at Napa Valley Community College (CA) and Wenatchee Valley Community College (WA).

He walked away from his coaching career with 220 victories and seven 20-win seasons including one season where his team won a remarkable 29 games.

Before moving into his present leadership role, he was named the North Central Washington Female Team Coach of the Year and Female Team Coach of the Decade.

My conversation with Marco was a perfect example that you are never too old or too experienced to learn new things. I have learned a ton from him in a short amount of time. He is a wealth of information and our talk will definitely help many aspiring student-athletes and their families. Enjoy!
