Today’s guest is writer, speaker, and master storyteller, Tara Heaton. By applying over 25 years of corporate experience and almost 20 years of studying neuroscience, Tara created her platform TALK TO THE BRAIN. With her understanding of how our brains process information in today’s overstimulated world, Tara helps her clients tell better stories and communicate for greater impact. But in today’s conversation, we are going to talk about what inspired Tara’s study of neurology. In 2005, Tara’s 12-year-old daughter was struck with a rare virus. What ensued was a lifetime of seizures that have caused gradual and significant brain damage. January of next year will mark 20 years that Tara has been her daughter’s warrior, searching relentlessly to find a way to stop the seizures and restore her daughter’s life. This journey changed the trajectory of Tara’s family dynamics as well as the dream of the mother she wanted to be for her three children. Tara has never believed the old saying, everything happens for a reason. What she does believe is that we have the power to use the energy of heartache to create joy in the world. She promised her children that their suffering would not be wasted, that she would give it purpose. She keeps this promise by sharing their story, not only today with the Sideline Sisters, but through her TEDx Talk called Is Our Pleasure Killing Our Joy, and in her anticipated book, Life Minutes. Igniting Joy from the Fire of Heartache. Tara's Notes from the Sidelines: • We are a nation addicted to dopamine and the addiction is growing because the more stress, anxiety, and sh*t we face, the more our brain craves relief, reward, or escape, and the fastest way to get relief, reward, or escape is by getting dopamine. • Our brains produce oxytocin and anadamide, which minimize the dopamine craving and elevate joy. The best way to get them is through deep, rich, authentic connection. • Anadamide is the body's natural ability to make us happy with prolonged joy, unlike dopamine that's fleeting and requires more and more and more. Prolonged joy comes from nature, connection, and deep relationships, all of which elevate flow state. • Pain is undefeated. It will get us if we don't let it in. • Let yourself be seen. Stop pretending. You might lose some friends, but you'll see who the real ones are. • There's something under why people show up and act the way they do, so have compassion. • Be kind. • When pleasure stacking becomes so habitual that it's interfering with how we want to live our lives, it's a problem. • Don't try to just stop your addictive habits. Look for other habits that will fill you with flow state, anandamide, and oxytocin, that will naturally minimize the need for dopamine. • "If we can feel that heartache, then we have the power to repurpose it, put its energy out into the world." Jen Cannon, Marketing Manager at Harvard University School of Education, is my guest on today's episode. She is a great friend and tennis superfan. We talk about BNP Paribas Showdown, Laver Cup, Newport Hall of Fame Open, USTA League tennis, and so much more!
Jen's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. Hard work and consistency pay off and create champions.
  2. It is possible to come from obscurity and achieve greatness, as seen here.
  3. Don't be afraid to enjoy a cocktail with a friend on a tennis vacay, even if it does result in legal trouble.
  4. Even professionals want to quit the game after bad losses; some players have poor coping skills, too.
  5. Be sure to have at least one good friend to enjoy watching, talking to, and even playing sports with, especially tennis!

Check out the Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gael Monfils heated match at 2023's Laver Cup here.

Sideline Sisters - 7 - Laura Fox talks Kyrgios and Kardashians
play

01/31/24 • 45 min

Laura Fox is a content creator, influencer, and recreational tennis player from Charlotte, North Carolina.
Laura's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. Laura's content is relatable because, while she is usually quiet and respectful in real life, in her videos she is outspoken and has all the right comebacks at all the right times. (Where are all my kind, accommodating club players at?)
  2. Laura highly recommends attending the Taste of Tennis event at least once if you are a die-hard tennis fan; this festive event lets you eat, drink, and mingle right alongside the world's best tennis players.
  3. Laura admires Venus Williams above all other tennis players, because she fights hard and works to come back until the very end of a match, which is an example of a champion we can all appreciate.

We talked a lot about Nick Kyrgios and his antics on the court, as well as his public mental health struggles. Check out Nick and pray for his healthy return to the court.
Laura also shared details about how she works on her social media content, getting support from her teenage children. NeNe Leakes and the Kardashians provide ample humorous audio clips for her reels.
Follow Laura and check out her product reviews @thetennisfox on all social media platforms.

Elizabeth mom, wife, runner, and avid sports fan, especially when it comes to the Fighting Irish. We met on the local moms Facebook page for our town, and had a lively conversation about the Olympics, running, golf, Netflix shows, Riley Leonard, and so much more.
Note: if anyone has an extra ticket to the Masters Golf tournament, Elizabeth's husband, Chris, would appreciate the invitation, and would happily supply the beverages.
Links to all the fun stuff:
Riley Leonard's fantastic "suck" story
Netflix's Full Swing
Happy Gilmore
Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. Riley Leonard's mother kept his ego in check by telling him, "You suck," before each game. It was important to him that he not get consumed by the constant praise coming from outside sources and that he be driven by internal motivation.
  2. Elizabeth's family believes in supporting each other's athletic endeavors, so they show up and cheer for one another, whether it's races, gymnastics meets, or basketball games. Their philosophy is, "I watch you and cheer for you, so you do the same for me."
  3. It is important to choose a college with the right sports vibe, because each school is different and you want to make sure it's the proper fit for you.

Deb Carson is an award-winning multimedia personality, writer, producer, mentor, financial coach, mom, and now podcaster. Carson’s podcast, Powered by Purpose with Deb Carson, recently launched.

During her groundbreaking sports radio career, Deb anchored national sports reports and delivered breaking news during Fox Sports Radio’s hit shows, including The Dan Patrick Show, The Rich Eisen Show and many more. Carson also served as Co-Host of FSR's The Stephen A. Smith Show.

Deb has been a frequent sports contributor to a variety of media outlets including TMZ Live, Premiere Networks' America Now with Meghan McCain and America Now with Andy Dean, KFI's The Bill Handel Show and a multitude of sports and news stations across the country.

Deb’s broadcasting journey began at Baylor University. After graduating from Baylor, she moved to L.A. to join Merv Griffin Enterprises’ production staff on the hit game show Wheel of Fortune. Carson has since made a name for herself as a TV host, anchor, reporter, and actor. She has worked on a variety of news and entertainment projects behind and in front of the camera. Deb has had the pleasure of appearing in dozens of films and TV shows including Dexter, Lethal Weapon, Evan Almighty, Will and Grace, Ghost Whisperer, Desperate Housewives, The Practice, and many more.

Deb is also an advocate for pancreatic cancer awareness and research, and is a spokesperson and volunteer for various children’s organizations, including Boys & Girls Clubs, and Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles.
Deb's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. Be willing to go ask and try out. If you don't, you'll never have chances. Deb's advice is along the same lines as Wayne Gretzky's famous quote, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."
  2. Deb always hears NO as NOT YET. Maybe your plan is not the way you originally envisioned it, and that's ok.
  3. Always be prepared. Opportunities are constantly being presented; you don't want to miss them.
  4. Every time we turn on the news, there's negativity. But there is so much beauty in the world. Not everyone can go to medical school, become a doctor, and save lives, and that is why everyone can do kind things for each other and make that difference in the world.

Keri Cooper LCSW, NBCCH is a holistic psychotherapist for adolescents and children from New Jersey. She's an Eagles fan by marriage, a mother of four, and the author of Mental Health Uncensored: 10 Foundations Every Parent Needs to Know and Mental Health Uncensored Teen Workbook: 10 Foundations Every Teen Needs to Know.
Keri's Notes from the Sidelines:

  1. If you don't have foundations, you are never going to have great mental health.
  2. It's great to fill other people's buckets, but it is essential to find self-value from within. "If you fill your own bucket, no one can dump it out."
  3. Helicopter parents are too involved and don't give kids a chance to build themselves up.
  4. The solution for kids to build their self esteem up is for parents to stop keeping up with the Joneses and start saying NO to their children, put limits in place, which will allow the family to start having fun and enjoying life together as that family unit, which is really important.
  5. Reminder - social media isn't real.
  6. Lesson from covid - boredom is important. Boredom helps people, especially children and teens, figure out what they like and who they are as people, because being an athlete cannot be someone's entire identity.
  7. Meditation is anything that allows you to be in the moment.

Angela Fuller is a mother, a dedicated fitness instructor, a competitive gymnast, an inspirational speaker, and even an American Ninja Warrior, as featured on NBC's latest season of ANW this summer. Angela's journey is a testament to her resilience, having overcome a broken back and battled through postpartum depression by choosing faith over fear. Today, at the age of 43, she defies expectations, flipping and soaring through the air. Angela's true passion lies in motivating mothers to rediscover their love for movement and self-care after having children, emphasizing that self-care is indeed self-love, an essential part of nurturing both yourself and your kids. Her mission is to inspire mothers, demonstrating that it's never too late to pursue your dreams.
Angela's Note's from the Sidelines:

  1. "Winning is different for everyone. I won just being there. I held my towel with pride."
  2. Showing up and giving it your all is winning.
  3. Going out, giving it your all, having fun, and being proud of yourself are the messages we need to promote and repeat.
  4. You can't always choose the outcome, but you can choose your attitude.
  5. Angela recommends returning to your childhood sport as an adult. Her experience is that she does not need the validation she sought as a child. She is having much more fun and showing herself grace and gratitude for what her body can do.
  6. The number one lesson she is teaching her children as they participate in competitive sports is sportsmanship and to treat other athletes with kindness and dignity. Her hope is that youth sports begins to put more of a focus on sportsmanship and less on the podium and trophies. "The child that has severe anxiety shows up to that game and gives it all they can and didn't even want to go there. They won, too. And let's celebrate them."
  7. She is trying to create a movement that tells women there is no expiration date on their dreams.
  8. Her best advice to midlife women is:
  9. You can't win without failing.

Julia Nepini is a clinical and forensic social worker who owns the group practice, Compassionate Counseling Company, and the consulting business, Compassionate Consulting Company, where she helps entrepreneurs start, expand, and diversify their businesses. She also hosts the Compassionate Climb Podcast where she discusses being successful in business while maintaining integrity.

Julia's Notes from the Sidelines

  1. The alternative to spiritual bypassing is to be able to fully sit in good feelings and acknowledge how far we've come, and experience joy.
  2. Many people who grow up in chaotic homes learn to just be quiet, not ask for help, and do what they're supposed to do, thus becoming "the good girl."
  3. Podcasting offers an opportunity to reflect on successes and take credit for them.
  4. Know that you are not alone, and you have the capability within yourself to handle whatever comes your way.
  5. Know that whichever direction life goes, there's purpose and something to be learned.
  6. Lean into the discomfort of vulnerability. Make mistakes and own them. Share what you've learned throughout the process, because that's where real connection comes from.
  7. Let the minutia go and lean in to your unique gifts, and share them.
