If someone comes to me with a behaviour problem, one of the first questions I ask is “how much exercise does your dog get?”. There is often a definite link between the mental and physical stimulation a dog receives and the amount of trouble the dog gets into. Exercising your dog or puppy can be easy and done within your home.
The games I’m sharing are great ways to engage your dog’s brain and body if you can’t get out, or you have an injury that means you can’t go for your usual walks or outings with your dog.
In the episode you'll hear:
• Why dogs need exercise and how you can include this in daily life. • 20 easy games to play with your puppy or dog. • How to use what you have at home to engage your dog’s mind and body.

Today, we’re covering strategic approaches to help clear the path forward for you and your dog.
In the episode you'll hear:
• What mindset has to do with extreme dog training challenges. • About the more challenging dogs in my life. • How I transitioned dog training methods with my Border Collie, Buzz. • Why some dogs stop listening to their handlers. • My mindset approach for dog trainers, dog owners and dog sport competitors. • Point 1: Create love and connection for and with the dog. • Point 2: Adopt a positive mindset even if it feels awkward. • Point 3: Use a strategic dog training program that prioritizes the dog’s emotional wellbeing. • Point 4: Daily conversations with your dog that are positive. • Point 5: The 3 types of peer support groups. • Point 6: Cultivate resilience and self-belief. • Point 7: See beyond the “box.” • Point 8: Identify healthy emotional outlets. • Point 9: The answers exist, so ask better questions. • Point 10: Importance of self-awareness and self-talk. • That mindset is the make-or-break factor to realizing our dogs’ potential and our own.

As a professional dog trainer, I can assure you there are six words that your dog training coach never wants to hear. You might think those words are "but he does it at home," and that's close, but they are actually "tried that and it didn't work". We're covering what's going on with those words for you, your dog, and your coach and how to turn it around. Considering alternative dialogues promotes critical thinking and keeps communications open.
In the episode you'll hear:
• What to consider when your dog doesn't respond to training methods. • Why anyone can call themselves a professional dog trainer. • What Bob Bailey says about anyone being able to train anything given enough time. • That when you say, "it didn't work," you might be shaping your coach. • A better strategy that you can use to get great feedback. • That none of us know what our dogs are thinking. • Why you want a conversation based on intentionally clear statements and questions. • What tactics help if you are the coach hearing "it doesn't work". • Why dog trainers should consider their role and goal with students. • That we need to be more intentional about the action we are taking.

The idea of getting consent to train your dog is growing in popularity for a good reason. It is something I have been doing for many years. But consent is also misused, misunderstood, and misapplied, which can cause massive setbacks for dogs and their owners. So, what is consent really, and how does it benefit our dogs?
In the episode you'll hear:
• Where consent in animal training comes from and why cooperative care is important. • About the “game on” position that I use in my training. • The two categories of consent: general dog training and husbandry for health. • How my dogs show me I have their expressed consent. • What implied consent is and how dogs show you permission. • How our dog’s T.E.M.P. indicates their implied consent. • The category of substituted consent and what that means for our dog’s safety. • What manufactured consent is and why I don’t use it. • The reasons why a dog might say “no, thank you!”. • Why to pay attention to your dog’s emotions, eustress, and physical discomfort. • Where things go wrong when a dog says “no”. • Why we want to grow our dog’s comfort zone. • The importance of D.A.S.H. in dog training. • What to do when your dog says no and why we want to turn that to yes.

Dogs experience seven developmental periods, from puppyhood to adulthood, and it's important we understand each. I'm covering the stages, what they mean for our dog's emotional growth and how we can build skills and confidence for the dogs in our lives. Knowing your puppy's or dog's current stage helps overcome behavior difficulties and guides your training choices.
In the episode you'll hear:
• The four criteria for deeper insight into a dog’s development phases. • How expectations of ourselves and our dogs should be distinct. • The three culprits of ‘dog training gone wrong.’ • The critical importance of understanding a dog’s motivations. • Why the environment you’re training in always wins. • The difference between a willing dog vs. dogs being labelled as wilful. • That dogs are always doing the best they can. • Stage 1 Dog Development: Neonatal (co-regulation from mother) • Stage 2 Dog Development: Transitional (2-4 weeks old) • Stage 3 Dog Development: First Socialization Period (4-7 weeks old) • Stage 4 Dog Development: Second Socialization Period (8-12 weeks old) • How mother dogs discipline their puppies through play. • Why it’s best to keep puppies together for at least nine weeks. • That the first ‘puppy fear period’ may begin at 8 to 12 weeks. • Why relationship games for bonding are critical when a puppy comes home. • How a puppy temporarily attaches themselves in a new or overwhelming environment. • Stage 5 Dog Development: The Juvenile Period (3mos -6mos old) • The importance of managing environments as a puppy’s confidence, independence and curiosity grows. • Stage 6 Dog Development: Adolescence (6 - 18 months old) • That the more informed dog owners become, the smarter the dog becomes. • Stage 7 Dog Development: Maturity Period (18 months - 3 years old) • Why focusing on a dog’s emotional well-being is as important as tricks, sports, and behavior.

Inadvertent stress is something we want to minimize when training our dogs, as excessive stress has the same impact on dogs as it does on us. Now, stress is everywhere, but we don’t want to create it unintentionally and don’t want our dogs to endure anxiety if we can avoid it. We’re looking at how we can set up our training to prevent our dogs from stressing out.
In the episode you'll hear:
• How dogs can stress low or high and what that stress looks like. • That our human mechanics can reduce anxiety for dogs. • About practicing without your dog and how that will help minimize stress. • Why videoing will improve your training sessions and help your dog. • How I set up my training area and include stations. • That transitions are the gaps between the training, and we want them seamless. • What an efficient training session is and how to minimize your dog's repetitions. • About the importance of using Balance Breaks in your training sessions. • An answer to a listener's question about using food when training heeling.
