Sexy Ageing: Embracing Life beyond 40
As I come closer to 24 months of podcast episodes for Sexy Ageing, it feels like my list of questions are getting longer! one of the BIG questions is "How are women in other countries, cultures and belief systems managing their menopause?" A very general question that has a lot to unpack! In this episode, I'm starting with South Asian women and I interviewed Dr Shashi Prasad, an Indian Hindu national living and working in the UK. Dr Shashi is a very experienced GP, British Menopause Society accredited Advanced Menopause Specialist and Board- Certified Lifestyle Medicine Physician. She has worked in the NHS and privately for many years providing a high standard of care to her patients. During her work as a GP, she noted a huge unmet need for good quality menopause care. This motivated her to start her journey as a menopause specialist and complete her training from King’s College Hospital, one of the leading menopause centres in the UK. In this episode, we discuss: * Dr Shashi’s motivation to train as a menopause specialist * The differences for women in ethnic minorities accessing information, having conversation and support from their doctors. * Dr Shashi’s personal experience with menopause and the incidence of South Asian women seeking her help. * The higher risk of metabolic syndrome and diabetes in South Asian women and how menopause symptoms affect midlife health. * The complete lack of resources in Hindi language - is there a menopause symptom tracker for other languages? * The main menopause symptoms of South Asian women. I'm looking forward to speaking with more women on the topic of Race, Culture and Menopause for a more inclusive conversation. BODY: Surgical Menopause: a personal story

Emilie Joyal is a French Canadian living in New Zealand. Faced with a diagnosis for endometriosis and pre-cancerous cells on her ovaries, Emilie was advised to have a hysterectomy at 40. Emilie shares her experience and advice for women considering having a hysterectomy and we discuss, at length, the effects on woman’s hormones and the inevitable acceleration into menopause.
Emilie's experience was confusing and traumatic, as it often is for women when they don't have the full information they need to go through surgery, recover well and feel supported as they enter forced menopause. Emilie is the Founder of Surgical Menopause New Zealand and has set up a Facebook Community for other woman seeking evidence-based content and support.
