SelfKind with Erica Webb
11/15/23 • 58 min
Welcome to this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that’s me!) and my very special guest, Movement Educator and Author, Trina Altman.
In this episode Trina is sharing her evolution as both a mover and a movement professional. In particular, we talk about the central role strength training now plays for her as a mover and a teacher.
Tune in to hear:
- The transitions Trina has made from competitive cheerleading, to a corporate career, to becoming a yoga teacher in her thirties. It doesn’t stop there though - Trina goes on to share how multi-disciplinary movement has always been important to her, and how she weaves her various movement qualifications into her teaching now.
- How hypermobility impacted Trina’s exploration of movement as a mover and teacher.
- The value of taking an interdisciplinary approach to movement
- The role of personalised, individualised learning in movement and the value of the private session
- The role mental health therapy has played in Trina’s movement life
- And so much more.

Ep 166: Exercise gives movement a bad reputation
SelfKind with Erica Webb
08/17/22 • 27 min
Exercise. Love it? Loathe it? Either way, there's no denying that the cultural narrative around what exercise is and represents can have a big impact on how we think about ALL movement. But here's the thing: movement is more than exercise. It can be adjacent to and even overlapping with exercise, and it can be quite distinct from it too.
In this episode of SelfKind I'm chatting about:
> the differences (and similarities) between exercise and movement
> the role(s) of each
> the ways in which our ideas about exercise can give movement a bad reputation
> 6 ways that movement can have an impact that aren't tied up with a need to meet certain conditions or criteria.
If you've ever struggled to see a reason to move your body that DIDN'T relate to hitting the 'right' number of sets, reps, sweat, effort or outcomes ... this episode is for you.
(Oh, and it's worth pointing out that I love exercise. This isn't about demonising a wonderful thing. It's really more about considering how outdated and well-worn ideas might be impacting our joy).

Episode 28: Silence Equals Violence with Wendy Alexander
SelfKind with Erica Webb
07/01/20 • 63 min
This episode is a big one - and by that, I don't just mean that it's long. This one is big on importance. Today I'm talking with Wendy Alexander. Originally, when we made a time to chat together, we were going to talk about the role of freestyle African Dance, Yoga and Meditation in Wendy's life.
Instead, we decided to talk about Black Lives Matter and, in particular, Wendy's personal experiences growing up a black woman in Apartheid South Africa. Wendy now lives in Australia and we talk about her experiences here (and that of her daughter).
Wendy was generous enough to offer insight into how I and others like me (i.e. those with white privilege) can be better allies in the Black Lives Matter movement and some practical resources we can source.
This is big. It's important.
The resources Wendy mentioned during our chat (and some others she recommends) are listed below.
Books
Waking Up White - Debbie Irving
White Fragility - Robin DiAngelo
Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela
Talking to my Country - Stan Grant (this comments on race issues in Australia)
A Colour in my Pocket - Jane Elliott

Ep 218: Listening to your body for clues
SelfKind with Erica Webb
08/16/23 • 21 min
It's possible to change your relationship with your body and in this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!) we're talking about one piece of the how - listening to your body for clues.
This is about engaging in a compassionate dialogue with our bodies, moving away from blame and towards curiosity. By leaning into the power of observation and using our body's signals and feelings as crucial information, we can make more aligned decisions about how we engage in self-care.
In this episode you will hear:
- one way to start listening to the body's cues
- why considering what your body and brain need for security/safety is important
- how movement, environment, thought processes, and human connections can contribute to an overall sense of well-being
- how to navigate the complexities of self-care (because there's never only one right way)
- why acknowledging your experience is SO important.
Let's redefine self-care, one body signal at a time. Enjoy.

Ep 222: Rest, Ritual and Writing a New Story with Steph Le Gros
SelfKind with Erica Webb
09/13/23 • 49 min
Oooh, am I excited to share this conversation with you! I'm delighted to introduce the wonderful Steph Le Gros on today's episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!). This conversation is deeply relatable, hugely insightful and hopefully gives you space to contemplate the roles of people-pleasing, self-awareness and self-acceptance in your life.
In this episode, Steph is sharing pieces of her own story - and, ultimately, what led her to hit pause on her professional life over a year ago in order to devote herself to exploring rest, ritual, writing and rewriting the stories she had told herself over the past forty years.
I felt truly honoured to be in conversation with Steph and to hear her describe and articulate the inner experiences that led to this decision and how that year has unfolded. It's a deep privilege to share that with you.
In this episode you will hear:
- Why Steph feels she is writing a whole new book, not just a new chapter of her life.
- The transition Steph made from being a self-confessed people-pleaser to adopting a very different mindset that centres her needs, desires and unique self.
- The profound impact motherhood had on Steph's self-identity .
- Why choosing not to fit into anyone else's ideals was so liberating for Steph .
- The role of ritual and the significance of self-trust within the ritual space (plus the gift that is Cacao in Steph's life).
- The profound questions Steph uses to meet herself as she is each and every day and why they are so different to other approaches she has used in the past.
- The difference between choosing to resources yourself through self-care versus ticking self-care off the to-do list (and how to choose and commit to the former).
I hope you enjoy tuning into this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it!

Ep 174: How to step off the well-worn path
SelfKind with Erica Webb
10/12/22 • 22 min
Hello friends, and welcome to episode 174 of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!). In this episode we're continuing with our 4-part series all about Somatic Exercise: what is it and how and what does it help?
Missed last week's episode? Head there first (episode 173: Connecting with your Soma)!
In this second episode we're diving deep into the idea of Sensory Motor Amnesia or Movement Blindspots. What are they? Why do they matter? How can we shift them? And why would we even want to?
You'll hear:
> The analogy of the well-worn bush path and why we might sometimes want to explore the (metaphorical) wilderness
> how our brain and body are actually really clever to create these blindspots, but why we might want to consciously regain control of these subconscious movement patterns
> how recognising our physical blindspots can impact our capacity for self-awareness and self-kindness.

Ep 161: How to embody Gravitas with Amanda MacLean
SelfKind with Erica Webb
07/13/22 • 63 min
Welcome to this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb. I'm thrilled to be talking with Amanda MacLean today. Amanda has a business that works with CEOs in large corporations, preparing high potential women for a successful promotion. The women she works with have wonderful potential, but experience something holding themselves back. That thing is Gravitas.
Amanda explains this essence that is Gravitas and shares real examples of these human skills in practice. She also shares the many ways you can work with her including 1:1 mentoring, small group, larger workshops, all through the Gravitas Project.
In this episode, you'll hear:
—How Gravitas provides a person with human skills; behavioral flexibility with a sense of groundedness and assuredness.
—About the internal and external energies that influence verbal and non-verbal communication.
—Amanda’s family story and the journey into her own Gravitas.
—The 5 steps to preparing for a meeting using the Gravitas model.
—The sustainable stance and breathing to use in longer meetings or presentations.
—Simple and impactful changes you can make to have a larger impact in your communication.
Tune in to hear the full conversation and please connect with both Amanda and Erica to share your thoughts.
About Amanda:
Amanda is the creative force behind the Gravitas Project. She helps CEOs prepare high-potential women for successful promotion through her human skills development and mentoring programs.
Amanda believes women can make a significant difference in senior management, the boardroom and beyond. From understanding human skills to handling difficult conversations and people, Amanda works with women to make positive changes to both the work they do and how they do it, helping them to unlock their ‘gravitas’ along the way.
Amanda enjoyed a successful executive career herself, both in Australia and internationally. She knows how women can be heard at a senior level. Frequently the only female ‘at the table’, Amanda is seen as a role model for how women can lead with impact and confidence in their own way.
She talks about strength and kindliness – the kindest thing you can do for yourself in pressured, stressful or unchartered situations; when you need to step up and stand out; are to go for a swim or run or walk on the day; be mindful of your stance and bearing; practice your breathing; and leave your inner child (your imposter syndrome) on a chair outside of the meeting and collect her after the meeting and give her a hug.

Ep 136: Here I am AGAIN. But can that be a good thing?
SelfKind with Erica Webb
01/19/22 • 19 min
You know the feeling: you set out to finally nail that mindful movement habit or treat yourself with more kindness at last. But then ... you land back where you started and wonder 'how did I get here AGAIN?'
It's easy to simply assume we're not cut out for that new habit and throw it all out, only to lament 'I can never do xyz, it's just not who I am.'
Today, I want to offer a different perspective. What if that feeling of 'how did I get here AGAIN' is actually the perfect opportunity to pause and check in with what you need now?
This episode was inspired by Emilie Reid in conversation with the Movement Maestro on Episode 349 of Maestro on the Mic (thank you Emilie and Maestro!). Emilie talked about this feeling of being here AGAIN and how the 'again' part doesn't have to be a bad thing.
In today's episode of SelfKind I'm taking this idea and applying it to habit change - whether it be wanting more movement in your life or a shift in mindset to be kinder to yourself.
Join me to hear:
> why we so often land back in the same place, despite what feels like our best efforts to change
> why a moment of pause can be so powerful
> the difference between discomfort in the process of change versus punishing ourselves to be 'better'.
Enjoy, friends! And reach out with questions or comments - you know I love to hear from you!

Ep 198: Can organising your space be a form of self-care? With guest Virginia Wells
SelfKind with Erica Webb
03/15/23 • 55 min
Organising! This is one thing I do not consider myself the best at ... but my guest absolutely is! Today on SelfKind, I'm welcoming professional organiser Virginia Wells to chat with us about all things organising and decluttering. Specifically, we're diving into a conversation about how organising can be a form of self-care.
We touch on:
- why organising and decluttering isn't just about our physical space and belongings
- where to start if organising feels overwhelming
- the role of other tools - like Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in processing the emotional realities of sorting through our things
- the four types of clutter and what they represent
- plus so much more.
About Virginia:
Virginia Wells is a Professional Organiser who runs a business called WellSorted. She helps women who are feeling stressed and overwhelmed by the clutter in their homes and their schedule, to feel organised and in control, with her hands-on and virtual sessions.
Beyond the physical space, Virginia works with you to uncover and release your deeper habits, beliefs and emotions sitting under the out layer of clutter. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT or Tapping) is used to help release your emotional stuff. Virginia offers guidance, practical tips and time management options to create a less overwhelming way of living.
Virginia is also an author and the creator of the Decluttering Card Deck Set, which is a self-help tool to help you declutter at home on your own. It includes 2 decks of cards full of decluttering and organising challenges for you to work through on your own.

Ep 148: Getting closer to your discomfort to find sustainability in your movement and self-care practices
SelfKind with Erica Webb
04/13/22 • 22 min
Discomfort. We don't love it, do we? And it's fair enough that when we feel it, we try to get away from it as rapidly as possible.
But when it comes to creating sustainable movement and self-care practices that support us to feel good, how can getting CLOSER to our discomfort actually help?
That's exactly what we're talking about today on SelfKind with me, Erica Webb. When it comes to movement and self-care it can honestly feel like a relentless pursuit toward an ideal that we can never manage to achieve. But what if it could be simpler? And we could get there without the guilt and shame that are hallmarks of the all or nothing mindset?
Join me to hear:
> how getting closer to our discomfort can support us to see what's really going on, and what could be different
> why relying on guilt-tripping yourself or defaulting to 'I guess I'm just not cut out for it' is problematic and inconsistent with sustainable change.
