Clear & Concise Communication - Dave Weiner - Security Download - Episode # 002
02/24/23 • 60 min
Today’s guest is a veteran and former Chief of Police. He is a passionate and dedicated public safety and security management professional, and is a committed advocate for safety and mental health. Please welcome Dave Weiner to the show. Dave is the Founder & CEO of Secure Measures. Dave joins the host Anna Redmond to discuss Dave’s view on security administration and share what companies should be looking for when hiring security professionals.
Takeaways:
- A lot of security companies will promise all sorts of different things, so you have to be able to look past the pitch and do your research on the company. Make sure to take advantage of your network for honest feedback as they will tell you who you should interview and talk to.
- Security companies aren’t just another vendor. If you want to have a good working relationship with them and have everything run smoothly, then it’s important to make sure you are on the same page from when the contract is signed to when you are giving post orders.
- Post orders are essentially directives that guards or officers in the field are given that will tell them their activities and schedules for the day. If you aren’t providing the guards with the specific things they need to do, then nothing you are paying for will get done.
- When working with a security staff, there needs to be clear communication about if the security guards and officers will need to be trained in house or not. This will help to clear up any confusion and make sure that everyone knows what to do in certain situations.
- Security officers or guards should make sure that they are always being polite and respectful when dealing with other people. You can have that in your post orders that even if someone is on your property that the officer or guard should be respectful.
- Police officers are far better trained than your average security guard or officer, so there is a risk of liability when hiring a guard or officer. The solution to this is by making it clear that their job is to observe and report and not interfere unless absolutely necessary.
- OSHA’s General Duty Clause essentially states that all organizations need to protect their employees from any known hazards.
Quote of the Show:
3:44 if you're looking at them more of as a collaborative partner rather than as just a simple vendor, you're gonna get a lot further

Perfecting Private Security - Chris Hoyer - Security Download - Episode # 001
Welcome to the first episode of Security Download. In this podcast you will hear from experts in the field of security for both private and residential security, and learn all about the ins and outs of what it takes to keep people safe. Our host is Anna Redmond, the Founder at Braav. Anna sits down with today’s guest Chris Hoyer, the Instructor for Security Forces at BSIS as well as the author of When That Day Comes: Training for the Fight. After spending 20 years as a street cop, he used his experiences and chronicled his stories into his book and is here to share his views on what security companies need to do to make sure they are on top of their game.
Takeaways:
- In the security industry, there is a lack of awareness to some of the factors that go into making sure a guard is properly trained. This includes a thorough training process, a knowledge of what they have an authority to do and not to do, etc.
- Whoever is in charge of hiring a security company, that person should have a very detailed list of responsibilities that they want the security guard or company to take part in.
- When you hire someone to be a guard or an officer, they need to take the job and responsibilities seriously. They will be the first responders and people will see them in uniform and view them as a sense of authority and security.
- In terms of hiring a security officer, you want to make sure that they are properly trained to handle the mental, physical and emotional aspects of their job. They have to be prepared for the worst case scenario and be ready to handle that situation.
- A simple way to prove safety for someone is to offer to help them load or unload their car. This is something that can be easily done and provides an ease of mind for anyone that you are offering to help.
- Your appearance as a security officer matters. You never want your security officer to look sloppy as it gives off the appearance that they aren’t prepared and then they can’t be taken seriously.
- Not all confrontations need to end in violence for a security officer. You can deescalate the situation by choosing the right words and calming down the person involved in the situation.
Quote of the Show:
9:44 “You're not here just to stand on the side of the building and just hang around. You're here as a representative of your security company and for your clients.”

Trust but Verify - Steve Muntean - Security Download - Episode # 003
Today’s guest is leading the charge for innovation in the security services and property technology sector. He’s the author of Security Integrated Guarding: 21st Century Multi-family Housing and Commercial Real Estate Handbook. Please welcome to the show, Steve Muntean. Steve is the Chief Executive Officer at Overwatch Capital. He joins the host Anna Redmond to discuss what to look for in a security company and the best way to stay safe.
Takeaways:
- People that are hiring security professionals are often on a budget and instead of focusing on what their security challenges are they end up focusing on how they can get someone on a budget friendly option without considering the risks of that choice.
- When you are looking at hiring security professionals, make sure that the company who will be going with aligns with your goals and if they fit into the infrastructure you have in place.
- There are many different factors to consider when you are shopping for security options. Some good things to consider is how long the company has been in business, what the org chart looks like and who runs the company.
- A lot of times the business executives miss the strain that is being placed on first responders right now and they expect a certain level of work that might not be achievable right now.
- Software as a Service is growing significantly to help support security centric organizations. With technology constantly evolving, there is now GPS tracking and time and attendance tracking which can help to improve the reports for security.
- If you pick the right company for your security needs and you are deploying them for the right reason, then the value of your asset will increase and it can reduce your insurance premiums.
- When it comes to working with a security vendor, you want to have trust that your vendor is saying and doing the right thing, but you also need a way to verify that. This can be done through nightly reports or scanning QR codes for someone to log in.
Quote of the Show:
21:07 “What do you ask questions to make sure you're getting a successful security company? For me it's really having an executive team and a management team to cover your blind spots.”
