Second Serve Podcast is the only tennis podcast created exclusively for adult recreational players by everyday tennis players. We are passionate about the game and our episodes are geared towards adults playing a sport in the later years of life (hence, the name “Second Serve”). The goal of the podcast is to promote and grow the game of tennis for adult players. This podcast discusses everything related to adult recreational tennis. Topics include the following: advice for beginners; what adult recreational players wear; funny and crazy situations that happen on the court; the rules of adult tennis; and how it feels being an adult and getting your feelings hurt when you are not played in an important match. We know how it feels! If you would like to see pictures of our guests or listen to any of our previous episodes, please visit our website https://secondservepodcast.com. You can search for any topic that you're interested in and find an episode about it. We also have information about ratings, rules, tennis gear and more on our "Resources" page. Thanks so much for listening!

Why is tennis different from other sports? Why can't you cheer when your opponent double faults?
In this episode we discuss some of the tennis etiquette involved in calling the score, making out calls, hitting the balls at your opponent, and when you can and can't cheer.
Thanks very much to Tammie from Colorado and Lyn from California for the tennis etiquette questions!

Is it different captaining mixed doubles? What questions should you ask the players on the team?
In this episode Kelly joins us to discuss the differences in captaining 7.0 mixed doubles and why she enjoys it. She also gives advice to other people captaining mixed doubles for the first time.
Kelly has played for 9 years, is a 3.0 tennis player, and has captained numerous mixed doubles and women's teams. She ran cross country in college but believes being a runner is very different than an athlete who plays a ball sport!

Is it ever too late to start playing adult recreational tennis?
We really enjoyed speaking with Stephanie about her decision to start at 56 years old!
Stephanie is a 2.5 and likes to play/hit/drill everyday for at least an hour but preferably two. She has three adult children (one of which played tennis in college). She describes herself as an introvert and that going out to play tennis for the first time with people she thought she had nothing in common with was not easy, but now she absolutely loves it and can finally play with her family!
She looks forward to playing tennis as long as she can for the challenge, the exercise and the friendships.

When can you call a let? Is there a difference if your opponent's hat falls off versus their shoe falling off or dropping their racquet?
Carolyn and Mike, who are both attorneys and 4.0 players, review the rules regarding lets listed in Friend At Court 2020 and discuss whether they make sense.

How do you choose a tennis partner? Should you have similar goals? Is it better to choose someone that is not exactly like you on the tennis court? Do you mind if your partner drinks beer during a match?
We are excited to have Dave and Tom discuss how they started playing together and give advice to beginners on choosing the right tennis partner!
They won the 2019 Men's 3.0 55+ NC State Championship and made it to the Southern Sectionals Semi Finals, and they didn't even start playing until they were in they fifties.
They have a great rule they use on the court that is definitely a good idea for players at our levels, and they are hilarious!

What does an adult league coordinator do? When should you contact an adult league coordinator? What happens when a complaint is filed?
We are very excited to have Janie join us! Janie is a 4.0 tennis player and has been a USTA Adult League Coordinator since 2016. She has played on several teams that have made it to states and was on a 7.5 combo team that won a State Championship and went on to compete in in a Sectionals tournament in Mobile, AL! Janie loves tennis and feels like the best part of playing is meeting so many great people.

Can playing adult recreational tennis help your health?
We really appreciate Nikki discussing how adult recreational tennis was beneficial for her health, and she even believes it helped save her life.
Nikki is a 4.0 who loves to play! She normally plays on 5-6 teams per season.
When she was 29 she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Over the next few years she was diagnosed with several other autoimmune disorders such as Lupus, Sjogren’s Syndrome and Hashimoto’s thyroid, and she was diagnosed with Lyme disease.
Even when she is pain she says she always feels better after she plays and it helps her both physically and mentally. If you have similar health issues and would like to talk with someone who has been through a similar situation you can contact Nikki at her email address (catloverd@att.net).
We love how grateful she is to be able to play, and it also made us realize that you never really know what someone is going through on the other side of the court.

What is the tennis etiquette before a match? What do you do when your ball rolls into another court?
In this episode we discuss the tennis etiquette involved prior to a match and when balls are rolling out of or onto your court from another court. One of the hosts even realized she was doing the wrong thing and they both believe a rule should be changed!
