About Time (2013)
Screen Riot
07/25/21 • 64 min
British writer-director Richard Curtis poses the question: how would you handle having the ability to go back in time? Obviously this question isn't anything new and we've seen it in countless other films. But, the sci-fi infused romance story that is "About Time" brings some new ideas and interesting predicaments to the table.
Even though the film is centered around the young couple, the true romance lies between the relationship of a father and son. As a matter of fact, bring a tissue for the film's third act.
The film is exquisitely crafted, though some moments it seems though it's perhaps too pleasant for its own good. In the end, what matters the most isn't the time-traveling superpower, but to celebrate life for its basic pleasures.

Inside Out (2015)
Screen Riot
10/09/21 • 63 min
When baby Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) is born to her loving parents, so are her emotion: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). The emotions live and work at Headquarters, the part of Riley's brain that experiences feelings and makes memories. The quintet helps Riley grow up to 11-years-old, but everything changes when Riley's father gets a new job and the family are forced to move to San Francisco. As Riley tries to cope with a new house, new school, and her parents' increased stress, so too do her emotions. Riley's feelings about her situation create catastrophic events in her mind. Can Joy and the other emotions get a grip and help keep Riley from falling to pieces?
Inside Out is a creative and refreshing animated film that is targeted toward children but has the heart and enough emotional string-pulling for adults of all ages. It avoids a lot of cliched visuals and storytelling beats that make even the best Pixar movies feel too alike one another.
It is the first (and maybe only) Pixar film to not have an antagonistic character. The script initially seems as if it's favoring Joy's choices in Riley's life, but we soon realize Sadness has just as much value to contribute. The filmmakers do a great job with how they present depression: so subtly but unmistakably that it never has to label it as depression.
- Release Year: 2015
- Genre: Animation
- Starring: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, and Lewis Black.
- Trailer
- Summary: After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
