In E5 Lauren and Jared agree to disagree! We say a Lovecraft Country last word (16:00), check to see if Justin Simien’s Bad Hair has split ends (43:00), touch on Netflix's remake of Lauren's favorite film Rebecca (1:21:16), break down the beauty that is Henry Selick’s Coraline (1:31:33), and for some reason this week Jared can not seem to correctly pronounce words to save his life!
At the last minute, corona forced our recording location to close! As we look for a new location to record bear with us.
And Lauren made an oopsie. Gravity Falls is a Disney cartoon NOT a Cartoon Network cartoon. Follow the creator @_AlexHirsch.

Buggin' - Mimic (1997) ft. Sasha Banks
ScaryCrit: A Black Horror Podcast
04/14/22 • 95 min
It's weird science.
Sasha Banks joins Lauren and Jared on the pod this week to talk about a late 90's gem, Mimic. There was a lot of drama behind the scenes of del Toro's commissioned film. Even though he was Bill Gunn-ed in the end, there is still a lot to look at in Mimic. We discuss classicism, access, and how we determine value in this week's crit.

The Ravenous Feminine - Jennifer's Body (2009)
ScaryCrit: A Black Horror Podcast
09/30/21 • 115 min
Hope y'all have an appetite because we've got quite a meaty episode for ya! This week on ScaryCrit, Lauren and Jared first flip open the Negronomicon to coverages of some notable passings in the entertainment sphere, a certain Netflix show that completely upended our (and the world's) weekend and the very important IATSE strike.
Afterwards, we took a visit back to high school for the comedy-drama horror cult classic, Jennifer's Body (2009). From Diablo Cody's insanely quotable and classic screenplay, toxic co-dependency, some academic resources and the fact that this movie was a giant table-flip on the male gaze, there's a lot to gain sustenance from here. We hope you enjoy!

And Then There Was Static - Werewolves Within (2021)
ScaryCrit: A Black Horror Podcast
09/23/21 • 73 min
Y'all know we love a good whodunit!
In E34, your hosts Jared and Lauren crack open the Negronomicon to talk about the fiasco that was the Emmys and a remake no one asked for before they get into the 2021 release Werewolves Within, a uniquely hilarious horror-comedy take on the which-one-of-us-isn't-like-the-other genre. From the way the film uses archetypes to its advantage, the rapid-fire humor, Finn's interesting characterization and the question of "What is considered horror?" being raised, there's a lot to ponder with a film that critics have called "Clue with werewolves."
