Episode 133: Podcaster/Writer Prince Jackson and Candyman (1992)
Scarred For Life
05/16/22 • 97 min
This week, we finally sit down with Prince Jackson, the co-host of the Knight Light: A Horror Movie Podcast and an aspiring screenwriter. We talk about his life growing up with an older sibling who'd torture him with movies, his revenge on his brother, his time learning to be a mortician, the last film that truly scared him and his creative endeavors. And then we say his name five times and summon Candyman (1992)! We talk about its problematic history, the real life events it was partially based on, why it terrified Prince (And Terry's friend Amy), the impeccable score and so much more as we dissect the film and sing praises for Nia DaCosta's sequel.
During the episode, we mention the real life event that somewhat inspired the film and you can read the indepth report of "They Came in Through the Bathroom Mirror" here.

This week we chat with Chris Vander Kaay about his new movie .ask, which is streaming on POV Horror. For transparency, .ask is a film that Mary Beth helped produce. We chat about making the film to prove that you can make a movie for very little money, the way he used what was available to him to support the filmmaking process and more. Then we discuss Chris's relationship to horror, how he got introduced to it, what scared him and finally why Cloak & Dagger terrified him growing up. We discuss Tom Holland's effect on a number of our guests, the Hitchcockian nature of the film, kids in danger and Terry has a realization.
If you haven't seen Cloak & Dagger, do yourself a favor and watch it before listening. It's a fantastic and surprising film
You can watch .ask on POV Horror here. More places to come. You can follow Chris on Bluesky.

Episode 144: Writer/Director Addison Heimann and Scream 2 (1997)
Scarred For Life
08/01/22 • 79 min
This week we chat with Addison Heimann! He's the writer/director behind the queer horror film Hypochondriac, which is currently in theaters and will be on VOD on August 5th. We chat about his childhood watching horror TV shows and how he finally got into horror movies, as well as his relationship to the genre growing up. Then we talk about mental health and breakdowns and how Hypochondriac pulls from very real and very personal situations.
Then we dig into a classic, Scream 2. We discuss when we all first saw it, why it was so terrifying for Addison growing up and why it has resonated so much. We dig into the operatic nature of the film, the way it's one of our favorites but requires the first one, the deaths, the tragedy, Derek's singing, the over-the-top theater department, the set pieces...so much.
Follow Addison on Instagram. And check out Hypochondriac if it's playing near you and you feel safe to do so. Otherwise, please support the movie on August 5th on VOD!

This week we're so incredibly thrilled to chat with writer, director, festival programmer, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies and otherwise multi-hyphenate Kier-La Janisse! Her debut feature as a director, the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, premiered last year at SXSW and is currently on Shudder. Her book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with a newly updated edition that's available through Fab Press as a signed copy with a bonus CD right now and will also be available through regular bookstores starting tomorrow!
We chat about her relationship to horror, her introduction to the genre as well as her writing and the Miskatonic Institute before digging into the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase film Foul Play. And while this is one of those nontraditional choices, her Scarred for Life story is one for the ages. We use that as a jumping off point to discuss the wild film.
