Saints In the South - 2 Nephi 20-25, "We Rejoice in Christ"
play

From Come Follow Me:
"The writings of Isaiah include strong warnings, but they also offer hope and joy. This is one reason Nephi included them in his record: “I write some of the words of Isaiah,” he said, “that whoso ... shall see these words may lift up their hearts and rejoice” (2 Nephi 11:8). In a sense, the invitation to read Isaiah’s writings is an invitation to rejoice. You can take delight, as Nephi did, in Isaiah’s prophecies about the gathering of Israel, the coming of the Messiah, and the peace promised to the righteous. You can rejoice to live in the prophesied day when the Lord has “set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel” (2 Nephi 21:12). When you thirst after righteousness, you can “with joy ... draw water out of the wells of salvation” (2 Nephi 22:3). In other words, you can “rejoice in Christ” (2 Nephi 25:26)."

From Come Follow Me:
"The Nephites considered Nephi their “great protector” (see Jacob 1:10). He had also protected them against spiritual dangers, warning them against sin and urging them to come unto Christ. Now that task fell to Jacob, whom Nephi had consecrated to be a priest and teacher (see Jacob 1:18). Jacob felt a responsibility to boldly warn those who were “beginning to labor in sin” while also comforting “the wounded soul” of those who had been hurt by the sins of others (see Jacob 2:5–9). How would he do both? He would point them to Jesus Christ—because both groups needed the Savior’s healing (see Jacob 4). Like the message of Nephi before him, Jacob’s testimony was a call to “be reconciled unto [God] through the atonement of Christ” (Jacob 4:11)."

Join us this week as we discuss the continued difficulties the saints had of building up the church. All while having to move, purchase new lands and re establish themselves time and time and again. The early saints were challenged physically and spiritually to build of God's Kingdom here on the earth. From Bishop Edward Partridge, Leman Copley, Sidney Gilbert, to Newel Knight, W.W. Phelps, Ezra Thayre, and Thomas B. Marsh. All of these men were faced with their own challenges as The Lord looked for each mean to use their talents, means, and time to build up the Kingdom of God on earth. We find that some were willing to do anything that was required of them while others, although having a willing mind and heart, lacked the courage to fulfill their duties. Let's see what we can learn from these early saints and how we can apply it to our lives. The road traveled is not an easy one.

Saying it and Living it, are two different things. It's really easy to say "nothing is too hard for The Lord" but when you have to put that into practice at a critical time in your life, that's where the rubber meets the road.
Join us this week as we discuss the trials of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, Ishmael, and Isaac. We look at how we can apply their life struggles to our life struggles. The Lord knows each of us, he knows our temptations and trials. What will we learn from those trials.
Finally, we discuss the Abrahamic test. What might have been going through Abraham's mind or Isaac's mind as they traveled to a place to offer up a sacrifice. Do we all have to experience some type of Abrahamic test? Will they be on the same level? If one person is not tested as another, does that person qualify for the same blessings of Heaven.
We try to offer some answers to these questions as we discuss this weeks come follow me lesson.
From Come Follow Me Manual:
Abraham’s life, filled with events both heartbreaking and heartwarming, is evidence of a truth Abraham learned in a vision—that we are on earth to be proven, “to see if [we] will do all things whatsoever the Lord [our] God shall command” (Abraham 3:25). Would Abraham himself prove faithful? Would he continue to have faith in God’s promise of a large posterity, even when he and Sarah were still childless in their old age? And once Isaac was born, would Abraham’s faith endure the unthinkable—a command to sacrifice the very son through whom God had promised to fulfill that covenant? Abraham did prove faithful. Abraham trusted God, and God trusted Abraham. In Genesis 18–23, we find stories from the lives of Abraham and others that can prompt us to think about our own ability to believe God’s promises, to flee wickedness and never look back, and to trust God regardless of the sacrifice.

Chapters 28 and 32 of Genesis tell of two spiritual experiences that the prophet Jacob had. Both happened in the wilderness but under very different circumstances. In the first experience, Jacob was traveling to his mother’s homeland to find a wife and, along the way, spent the night on a pillow of stones. He may not have expected to find the Lord in such a desolate place, but God revealed Himself to Jacob in a life-changing dream, and Jacob declared, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I knew it not” (Genesis 28:16). Years later, Jacob found himself in the wilderness again. This time, he was on his way back to Canaan, facing a potentially deadly reunion with his angry brother, Esau. But Jacob knew that when he needed a blessing, he could seek the Lord, even in the wilderness (see Genesis 32).
You may find yourself in your own wilderness seeking a blessing from God. Maybe your wilderness is a difficult family relationship, such as Jacob had. Maybe you feel distant from God or feel that you need a blessing. Sometimes the blessing comes unexpectedly; other times it is preceded by a wrestle. Whatever your need, you can discover that even in your wilderness, “the Lord is in this place.”

Join us this week as we discuss Elijah the Prophet and his amazing faith, confidence, and ability to command the heavens!
From Come Follow Me:
The house of Israel was in disarray. The unity and prosperity achieved under David and Solomon were long past, and the nation’s covenant relationship with the Lord was, for many people, a distant memory. The Kingdom of Israel had divided, with ten tribes forming the Northern Kingdom of Israel and two tribes forming the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Both kingdoms were unstable spiritually, led by kings who violated their covenants with the Lord and influenced others to do likewise (see 1 Kings 11–16). But the apostasy was especially severe in the Northern Kingdom, where King Ahab encouraged Israel to worship the false god Baal.
It was in this setting that the prophet Elijah was called to preach. The account of his ministry makes clear that personal faith in the Lord can thrive among the righteous even in a wicked environment. Sometimes the Lord responds to such faith with impressive, public miracles, like fire falling from heaven. But He also works quiet, private miracles, like meeting the personal needs of a faithful widow and her son. And most often His miracles are so individual that they are known only to you—for example, when the Lord reveals Himself and His will through “a still small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).

From Come Follow Me:
"What would you do if you heard that a congregation of Saints in another area was struggling in poverty? This was the situation that Paul described to the Corinthian Saints in 2 Corinthians 8–9. He hoped to persuade the Corinthian Saints to donate some of their abundance to Saints in need. But beyond a request for donations, Paul’s words also contain profound truths about giving: “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). In our day, there are still Saints throughout the world who are in need of help. Sometimes the most we can do for them is to fast and donate fast offerings. In other cases, our giving can be more direct and personal. Whatever forms our sacrifices take, it’s worth examining our motivations for giving. Are our sacrifices expressions of love? After all, it’s love that makes a giver cheerful."

You do not want to miss this discussion!!
Heidi Simpson from Saints In The South sits down with some moms to discuss their true feelings of Mother's Day. As we look to celebrate our mothers this year in 2021, lets look a litter deeper into what it means to be a woman and a mother in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Heidi facilitates a wonderful discussion of the highs and the lows of the hardest job on the planet. It's 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365.25 days out of the year. They get one day to be celebrated. Do we ever do it justice. Do we every give the moms in our lives the credit they deserve.
How do moms really feel about mother's day? Is there pressure to live up to a certain standard of motherhood in the Gospel of Jesus Christ? What if you really don't want to be a mother but have to anyway? What if you really want to be a mother, but don't get to be?
Is there a Heavenly Mother? What is expected of me as a mother? How does knowing I have a mother in heaven help me? What if I'm not naturally maternal? What If I want to be a mother but can't. These are all questions that Heidi brings up in the discussion.
Join Heidi as she sits down with these sisters in the south to talk women, mothers, and the journey of it all.
