Ruth Millington's Extreme Holidays Podcast

When Ellis Charlesworth, an experienced sailor and former Royal Navy gunner, invited his brother for a sailing trip on his yacht, the last thing he expected was for their trip to end in disaster. Ellis discusses the role male pride and trust played in his fight to save him and his brother's life, the impact the disaster had on their relationship, and who ultimately was to blame. He also reads a poem from one of his poetry collections.

This week I’m delighted to be joined by Ellis for another episode of my Extreme Holidays Podcast.

Ellis was born in Sutton in Surrey, but now lives in the village of Barlow in Derbyshire. After school, he studied forestry which took him around Britain’s most finest parts. At the age of 21, he joined the Royal Navy sailing all around the world including to places such as Kenya and Venezuela.

Ellis is also a poet and writes poetry based on his life and work in the great outdoors. Ellis’s poetry collection, Country Ways Poetry Collection, is available on Kindle. In 1981, Gail Aldwin decided to travel on a double-decker bus from London to Kathmandu. Her overland trip took her across some of the most stunning scenery in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Fraught with challenges, Gail recounts tales of smuggling, breaking cultural sensitivities, and the heavy hand of the law. She also discusses how travel has changed over the last 40 years and shaped her life including her work as a writer.

The prolific Danish writer and poet, Peter H. Fogtdal, shares some of his extreme travel stories including contracting a deadly disease at a health spa in Thailand and nearly being kicked out of an ashram in South India!

How would you cope if you were involved in a horrific accident in the African bush, thousands of miles away from home?
In 2008, ex-City banker, Claudia Stachelhaus, upped sticks after being made redundant to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip across Namibia. On the second day of her adventure, the group tour bus she was travelling in overturned at high speed & Claudia was thrown out of the vehicle onto the dirt track & knocked unconscious. She woke to find herself screaming, having sustained a serious neck injury, but being out in the bush, help was hours away &, when an ambulance finally arrived, it ran out of petrol.
In this fascinating tale of survival, Claudia also reveals how her coping strategies & positive outlook on life set her on the road to recovery.
Claudia Stachelhaus was born in Germany & has lived in Australia & South Africa. For the last 15 years, she has been based in London. Since leaving her career in structured finance, Claudia has been hosting supper clubs, teaching cooking classes in the community & travelling as much as she can.
