Pastoring Rural Parents with Dr. Tedd Tripp!
Rural Church Renewal
11/11/19 • 69 min
In this episode we discuss...
- pastoring rural parents with our guest author, speaker, and pastor Dr. Tedd Tripp!
- We'll answer these questions:
- What do we need to know about the kids in our church before we can equip the parents in our churches to shepherd them well?
- What is the biggest mistake you see Christian parents making that they might not even be aware of?
- If a young pastor came to you and said, “Dr. Tripp, I’ve noticed that the children in our church are undisciplined. They can’t sit still. They don’t listen to their parents. They don’t respect their teachers.” And I don’t know what to do.” How would you counsel that pastor?
- One of the main arguments you make in the book is that our focus should be on changing hearts rather than behavior. Are you suggesting that we should not try to change the behavior of our children?
- Why would you encourage us to spank our children when a nice time out could get the job done and keep us in the good graces of society?
- How can we encourage the parents in our churches to see their children as a blessing?
- Is it wrong for us to discourage the parents in our churches from having their children so involved in these activities?
- We'll answer these questions:

Are You Afraid to Lead?
Rural Church Renewal
01/08/21 • 47 min
In this episode we discuss...
- our 5 points on how your church fits into the kingdom:
- Don’t be afraid to be an elder.
- God has established an office for the leadership of the Church.
- Ephesians 4:11-12; 1 Timothy 3; Titus 1
- As under-shepherds, Christ EXPECTS us to lead in the manner He has ordained. We are to teach and practice godly leadership in the church through eldership.
- God has established an office for the leadership of the Church.
- Don’t be afraid to accept things as they are on the way to where they should be.
- Examples of things that can frustrate:
- We have deacons, but I think we should have elders...
- We’re singing a bunch of songs with weak or poor theology...
- Our constitution really needs to be revised...
- We’re supporting 50 missionaries at $50/month...
- Examples of things that can frustrate:
- Don’t be afraid to speak the truth in love.
- Sometimes you have to say hard things from the pulpit, in a counseling session, in a public meeting, etc.
- Proverbs 27:5-6
- Don’t be afraid of Alexander the Coppersmith
- There are those who you don’t want to upset because their presence and influence can be destructive. Do not fear saying what God’s Word says no matter how they will react. The Lord will work it out!
- Don’t be afraid of hard work or failure.
- Often failure is the workroom God uses in our lives to reform us to be what we need to be in order to be more successful tools in his hands.
- Don’t be afraid to be an elder.

Our Quote of the Day:
- "There is much to learn about leadership from the life of Jesus-but the vision of leadership that we find in His Word is not likely to earn Him top billing on the leadership shelf in your local bookstore. The road to His kingdom did not, after all, land Him in an exquisite palace or an oak-paneled boardroom. It took Him to a cross-a throne of splintered wood, where His only robes were the flayed ribbons of His own flesh and where the scepter extending from His hand was not a polished staff but a bloodstained spike, Everyone who trusts in Him has been called to join Him in this suffering and to be united with Him in this death. For leaders in particular, the cross means that there is no depth of dereliction or sorrow to which we can be called where our King has not already been. 'The way of the Christian leaders is not the way of upward mobility in which our world has invested so much,' Henri J.M. Nouwen has reminded us, 'but the way of downward mobility ending on the cross.' That is the path of the one who leads as a follower of the God who goes before us." - The God Who Goes Before You: Pastoral Leadership as Christ-Centered Followership

On Rural Mission & Church Planting
Rural Church Renewal
05/12/22 • 54 min
In this episode we discuss...
- missions and church planting in rural places
- Today we interview Will Basham, church planter and lead pastor of New Heights Church in West Virginia.
- Will answers questions like:
- What is a holler?
- Evangelism in rural places often looks like “tent revivals” and “altar calls.” What is your perspective on this practice? You mention in your book a more biblical altar call. What is that? Where do you wish altar calls were happening?
- “I truly believe that in order to reach a generation of disenchanted people, our discipleship will have to be deployed.” What does deployed discipleship look like?
- “When we create discipleship strategies that are designed for higher educated areas, we leave so many people out. And they’re not just dumb hillbillies.” Tell us about your model of Meet-Read-Pray!

Pastor, Are You Misusing Church Funds Unaware?
Rural Church Renewal
01/06/20 • 75 min
In this episode we discuss...
- responsible financial stewardship in the rural church!
- Fraud can happen without you knowing it!
- Most pastors and church leaders have NO intention of hurting the Church.
- We think there is a way that a lot of rural pastors are misusing church funds without even realizing it.
- Many rural pastors are overworked. Pastoral ministry is demanding.
- What if we told you that instead of being overworked and underpaid, you are actually overworking and overpaid?
- THEORY: Pastors should focus most of their time doing what only pastors can do!
- If you’re getting paid a pastors salary to create, print, and stuff the bulletins, or clean the sanctuary, or put lyrics into the computer, or check the mail and pay the bills - you are being overpaid!
- Now, we're not suggesting that any of those things are beneath you.
- But, as part of your regular routine, you should be spending the majority of your time doing the things that God has instructed, qualified, and called what ONLY elders or pastors can do.
- What does Scripture say?
- 1 Peter 5:2-3 (1-14)
- Acts 20:28
- 2 Timothy 4:2
- 1 Timothy 5:17
- Hebrews 13:17
- Ephesians 4:12
- Titus 1:9
- Acts 6:1-6
- Arguments against?
- We hardly have enough to pay our pastor as it is!
- Nobody is willing to help.
- I’m too busy to train anyone. It’s easier to just do all the work.
- The real problem.
- Pride in doing a ton.
- More comfortable doing things they can see making an instant impact.
- Haven’t thought carefully about what Scripture calls to do.
- Too proud to ask for help.
- Trying to please men instead of God.
- Don’t know what to do.
- What can you do?
- Pray
- Repent if necessary.
- Log your hours.
- Make a list: what can someone else do?
- Make a job description.
- Talk to your leaders.
- Talk to the congregation.
- Hire a non-paid admin assistant OR
- since a laborer is worth his wages, trim the budget somewhere else, or start a small savings line item to hire a very part-time person to do some of the basics.
- Have a bigger vision for the position than what you can hire. Start small, but build in ways for it to grow.
- Fraud can happen without you knowing it!

3 Reasons Grace Stories are Vital to the Life of Your Church
Rural Church Renewal
06/24/19 • 77 min
In this episode we discuss...
- 3 reasons grace stories are vital to the life of your church!
- What is a grace story?
- It is a story of how the Lord has saved you by His grace
- What is a grace story?
- Why should I share my grace story? 3 Reasons!!!
- They’re seen in Scripture
- They’re an encouragement in the Church
- They’re an example to the lost
- When should I share my grace story?
- Anytime the Lord gives you the opportunity to speak the gospel to someone through how He has personally saved you
- MyCircle Training
The listener question we answer this week:
- Jeremiah from Catawissa, PA asks, “Hello Brothers, I have a question regarding why God's Family Fellowship and Wellsboro Bible Church exist as separate churches. What doctrinal differences do you divide along? If there are no first- or second- order theological differences, could you more effectively minister to your small town community by either combining, or working together and dividing evenly along geographic lines as autonomous congregations with a shared vision to better focus your circles of influence? I would love to hear your thoughts on whether rural churches could more effectively reach their communities with less fragmentation.”

Who's Eating Your Lunch?
Rural Church Renewal
05/01/20 • 53 min
In this episode we discuss...
- are the demands placed on you and your schedule eating your lunch? If so, it’s time to take them back!
- 4 Ways Ministry Can Eat Your Lunch:
- You are unorganized.
- You allow the choices of others to control you.
- We're not saying we don’t sacrifice to help others.
- We're not saying we only help those who have done everything right.
- We are saying that you should not create an environment where people rely on you for things they should not be relying on others for like:
- Sharing the gospel with a friend who expressed interest.
- Being their regular ride to church.
- Calling you with daily concerns that should be going to the LORD.
- Doing all the eldering, etc.
- Being a people pleaser.
- Doing instead of equipping.
- 3 Ways to Avoid Having Your Lunch Eaten:
- Romans 12:1-2
- Renew your mind!
- Ephesians 4:12
- Equip the SAINTS for the work of ministry!
- 1 Corinthians 2:2-3
- Know nothing except Christ and Him crucified!
- Romans 12:1-2

Are YOU Equipped for Rural Ministry?
Rural Church Renewal
04/24/20 • 57 min
In this episode we discuss...
- an answer to Matt Gileskie's mail questions:
- Are there other evangelical authorities to EQUIP people like me who aspire to pastor in rural areas?
- First goal: Do what God has called elders to do! Be shooting at the right target.
- Colossians 3:2.
- Second goal: Get practical advice!
- As much as we want a magic bullet or book, I don’t think anything could EQUIP you for rural ministry more than a spiritually mature rural pastor to disciple you and share his experiences, mistakes, and victories.
- Ephesians 4.
- Helpful rural specific resources:
- David Pinckney (Episode 51) A29 Rural collective
- Stephen Witmer's Big Gospel in Small Places
- Rural Matters Institute.
- Humility, patience, gentleness, long-suffering and a desire for unity.
- First goal: Do what God has called elders to do! Be shooting at the right target.
- Is it the responsibility of rural pastors to promote distinctively rural cultural engagement and reflection?
- Nope. It’s the responsibility of rural pastors to promote the Gospel AND the same scriptural ministry practices and principles that apply to any setting or people.
- Galatians 3:28-4:6.
- BUT it is our responsibility to share effective ways to effectively communicate that truth and wield those practices in the setting we know the most about.
- Every building has the same foundation, whether it is a log cabin or a McMansion.
- Nope. It’s the responsibility of rural pastors to promote the Gospel AND the same scriptural ministry practices and principles that apply to any setting or people.
- Do you think that rural pastors should follow Keller’s lead while reflecting on a different cultural venue?
- There were general principles that made a lot of sense to me and were convicting and encouraging!
- But it is hard for him to relate to us as rural pastors because he simply is not one.
- Does Rural Pastors Talk aspire to equip rural pastors in this way (in addition to general training for ministry)?
- If you look back at some of the examples of the big truths that we constantly pound, you will see broad ministry concepts that should be applied in every ministry context.
- At the same time we add the context of what this looks like in rural ministry
- Are there other evangelical authorities to EQUIP people like me who aspire to pastor in rural areas?
