The Reporter, The Priest, and Knute Rockne
Round the Bend Now and Then
06/30/24 • 45 min
On January 7, 1933, almost two years after the tragic death of legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne, A Detroit Evening Times headline read: “Bomb Killed Rockne, Put in Plane by Gang”
A few years ago, retired journalist Jeff Harrell saw that shocking headline and curiosity got the best of him so he dug deeper. He found archived newspaper articles, official reports, interviews and more that backed up the theory that Rockne's plane was bombed. He compiled all of this research and wrote a captivating book that tells the story behind the plane's tragic crash: As God's Witness: The Death of Knute Rockne.
In short, a Notre Dame priest witnessed one of Al Capone's hitmen murder a Chicago Tribune street reporter. He received several threats from Capone's men before taking the witness stand and soon after testifying, he gave his plane ticket to Knute Rockne whose plane crashed three days later.
In this episode, I meet with author Jeff Harrell to hear all about the story behind his book. As I say in the episode, it's such an engaging book that is hard to put down!
Be sure to check out Jeff's website and purchase his book: https://www.spiritofknute.com/

A Real South Bend Scoundrel
Round the Bend Now and Then
07/31/24 • 68 min
In this episode, I meet with Greta Fisher, the author of the book So Much Bad in the Best of Us - The Salacious and Audacious Life of John W. Talbot
All I can say is, John W. Talbot is one of the shadiest individuals that I have ever learned about... and most of his shenanigans went down RIGHT here in South Bend, IN from the late 1800s until the 1930s!
Greta Fisher's wonderful true crime book details the wild life of John W. Talbot, a man who would let nothing get in his way of money & power. Every chapter of her book contains one head shaking story after another detailing one illegal activity after another. What is now a parking garage at the corner of Colfax and Main St. in downtown South Bend, was once the center of Talbot's illegal empire.
Be sure to purchase, read, and let me know what you think of Greta's book! Click here: https://gretafisher.com/

In this episode, I meet with author Todd Tucker and we discuss the story behind his amazing book, “Notre Dame vs The Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defied the KKK”
Learn all about the wild clash between University of Notre Dame students and members of the Ku Klux Klan that occurred in downtown South Bend, Indiana in May of 1924.
In the book, Todd does an absolute wonderful job of, not only telling the story of the actual riot, but also providing readers with great historical context behind the history of the University of Notre Dame as well as the Ku Klux Klan. He shares how their separate but unique histories led up to the 1924 clash in Downtown South Bend, right on the corner of Michigan and Wayne St.

Settled on the Field

In this episode, I meet with the hosts of the Settled on the Field podcast: Liz Krueper, Jeb McNally, and Bill Krueper. They are all South Bend products and proud graduates of John Adams High School. As you’ll hear in the episode, they’re all sports nuts who decided to formalize their sports fandom by establishing a podcast. Their listeners learn about a variety of relevant sports related topics as they interview referees, coaches, current athletes, former athletes, to name a few.
As you'll also hear, they started a non-profit organization, Vets 2 Refs, that helps United States veterans and/or first responders become licensed sports officials. They help offset the start up cost for obtaining officiating licenses, equipment, etc. Click below for more information and to help support!
I definitely encourage you to check out the Settled on the Field podcast! It’s easy to find on YouTube, Spotify, Apple or just click on the link below. Yours truly has even appeared as a guest on their podcast... and had a blast doing it!

The Lake
Round the Bend Now and Then
10/01/23 • 43 min
“The Lake” is a nickname for the LaSalle Park neighborhood on the far West Side of South Bend, IN. The history of the neighborhood and everything it has experienced are so unbelievable, the story simply must be told. Longtime city leader Lynn Coleman joins me and helps tell the neighborhood's story.
The neighborhood is situated near a city park called LaSalle Park. Within LaSalle park is a small body of water called, "Beck's Lake". Currently, the park looks just like any other city park with a playground, shelter, community center, etc. However, prior to the 1920s, Beck's Lake was a much larger lake ecosystem thriving with hunting, wildlife, fishing, etc. In the 1920s, the lake was drained for a sewer project, leaving the shallow marsh type area we see today. From the 1930s until the 1950s, it was an official city trash dump called Beck's Lake Dump. ALL types of unsafe, toxic materials and trash were deposited in the dump. After the dump officially closed, people continued illegally dumping here for years after that.
Even though there was a city dump nearby, houses were still built and a community formed. This community has had a positive impact on many South Bend residents, including Lynn Coleman.
In this episode, I meet with Lynn Coleman. Lynn is a lifelong South Bend resident, retired police officer, former assistant to the mayor, local leader, family man, and he owes ALL of that, to growing up on The Lake.

Mishawaka High School's Steele Stadium: From Great Depression to Tradition
Round the Bend Now and Then
08/27/23 • 60 min
In this episode, our listeners and I learn all about how a mid 1930s Great Depression era program created by President Roosevelt’s administration to provide jobs to the unemployed, was used to build a local high school football stadium that on Friday nights 80 plus years later still fills an entire residential neighborhood up with the sounds of a school band playing, helmets and pads crashing into each other, and rabid Mishawaka Cavemen fans cheering on their Maroon and White.
Mishawaka High School’s Steele Stadium is a prime historic example of exactly what the Great Depression era program titled, Works Progress Administration, or WPA for short, intended.
In Mishawaka historian Pete DeKever’s book titled: Hidden History of Mishawaka, there is a chapter within titled “Mishawaka’s Battleground: Celebrating the 80th Anniversary of Steele Stadium’s WPA Bleachers.” With football season on the horizon and the passion that I know the Mishawaka fans display, I knew that I wanted to share this story.
In this episode, I meet with Pete and we learn all about why Mishawaka High School’s Steele Stadium is so beloved by, literally, generations students, former players, and Mishawaka residents.
Listen to the episode first, then head to 121 S. Main St. in Mishawaka and check out the museum! All for the price of a pack of gum and a bag of chips!
Be sure to check out next week's episode as I meet with Mishawaka High School Head Football Coach Keith Kinder. We had great time meeting in his office, right in the bowels of historic Steele Stadium.

South Bend's Canal That Never Was: Coquillard's Folly
Round the Bend Now and Then
02/25/24 • 31 min
In South Bend's historic City Cemetery, there is a bridge that looks completely out of place and literally crosses over nothing. It crosses no stream, creek, or road -just a VERY old stone arch bridge.
Turns out it was one bridge of many, built in the 1830s, that was meant to cross a waterway. This waterway was to be called the Kankakee Mill Race. This mill race was meant to connect the St. Joseph River to the Kankakee River. The water from the mill race was meant to provide hydroelectric energy to the brand new city of South Bend and surrounding areas.
The Kankakee Mill Race was built by one of South Bend’s founding father’s, the very respected businessman & trader, Alexis Coquillard. It was a sure fire way for him and his many investors to harness the energy of the newly built waterway and sell it to industrial buildings and mills that would be built along the canal. The four mile canal stretched from the St. Joe River, near Memorial Hospital, to the far West Side of South Bend.
All was going to plan until the moment Alexis Coquillard realized that he and his investors lost everything on what would become known as "Coquillard's Folly."
In this episode, I meet with local historian and author Aaron Helman. Within Aaron's most recent book, Ride the Jack Rabbit: More of the People, Places, & Events That Make Michiana Fascinating, is a chapter that details "Coquillard's Folly." Aaron and I discuss that chapter and all of the WILD details surrounding the "The Dry Ditch and South Bend's Bridge to Nowhere."

The Murder of a South Bend Tavern Owner
Round the Bend Now and Then
05/12/24 • 48 min
In 1984, the sometimes controversial owner of the very popular 5 Point/Eddy St. Corby's Tavern was shot execution style in his York Rd. home - in the normally quiet Twyckenham Hills neighborhood. The bar's manager escaped alive, but was traumatized by being strapped to a chair with a pillow case over his head. For three years, the case went cold, until a WGN reporter tipped off the South Bend Police to a possible connection to the murder of a wealthy Chicago businessman.
The story surrounding his murder is a tangled web that connects police officers, bitter divorces, tax liens, missing persons, wills, and girlfriends.... among other layers.
In this episode, Dieudonné Bayingana joins to help tell the story of the Corby's Tavern murder. He recently wrote a wonderful narrative, "The Midwest Connection" detailing all of the twists & turns the story contains. He & brothers collaborate on a web site dedicated to the arts. https://www.thefamilypsm.com/
Be sure to check out his article & also all of the other music, videos, pictures, & reading content that their website contains!
"The Midwest Connection" article: https://www.thefamilypsm.com/post/midwest-vice
PLEASE NOTE... Obviously, murder is something that is beyond tragic, & we mean NO harm or disrespect to anyone involved in this story... we researched public news accounts & tried to share the story as respectfully as we could. Also, you’ll obviously hear the name “Corby’s” a lot throughout.... just remember: the Corby’s Tavern we speak of & the Corby’s Irish Pub we love now, are NOT the same bar at all.
