Ep. 028 Artist movies, Biographies and Documentaries
Rockstar Mentor

Fan Mail Friday
Episode 028
Renee from Aspen Colorado writes in and that she recently saw a wonderful art documentary on Alexander Calder. She loves our podcast, She asks me what artistic movies are my favorite and if I have any and if I would share those?
Thank you Renee for this for sharing this and I love this question! I have seen that Alexander Calder biography a number of years ago and it is truly spectacular I am a fan of his work and have been inspired by his talents as well. Well the answer to the question is a big giant yes, yes I do get inspired by biographies, documentaries, and films that feature artists and their journey through their life is an artist. Whether the movie is fiction, factual, inspirational or biographical I always learn something from these individuals that have pave the way for other artists in history.
I am also inspired by production companies like Pixar, Disney, Lucas films etc. because those stories and journeys, trials triumphs and failures have all resulted in a unique art form that everyone of all ages can truly appreciate.
There are a handful of films that I have found that feature artists and the story of their life and their work that has inspired me in one way shape or form.
Alrighty... in not in any particular order I'm going to start off with films that just come right to my mind that I have really enjoyed, These are films about the artist themselves or representation of an artist:
1.) The Girl with the Pearl Earring
2.) Frida the story of Frida Kahlo
3.) The Thomas Crown Affair
4.) Pollick about Jackson Pollock
5.) Bigeyes about Margaret Keane
6.) Basquiat
7.) Midnight in Paris,
8.) Women in Gold (not Women in Red as I said in the podcast)
.... and there are probably another 25 or so movies I could talk about....
Then there some movies that were off the beaten path that I'm not sure sure if they were big box office hits, but these are ones that come to mind and definitely worth a watch:
1.) Art School Confidential
2.) Chocolat
3.) June Bug
4.) The Best Offer
Now I know perhaps some of you will be writing to me saying "what about this movie and what about that movie", I try to answer all these questions as fresh as they come in and as swiftly and spontaneous as I can. I want to be able to answer these questions so that they are as organic as possible unless it's something I truly have to research this is the format of this Fan Mail Friday is to address questions as they would as a spontaneous response based on if we were sitting around the table talking. If I have more time this week I will certainly delve into other movies, but I just wanted to address some that off the top of my head I have seen, I have been inspired by them most of them I would say I've watched more than 3 or 4 times .... and if I'm channel surfing and I see one of these movies or other artistic movies I will stop and watch it no matter what seeing the movie is in. Ha ha!
Then there are the biographies, there are far too many biographies that I could mention right now that are awesome, I believe if you check on YouTube or even Google most famous artist you will find a biography or a show or movie that talks about that artis
Ep. 20 FMF Write a solid artist bio by Sonya Paz
Rockstar Mentor
08/05/16 • 9 min
Today’s Fan mail Friday question is from Cara from Ft Lauderale. She writes "Hi Sonya, I'm just getting started with my art business and I want to start applying to exhibits and shows. I don't know the first thing about writing a bio and would like to know what else do I need to put in there and what to include."
Excellent question from Cara, thank you so much for writing and asking. Believe it or not a lot of people write a bio and have no idea what to put in there so they either put two less information or far too much information.
Of course through my art career I have written have had several versions of my bio written and it certainly has evolved. What you need to really focus on is what are The essentials.
1), Influencers. Tell the reader who you are and what drives you as an artist.
2) Accomplishments, if you have exhibited in an exhibition or a group showing at a gallery or in an open studios format.
3) Public or published works note those as well, shout it out to the world!
4) Awards. if you have won awards for any your work, write it down and tell the story. People want to know what types of award you have been involved with, if you're a watercolor artist and have one something from your local watercolor Society or special group interest of ceramics and received an award for
5) Specific collector base. if you cater to a specific collector base, you can mention that as well. The point is to let folks know that you're out there in the community.
Your artist bio is a growing document if you have a website this is great because you can change your bio up pretty easily. If you are going to print this to include with other documentation that you provide to your collectors or handout it shows realize that it will evolve and change and for you may want to consider smaller print runs so that you can keep your bio current.
Don’t forget to add your contact info, studio address (if applicable) website, phone number and social networking links.
I am so glad that Cara asked this question, I do get this question asked often but certainly wanted to address this valued question here on the podcast so that others can benefit from it as well.
My Fan Mail Friday episodes are here every Friday to help benefit you as an artist and get your weekend started. Maybe you have projects coming up or an exhibit that you're going to be in and need an extra boost of confidence to have you Rock it for your exhibit!

Ep. 104: Competition, Collaboration and Character, no trophies please
Let me ask you, if you drank a weak cup of coffee that appeared less than stellar how would you feel? Would you give it a participation trophy and call it a day? Would you return it and know that there was potential there... somewhere? I know there is no loss for this cup of coffee and it can be better. Stronger, Bolder, Great,
This weeks show I am focusing on "Competition, Collaboration and Character, with no trophies please!"
I learned to "suck it up" when I was growing up to strive to be my best, to learn lessons based on my own failures, to know what it feels like to lose at things, to not getting that perfect job, to have the ability to build character without losing integrity. working hard for that promotion, being rewarded for my hard work, and achieving success....not because I just showed up.
I know this may be a hot topic for some and a "heck ya" moment for many others. I have two sons whom I taught to take pride in the work that they do and follow through with their projects and passions. There were no participation trophies in our house, you earned your way to achieve the reward and feeling accomplishment in that feat. (plus these PT's were relatively new on the scene and it wasn't bad that they thought participation trophies were dumb in the first place). My theory is that these started with a lonely trophy guy who had way too much inventory and wanted a clever way to re-market trophies and came up with this money making idea.
You might consider this the no trophy zone.....There is such an amazing feeling to have worked hard to accomplish something, whether its a sport, job, project, or business, maybe it's because I have been around and have worked in such strict work places and environments, when you didn't carry the load in your job, you knew it! When you had to shake the hands of the winners at a softball game when your team was the one that lost, you learned and dealt with the consequences. As far as I recall, we felt disappointed in the loss, but the takeaway was to work together as a team and practice to be better. To be great.
These skills and personal challenges are an important factor to build character and boost self respect so that you can sustain and be tough for all of the challenges that life will be throwing at you. Today's episode will be an honest and truth be told summary of how to toughen up and become resilient to these competitive and sometime ruthless encounters that we have to deal with in today's business and personal environments. Are you ready to knock it out of the park....? I am. Let's do this!

Ep. 089 Social Media Woes That Will Make You Tear Your Hair Out!
Just when you are all comfy in your Social Media zone, then BAM! You get hit with another algorithm change that will seriously affect the way you manage your business. Sure we all get into the groove where we are comfortable and have our routine, the phone is ringing, the email is chiming and life is good...... then, you get hit with
I did a lot of research on this subject and located a great blog that explained this in four part summary. this was written by Jen McDonnell of Reshift Media she wrote this blog and I found this to best explain what to do as a business and how best to prepare with the changes without panicking! The article is called "10 marketing Tips for Businesses to Capitalize on Facebook Newsfeed Changes".
I will admit that I am the first one to freak out, mainly because I spend so much time streamlining my processed and preparing the organization of my posts for social media. The part that is so frustrating for me is that I am an artist and I teach painting classes/events adn this takes so much away from the time I need to run my business ()which I do really well) so this just adds more to my already crazy schedule. I know deep down inside that this will be good (and expensive) for my biz, but ..... well... you know....

Ep. 086 Will Smith says "Fan Your Own Flame!" I'm also discussing the mask behind Imposter Syndrome!
I've said it before but Will Smith gets in your face to fan your own flame.
I have said it for years, to be your own cheerleader and self promote to your hearts content... to not take anyones crap and to persevere and to march to your own drummer... with confidence.
However Will smith's recent rant on social media reinforces to all to not take anyones negativity and to surround yourself with positive people. People that will feed your ideas and not diss on them. Sometimes when this happens, this can lead to the imposter syndrome and the consequences that follow these feelings. As much as I preach this simple logic to all artists and entrpreneurs and business people, Will seems to have a larger fan base than me, so I am sharing his video - Enjoy!

Ep. 025 Respect yourself and your customers
Rockstar Mentor

Respect yourself and your customers
This week we are taking about respect, this is the one thing some artists can loose along their journey, is to respect themselves, their art and in the end, their customers. Never take this stuff for granted or get cavalier in the process. As an artist building their art business or client base, this is important to keep humble and to respect the opportunity to showcase your work.
QUOTE from Henry Ford
"It is not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It is the customer who pays the wages."
You might be meeting people at a show that you're at an outdoor exhibit, a group gathering, museum show and the list goes on. It's always best to have somebody with you that can help fill the void if there are absences between folks approaching you, and I'll tell you that you're not the only one afraid out there, there are people that have come to see you who are equally intimidated and afraid to approach you. Find that happy medium and be there and take that leap to greet others and thank them for coming to your exhibit.
A lot of people have a fear that they are going to say the wrong thing or fumble up on words The truth of the matter is that these are your clients and customers and people who admire your work want to know you and talk to you, the real you.
Now there's a lot to be said about being humble and having respect for yourself and to have respect for your customers. I know a lot of us choke up when approached by a customer especially when the customer is approaching you so that they can let you know what wonderful art that you have and how it makes them feel. But you see them coming toward you and you start to feel panicky!
They don't want to talk to some made up version of yourself, they don't want to talk to someone that's going to be cavalier or snotty or arrogant. Or maybe they do.....and if that is you, great, but I can pretty much wager to say that most of the folks that are listening to this podcast want to learn how to approach and talk to customers with others.
Be comfortable and be you be 100% you. If your thing is to wear beat up jeans and a T-shirt and if that's you. then that's great. If you like to dress up in your thing is to wear a top hat or dress like a mortician, then if that's your thing then embrace if, this is what people what they want to know that you're 100% genuine, there's been a lot of other artists who have all of these gimmicks with their art and they try to pride themselves on being so different. In my opinion, there's a very small percentage of people that really gravitate toward that but I can tell you if you want to be successful selling your own work then be as authentic of version of yourself as possible.
Find that happy medium and be there and take that leap to greet others and thank them for attending your exhibit.
I have been doing this a long time, I owned my own art gallery for many many many years and there were times when a lot of familiar faces would come in but they would be often times a lot of new faces, your established customer base will totally understand if you need to break away and talk to others that are new to your work this is essential because you don't want to turn anyone off. I've been to enough art gatherings to where I am a fan of somebody's work and I found the artis
