#91: Bryce returns with another snack-sized episode from the 2023 Mobilize Recovery Conference, where he sat down with artist, author, and facilitator Rosi Greenberg. Bryce and Rosi recently discovered they have a unique trait in common: they both named their inner critic SAM. Tune into the episode to find out why it's valuable to name your negative inner voice and how you can start to heal it, and more:

  • How giving the acronym SSAM to his inner critic has helped Bryce establish space between him and those feelings.
  • The process of learning to confront your inner critic by articulating it. For Rosi, her tool is drawing. As for Bryce, he turns to music.
  • The beauty of the recovery community: part of our own recovery is reaching out and supporting others.
  • Questioning who do you see yourself as being? And constantly redefining that and growing.

To get in touch with Rosi and learn more about her book, check out her website www.lovethatmess.com

Rise Recover Live - Vic Vela: Stories Will Always Outlive the Disease

#89: This week we welcome Vic Vela, host of the Back from Broken Podcast and a fellow person in recovery. Vic decided to take the two things he had a lot of experience in and use them for the public good: a career of effectively telling stories through journalism and his struggles with addiction. Stories are the shortest path to connection and community. Through sharing these stories of struggles and triumph, we help each other, as there is not a single person who is not impacted by addiction one way or another. Tune into our conversation with Vic to hear his story of recovery and more, including:

  • The YouTube video that gave him the little nudge to ask for help.
  • The question that saved his life: Are you really going to wake up and go through this all again tomorrow?
  • How his childhood hero got to be one of the first guests on his podcast.
  • Letting go of control, and how addiction is like trying to be the captain of the Titanic.

To hear more from Vic, check out his podcast Back from Broken, a space that regularly showcases the courage it takes to come back.

#88: Bryce is back with more live coverage from the 2023 Mobilize Recovery Conference where he had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Stancil Tootle. Stancil is a person in long-term recovery who is blind and from a rural area in Georgia. He is a presenter at the Conference and speaks on the barriers to recovery for people who look like him, from both a racial and disability standpoint. Check out the episode to hear a discussion on access to treatment for folks with disabilities, bringing awareness within the recovery community, and more, including:

  • How the recovery community presents some of the same ableist mindsets as the general public, and how we can do better.
  • How organizations like The Phoenix can be more inclusive and ensure that folks with disabilities are not a second thought.
  • How there is stigma in the recovery community, but also a lot of stigma towards recovery within the disability community.
  • A perception shift: one of beauties of recovery is that you live long enough that you might end up needing some care . . . and you want to make sure the care is there when you do.

To connect with Stancil, check out the Facebook group Tuesdays with Tootle and check out his weekly Zoom meetings

#24: A dedicated volunteer & advocate, Faizah shares her deep insight into the treatment of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) within our healthcare system. Now a medical resident, she came across The Phoenix as a medical student, and experienced a life changing perspective shift that allowed her to confront her own biases and those held by the medical profession.
We hear about how an unexpected sense of belonging in the recovery community helped Faizah feel comfortable in her own skin. And we discuss the challenges faced by physicians and patients in the treatment of SUD, and the impact of meeting people exactly where they are- even if it's not on the path a doctor might have hoped for.
As we celebrate Faizah's story as a Phoenix volunteer, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank ALL volunteers, who are changing the world one outstretched hand at a time. Phoenix volunteers work tirelessly to end the stigma of addiction by sharing hope and resilience through community. Words cannot express our gratitude for who you are and all that you do.

#20: Award-winning author Thad Ziolkowski joins us on the podcast today to discuss the unexpected connections between surfing, addiction, and recovery. In a conversation ripe with metaphors, we hear about Thad's own story and complex relationship with the waves. In addition to the wisdom of his lived experience, Thad employs philosophy, spirituality, and science to better understand the mechanism of addiction.
This conversation takes us in directions you may not expect!

  • You'll hear about the "psychic surgery" that Thad performed to shift his relationship with substances.
  • Thad shares stories of his youthful snake hunting expeditions.
  • We discuss the concept of "intermittent reinforcement" as it relates to motivation and substance use.
  • And a dialog about how we each view and approach labels used in the recovery space.

Thad's most recent book, The Drop, is the featured read for virtual book club on The Phoenix Live Stream platform in November! Join us Wednesdays at 6pm EST, and enjoy a special appearance of the author himself for a live Q & A at the end of the month! Sign up on The Phoenix App or www.thephoenix.org.
Thad Ziolkowski is the author of Our Son the Arson, a collection of poems, the memoir On a Wave, which was a finalist for the PEN/Martha Albrand Award in 2003, and Wichita, a novel. His most recent book, The Drop, which explores the relationship between surfing and addiction, was published by HarperCollins in 2021. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Slate, Bookforum, Artforum, Travel & Leisure, Interview Magazine and Index. Rise Recover Live - Samantha Perkins: This Mom is Alive AF

#8: This week we are fortunate to sit down with mom, author, and TEDx speaker Samantha Perkins. In her blog and best selling book, "Alive AF - One Anxious Mom's Journey to Becoming Alcohol Free," Samantha shares the role alcohol played in her story of motherhood and mental health. In this episode we discuss "mommy wine culture," and the messages moms receive about drinking as a coping mechanism... and how parenting sober gives her the joy that alcohol had promised.
Samantha shares her process of becoming a writer and speaker following the identity crisis that came with making a choice to walk away from drinking culture. As someone without what may have appeared as a typical "drinking problem," Samantha forged her own path, found her own community, and created a life that she is fully present for. This conversation is full of gems for anyone seeking inspiration to live their fullest life- whether you are a mom or not. As Samantha says "You don't know what you don't know... just take the first step."

You can find inspiration and Samantha's Community on Instagram at @samanthaperkins_aliveaf , check out her TEDx talk here and grab her book; Alive AF: One Mom's Journey To Becoming Alcohol Free everywhere you buy books.

#2: This week Liz and Bryce sit down for a conversation exploring identity, their approaches to routines and life, and how non-linear this whole journey is. From working through anxiety to shaking up who we think we are, recovery gave both Liz and Bryce the space and time to evolve, question and grow. Check out the episode to dive into conversation on this and more, including:

  • Learning to enjoy the journey and not just focus on the end, something Liz is practicing while doing her graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.
  • Methods Liz has learned to harness control over her anxiety, and how if she knows what's coming she can help herself out of it.
  • How sobriety allowed Bryce to evolve into someone new and gave him space to have a lot of restarts and softness.
  • How non-linear the whole process is - and Bryce and Liz are perfect examples of this.
