In this fascinating interview with the incredible Dr. Joel Fuhrman, I loved seeing his face light up, after so many years into his career, when he talked about the lives he has, and continues to, change through his written and spoken word, and thanks to his Eat for Life Retreat Center.
Our conversation goes way beyond the scope of nutrition for individual health. We zoom out and look at the big picture in terms of the effects of nutrition on our society as a whole... Something we don’t talk about enough... which was the topic of Dr. Fuhrman’s books, Fast Food Genocide. We dive deep into how nutrition affects people mentally and emotionally, and how that may be a contributing factor to the hostile political climate in this country today.
Dr. Fuhrman shares his backstory, what motivated him to take the path of medicine, specializing in nutrition, and how he almost talked himself out of going to medical school.
He paints an inspiring picture of the Eat for Life retreat center and his home next door, and how he’s created a holistic space that allows people to adopt a healthy, whole foods, plant-based way of life that they’re able to sustain long after leaving the grounds.
Dr. Fuhrman also sets the record straight when it comes to largely misunderstood topics from oil, to claims that raw kale could harm the thyroid (hint: good news, I can keep eating kale for breakfast even though I have Hashimoto’s disease!).

There are multiple paths that we can choose to take when we are on the journey to living a more healthy lifestyle. Many of us look at running as a quick way to shed some pounds or improve our cardio, but running can provide so much more than just a fitness routine.
I had the pleasure of meeting with Robbie Balenger and discussing how running has impacted his life, taking him from an unhealthy lifestyle to a whole food, plant-based diet and supporting him through his run across the United States.
Throughout his training, he discovered that running starts as a physical game where conditioning your body becomes the first hurdle to jump, but after your body is in running shape — your mind is where the real work is done.
Running has opened the doors to self-reflection and mindfulness throughout Robbie's big-event runs that help bring him clarity and reduce his anxiety. As running continues to require him to push his body beyond the limits he previously thought possible, he is faced with letting go of negative self-talk and boosting his confidence for accomplishing new goals and bigger challenges.
Robbie compares his running events to experiences in life with the reminder that everything is temporary and that as long as you continue to push through and take one step at a time, you will eventually reach the finish line.

Religion, in its pure sense is to reconnect, in this sense, humankind to the transcendent. So I think it's actually a positive word, but you have to reclaim it, much like the LGBTQ plus community has taught us to reclaim the word queer, which can be a very positive word if understood correctly. So in that sense, I think veganism can be religious in that positive sense. But when religion becomes about erecting unnecessary walls and drawing lines with those walls regarding who is in and who is out, that's when it becomes problematic. -Stevan Mirkovich
