RetroTube - Children of the Stones (1977)
play

10/17/20 • 48 min

Happy day! We've found ourselves trapped in a spooky little village, unable to leave and with only Happy Ones for company (they're posting inspirational memes on Facebook again), and so to while away the day, it's time to inflict 1977's unsettling children's drama Children of the Stones onto Heather. But what will she make of the show's murky narrative, flared trousers and reluctance to mail anything to America?

To find out whether you're the kind of man she thinks you are, Margaret Smythe requests that you touch the stone, and then like, rate and subscribe to the podcast.

If you're brave enough to dance among the stones and become one of the Happy Ones, you can find the full list of Children of the Stones episodes right here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLWr85zWHuCuLlhD5oVRzFX9j90DWyUH8k

RetroTube - The Monkees - season 1 (1966)

Hey hey we're Adam and Heather

And people say we Adam and Heather around.

Leonard Nimoy has really become a Vulcan and Michael Nesmith has put his fist through a wall (and it coulda been your face), so it's time to pull on our green woollen hats and double-breasted red shirts and join the world's first manufactured boy band on their tartrazine-fuelled romp around the dispiriting mid-60s music industry. It's The Monkees!

But will Adam be nice about Heather's favourite band and TV show, or will he become a shirtless outcast wandering through the desert in search of a Coke machine, only to capture the entire Italian army, become sucked up into a giant vacuum cleaner, get rescued by mermaids, have a tour of a dangerous chemical plant, fight Sonny Liston, and end up right back inside the big black box?

Monkees is the craziest people.

RetroTube - Man In A Suitcase (1967)
play

03/05/21 • 51 min

It's time to hop on over to the TFI Friday studios for... gritty 1967 spy thriller, Man In A Suitcase. Adam and Heather take a trek through the darker and grimier corners of the swinging decade, and get involved in all sorts of espionage shenanigans and undercover jiggerypokery - meeting a very familiar drunken rogue and a very familiar double agent in the process.

But will Adam enjoy the show, or will he become distracted by a drunken Shaun Ryder, an ugly bloke and Ocean Colour Scene?

Philip Madoc asks if you could like, rate, review and subscribe to the podcast, and in the meantime your name will also go on the list. What is it?

RetroTube - Doctor Who: The Gunfighters (1966)

Well, a lookie-here, if it ain't that most disreputable gang in the whole of the west - the Retrotube Gang, come to shoot the marshal and his deputy full o' holes - with their verbal sparring, of course: there ain't no guns allowed on Retrotube Ranch. Why look, it's Ezekial Retrotube, Norton Retrotube, Clete Retrotube, ol' Gabriel Retrotube, Clayton Retrotube, Isaac Retrotube, Phileas Retrotube, Charlton Retrotube, little brother Seth Retrotube, Mad Merton Retrotube, and worst of all, Ma and Pa Retrotube, Heather and Adam.

But will they enjoy the most polarising episode of Doctor Who until Love + Monsters, or will they be stringing it up from a tree by sun-up (or mid-afternoon)? Maybe Nurse Gladys Emmanuel will have some thoughts on the matter...

RetroTube - Bonus: C90

Bonus: C90

RetroTube

play

Here's a little extra bonus thingy - not so much an actual episode, more supplementary material to go along with the chat with Peter Tunstall.

We touched upon the audio tapes that we used to record and post to each other throughout the 90s. If you were at all intrigued by the clips I included in the episode, or just enjoy the whole nostalgic 80s/90s tape cassette culture, I've put together a C90's worth of some of the highlights. It won't be everyone's cup of tea - or even their glass of warm cherryade - but I think there'll be people out there who might dig our hauntologically-inclined shenanigans.

Do give it a try, anyway. I think Peter is a really extraordinary writer, and we had a lot of fun making them and trying out new ideas back in the day.

Let us know what you think!

RetroTube - The Adventure Game - series 1 (1980)
play

04/21/21 • 50 min

Adam and Heather rambled on something rotten this week, so we've split their conversation about 1980s children's game show The Adventure Game into two parts - series 1 now, and series 2 next time if you're very good and eat up all your vegetables.

Moira Stuart is really a lizard person, and she has Heather, Adam and a random civilian trapped in a gloomy cave system, forcing them to complete impossibly convoluted puzzles for her own amusement... or is it all just a particularly baffling dream? And who keeps making that annoying honking sound?

But don't worry - a certain bearded intergalactic rascal is here in his 1980 trousers to save the day. Will Heather make it all the way through the episode without having one or more conniptions?

Robert Malos demands that you like, rate, review and subscribe to the podcast, and you'd better do what he says.

It's a bonus episode, because we can't leave well enough alone.

Ever wondered what that really odd animation was involving all sorts of insects and woodland creatures, set to a jaunty psychedelic rock song, which would occasionally crop up on TV in the 80s? In this rogue extra outing - it really is the last one for 2021 - Adam inflicts the 3-minute short upon Heather, and they manage to talk about it for over half an hour.

BONUS: Cardboard Cinema Club has been sitting around not doing much for a wee bit (due to Adam being too busy for two podcasts), so for a bit of a Halloween bonus, here's the very first episode for anyone who missed it.

In this exciting* first episode of Cardboard Cinema Club, Adam is joined by Alex Pearson to chat about the classic 1981 John Landis horror-comedy, An American Werewolf In London. A naked American man stole their balloons - and they never did get the £2 they were promised - but they've vowed to plough on regardless like the troupers they are.

RetroTube - The Sweeney (1978)
play

09/13/21 • 66 min

Donning their best Cockney accents, Adam and Heather are huddled in a chilly transport caff waiting to knock off a consignment of dodgy videos coming over from Rotterdam - old episodes of To The Manor Born and Larry Grayson's Generation Game, plus a cannister containing Marco Polo and episode 4 of The Tenth Planet.

But who's this doing 90 'cos they've got the word to go? It's Goodnight Mr Tom and Minder come to nick them, with bonus fisticuffs. Adam and Heather are going to get a right old hiding, the pair of rotters. And who can blame them?

But will Adam enjoy this grimiest of police procedurals, or will Heather be forced to fling him from a moving vehicle at the soonest opportunity?

RetroTube - The Adventure Game - series 2 (1981)
play

04/28/21 • 55 min

Part 2 of Adam and Heather's Adventure Game chinwag, in which they leave Paul and Robert far behind... but not Lesley. Oh no, not Lesley - it seems like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, but we get to see a whole other side of her in this episode. You thought Tina Heath getting pregnant was shocking? Think again.

Meanwhile, we meet Graeme Garden, Carol Chell and Stretched Adric for a journey through Series 2 Arg, and a very difference place it is too, with different Argonds. These furry tubes are much more threatening and snarly than the cuddly lizards of Series 1.

Find out whether Heather is able to recover from watching Paul Darrow AND Graeme Garden in the same sitting; and whether Adam will reach a point of nostalgia overload.

Gandor requests, sir and madam, that you like (12 drognas), rate (9 drognas), review (16 drognas) and subscribe to the podcast (5 drognas), thank you most kindly, if you'd just like to pop the money into the slot, the amounts are clearly marked.
