All of a sudden, whoa...there’s Beastman

Once upon a time, there was a movie that told a story. A story of a rather dumb truck driver and his much more capable friend and their search for love, truth, and not-dying in the underworld of Chinatown. It was beloved by many, but not all. Today, dear friend, you will hear those who love the movie, and those who do not, attempt to tell why they loved, or did not love, this tale as old as...the mid- to late-1980s.

Kyle: re maker’s mark episode 64, big trouble in little China.

Hello again, and welcome back to remaker mark. Here we are in our 64th episode part two, in fact, where we are continuing to discuss big trouble in little China with me as always are my friends.

Andy wicks, Andy, , speaking of a couple of things that were mentioned in the movie, how was that for a segue, uh, magic potion or six demon bag.

Editorial Note: As you can tell by the dated references in this episode (“Laura Dern is in the upcoming Star Wars movie”), this was recorded many moons ago, and certainly before the accusations of sexual assault came out against Kevin Spacey. We certainly do not condone or endorse said behavior, and are very much okay with striking that pick from the record. CONSIDER IT STRICKEN.

Welcome to Part 1 of our discussion of the appropriately portmanteau’ed 1992 cape-medy (caper-comedy) ‘Sneakers’. This crew was hackers before it was cool to be hackers...I guess... But for real, this is a definite favorite of the group, and it shows in this first half, where we tackle the unenviable task of recasting this particularly great ensemble.

It’s two-fer time in this Special Episode, where we tackle two topics in one go, recorded live at our yearly visit to Wicks/Miller Cottage this past August. First, we discuss ‘The Sore Thumb’ – movies where one casting choice sticks out like a, well, sore thumb, and makes you say whaaaaa? Second, we reveal our picks for ‘The Black Stain’, which is a truly terrible movie that sits among many other great movies in a well respected actor’s or actress’ body of work. Some of these are terrible in the best/worst way. Enjoy!

The Sore Thumb:

He must have the best agent in the world.

The Black Stain

They need their ‘Pulp Fiction’...their ‘The Wrestler’.

I would like to agree with Kyle, in that this movie made me uncomfortable.

For our third Hidden Gems film, things are going to get a wee bit sexy, and more than a wee bit uncomfortable, for we are discussing Bernardo Bertolucci’s 2003 homage to film and, ahem, familial love and welcoming, The Dreamers. Sacre bleu!

An epic sci-fi novel. A classic struggle of good versus evil, of the oppressed versus the powerful, of nature versus humanity, of David Lynch versus the studios. We give you Dune! Or, at least, our remake of the 1984 version directed by Lynch and widely panned as being A Bad Movie. Which is too bad, because the novel is really good, the story of how the movie ever got made in the first place is intriguing, and the 2021 version is a sight better than this. Still, we are placed here for one purpose, and that is to theoretically remake movies. And thus, we fulfill our purpose.
