When narcissistic, controlling people feel backed into a corner, meaning they’re exposed, challenged, or losing control, they tend to react with a range of defensive, aggressive, or manipulative behaviors. Their reactions stem from a fragile ego, a deep-seated fear of losing power, and an inability to process shame or vulnerability in a healthy way. Some of the most high-profile examples of this play out with celebrities who have controlling or narcissistic tendencies and can’t handle being held accountable.

We’re going to do something completely different today. I’m going to dive into three current and past celebrity cases: Ryan Reynolds’ role in the legal battle involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, Bill Cosby’s downfall, and Kevin Spacey’s courtroom drama, to examine exactly what people with narcissistic tendencies do when they’re backed into a corner. More importantly, we’ll discuss what you can learn from these situations when dealing with narcissistic, manipulative people in your own life.

Relationships Made Easy - 304. Three Holistic Approaches to Your Mental Health
play

09/30/24 • 49 min

Mental health issues come in all shapes and sizes, which means that mental health treatment needs to do the same. I’ve long been a fan of holistic approaches which take into account the treatment of the whole person, not just specific symptoms. Today, we’ll talk about three of my favorite approaches: biofeedback, yoga, and acupuncture. We’ll discuss how all three are excellent, proven approaches for mental health issues such as substance use disorder, OCD, PTSD, ADHD, anxiety, and depression and whether these treatments are right for you.

You messed up, or at least you think you did. Maybe it was a job you quit in the heat of the moment, not finishing your education ten years ago or cheating on your spouse. We can perceive big or little things as crimes that need to be punished in perpetuity. Many of us can easily forgive others, but when it comes to forgiving ourselves, we’re not so generous. But learning to forgive ourselves is crucial to creating balanced, healthy relationships with others as well as leading a life of serenity and satisfaction. Forgiving yourself won’t change your past, but it will absolutely make your future brighter. Today I’m covering my top five tips for forgiving yourself and letting go of guilt, shame and past regrets.

Relationships Made Easy - 273. Do the Love Languages Really Work?
play

02/06/24 • 34 min

With Valentine’s Day around the corner in about 30 countries around the world, I thought it would be an excellent time to talk about Gary Chapman’s love languages. Let me say first that I’m not a Gary Chapman hater, and I think the Love Languages quiz can be fun and a little informative. However, this is not a one-size-fits-all theory and I’ve definitely found times that it’s even been detrimental for my clients. Today I’m going to answer your burning questions about the five love languages. What are they exactly and do they really work? Is there any research to support Chapman’s theory? Is there something better you should be using to align your wants and needs with your partner? Stay tuned while I answer all that and more. ____________________________ Full blog and show notes: https://abbymedcalf.com/do-the-love-languages-really-work Grab my FREE Mindfulness Starter Kit: https://abbymedcalf.com/product/mindfulness-starter-kit/ Become masterful at creating and holding loving, healthy boundaries. The short answer is “yes,” but the real question is, “When should I listen to my relationship doubts and when should I ignore them?” Whether you’re deciding to move in together and having doubts, or you’ve been together for ten years and wondering if it’s time to go your separate ways, relationship doubts can crop up at any point in a relationship. So how do you separate normal doubts from an inner voice you should listen to? Today, I’m bringing you the top four questions you need to ask yourself (and answer, of course) to stop doubting and start being sure. ____________________________ Full blog and show notes: https://abbymedcalf.com/are-relationship-doubts-normal-four-questions-to-get-your-answer In my new book, Boundaries Made Easy I go deep into understanding your dealbreakers and knowing what your non-negotiable standards are so you can stop having doubts! Relationships Made Easy - 331. A New Mindset for Navigating Neurodiverse Relationships
play

04/21/25 • 37 min

If you’re in a relationship where one or both partners are on the autism spectrum, you’ve probably noticed that the usual relationship advice doesn’t quite work for you. You might have read articles, watched videos, or even talked to a therapist, but instead of feeling helpful, that advice often leaves you feeling more frustrated, disconnected, or misunderstood. Here’s why: you’re not just speaking different love languages; you’re coming from different neurological cultures. This isn’t about broken communication. It’s about translation. When you shift your mindset to view your relationship like a cross-cultural partnership, where both people bring strengths, challenges, and a completely valid worldview, you stop trying to fit into someone else’s mold and start building a relationship that actually works for you. Today we’ll explore what it really takes to make a neurodiverse relationship thrive, starting with letting go of neurotypical expectations and embracing a mindset of curiosity, patience, and collaboration.
