Before the national expansion of Pro Wrestling the business was split into many different regional promotions referred to as "the territories". Each territory competed within their own regional boundaries with unqiue wrestling stars, championship belts, and local TV. We talk the good old days from the territory era, from the AWA to JCP, New York to Los Angeles, Memphis to Mid-South, Portland to Florida, Stampede to Maple Leaf, Houston to Dallas, well... you get the point!

We kick off our next excursion on Regional Rasslin' as we dive into 1986 in Bill Watts' Universal Wrestling Federation (The UWF)! Host Ray Russell is joined by special guest Roman Gomez (previously of the Mid-Atlantic Championship Podcast) as they set the stage for 86 by looking back at all the stars, angles, and champions coming out of the Mid-South in 1985. "Hacksaw" Duggan, Ted Dibiase, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, "Mad Dog" Buzz Sawyer, Steve "Dr. Death" Williams, Butch Reed, Dick Murdoch, Dick Slater, "Hot Stuff" Eddie Gilbert, The Masked Superstar, NWA World Champion Ric Flair, and so many more! To quote the Cowboy... "LET'S HOOK'EM UP"!

SPECIAL NOTE: We originally had an interview scheduled to drop with former ROH Owner Cary Silkin as part of Episode #4 of Regional Rasslin', but after the untimely passing of Jay Briscoe we felt it would be in poor taste to post the interview this week. Our interview with Cary will now drop as part of Episode #5.

Regional Rasslin' - Territory Talk - Episode 5: Cary Silkin Talks WWWF & Capitol Wrestling (1966 - 1971)
play

02/16/23 • 71 min

This week the Regional Rasslin' Podcast welcomes the former Owner of Ring of Honor, and the First Ever ROH Hall Of Fame Legacy Award Recipient, Mr. CARY SILKIN. Cary puts his time as promoter aside to go back in time and talk growing up as a fan in hopes to preserve some wrestling history. Many of the topics discussed in this first episode of the "Silkin Series" include Cary's introduction to Pro Wrestling in 1966, his first attended wrestling show at Sunnyside Gardens in 1967, wrestling going "black" in the late 1960s, the impact of the Magazines, the TV format driving ticket sales, "Air-Conditioned" Buildings, the art of the Dark Match, the introduction to the wonderful world of UHF TV and the struggle of TV antennas, attending his first MSG card in 1971 headlined by WWWF Champ Pedro Morales vs. his favorite heel Fred Blassie, seeing blood on TV, New York "Blue Laws", Willie "GILLIE" Gilzenberg, the 1958 Riot with Dick the Bruiser, who was better Pedro Morales or Victor Rivera, keeping the Latino population happy, Tank Morgan drugging his opponents with LSD as a "RIB", the intriguing career of Arman Hussian, the success of Antonino Rocca & Miguel Perez, wrestling comes to Cary's hometown of Cranford NJ in 1970, attending Bruno Sammartino vs. Pedro Morales at Shea Stadium, early ladies wrestling in the U.S., Mickey the barber (that a**hole!), watching the Los Angeles and Florida territories on Spanish Channels, and envying Al Getz! Plus, other names discussed on the program include Bruno Sammartino, Pedro Morales, Baron Mikel Scicluna, Arnold Skaaland, Angelo Savoldi, Pete Sanchez, The Rugged Russians, Crusher Verdu, Gorilla Monsoon, Ivan Koloff, and more!

****** DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, there were connection issues during the final 15 minutes or so of the conversation and thus there are a few spotty points in the audio on Cary's end. While I'm big on quaity audio, this conversation was simply too important to edit out the final segment of the show!
