Hey everybody! Welcome back to Reel of Thieves, the show where we go over all the references, riffs and history of your favorite stuff and this week, we’re doing a tour in Nam with Apocalypse Now!
This is a loose adaptation of Heart of Darkness by Sir Joseph Conrad made by Francis Ford Coppola, one of the biggest names of the American New Wave. This was an artistic film movement attempting to replicate the French New Wave in the US. It’s typically known for lackadaisical structure, elements of Italian Neorealism mixed with Interpretive, improvisational, method-style acting and cinematography.
So while there is the spirit and some pieces of the Novella here, it is not the same kind of adaptation we analyzed last week. Which is exactly why I chose it.
We’ll go over the plot of both pieces, what I found to be interesting in the film, and go over some of the history behind the making of Apocalypse Now!

Maybe it feels like everything is a sequel, and that's because it kind of is. We're going to dive, HARD, into this subject. We go over different kinds of sequels, movies talking to other peoples in an attempt to be a sequel, the MCU, and go over just some of the franchises and movies we'll go over during this season of the show.
It's going to be a hell of a ride, with twists and turns and all the ways they both reignite a franchise and sometimes burn it to the ground. But hey, the party keeps going as long as we have the rights to these titles! LET'S GO!!

This week, we're going over a film that is close to my heart that is an unofficial adaptation of another film close to my heart, its A Fistful of Dollars, the famous adaptation of Yojimbo that never asked if it was okay until after it was released. We go over the similarities and some of the differences as well as one key theme that is completely lost in translation.
So let's ride off into the desert on a horse with no name! Don't be a troll, be an artist!

Ep. 9: The Tragedy of Macbeth
Reel of Thieves

Hey everybody, welcome to Reel of Thieves! Don't forget to rate and share with a friend if you like the show! It's the best way to support.
This week, we're diving into the realm of Shakespeare adaptations with the most recent, Joel Cohn's The Tragedy of Macbeth. I can't be happier that I chose it because it's absolutely incredible. Also, is seeing a film heavily influenced by German Expressionism and power-hungry rulers a sign of the times? Probably! Smoke 'em if you got 'em, boys, the night is dark and full of terrors.
We go over the behind-the-scenes documentary, introduce Computer as a permanent fixture of our show (you're welcome), shout out all our fans in Germany, and dive into the play and some major themes before wrapping it up with our week's assignment.
Art is the antidote to our ills. Let's get to it.

This week, we've got to go fast with Sonic The Hedgehog! Video Game adaptations have had a bad rap, but this one is actually pretty good. We go over the references and riffs in the film from both the games and other films. We even discuss some of my own attempts at video game adaptations at the end.
So strap in, kid, we're in for the fastest ride of our lives with Sonic here, on Reel of Thieves!

This is a movie about many things and there are so many moments of pure artistic symbolism reminiscent of the French New Wave. In this show, I'll go over some of the world building to hopefully get you somewhat better aquainted with things maybe not fully discussed in the film. Then, we'll go through some references and what he may have drawn from to bring his version of Frank Herbert's Manga Opus to life.
Sound good? Okay, awesome. Let's get started!

Episode 4: Are Adaptations Really THAT Bad?
Reel of Thieves
12/22/21 • 19 min

So why "back to film school?" Well, that's where you learn how masterful these kinds of projects can really be. But honestly everyone has had exposure to adaptations even in K-12 schooling. West Side Story? That's Romeo and Juliet! Gone with the Wind was a novel first! There's literally thousands upon thousands. Its quintessential knowledge for all art: It's all theft. That's what this show is all about at its core, so why not start at the heart of it all?
Thanks again for listening to this week's episode. Don't be a troll, BE AN ARTIST!
