House of The Dragon Episode 5 Review - The Green Wedding - #spoilers #WILD - Recap & Record Podcast

Returning to Runestone, Daemon murders his wife, Lady Rhea Royce. In the Driftmark, King Viserys arranges a marriage between Rhaenyra and Ser Laenor, mollifying Lord Corlys Velaryon. Rhaenyra understands Laenor's sexual orientation and proposes they perform their royal duties while having lovers. Before leaving King's Landing, Ser Otto warns Queen Alicent that if Rhaenyra becomes queen, Alicent's children will be considered a threat to the throne.

Alicent discretely questions Ser Criston about Rhaenyra and Daemon, only to learn Criston was the princess's lover. At a celebratory feast, Alicent enters the hall during the king's speech, purposefully wearing a green gown, House Hightower's signal color for a call to arms. Ser Gerold Royce claims Daemon murdered his cousin, Lady Rhea. Daemon denies it and demands his late wife's lands and wealth. Laenor's lover, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth surmises that Ser Criston loves Rhaenyra and smugly suggests they guard each other's secrets. Criston, conflicted over breaking his knightly vows, is infuriated and fatally beats Joffrey.

Laenor is openly devastated by Joffrey's death. Rhaenyra and Laenor are privately wed to avert further scandal; a frail Viserys collapses immediately after. As Criston is about to commit suicide over his misdeed, Alicent intervenes.
