Returning to Runestone, Daemon murders his wife, Lady Rhea Royce. In the Driftmark, King Viserys arranges a marriage between Rhaenyra and Ser Laenor, mollifying Lord Corlys Velaryon. Rhaenyra understands Laenor's sexual orientation and proposes they perform their royal duties while having lovers. Before leaving King's Landing, Ser Otto warns Queen Alicent that if Rhaenyra becomes queen, Alicent's children will be considered a threat to the throne.
Alicent discretely questions Ser Criston about Rhaenyra and Daemon, only to learn Criston was the princess's lover. At a celebratory feast, Alicent enters the hall during the king's speech, purposefully wearing a green gown, House Hightower's signal color for a call to arms. Ser Gerold Royce claims Daemon murdered his cousin, Lady Rhea. Daemon denies it and demands his late wife's lands and wealth. Laenor's lover, Ser Joffrey Lonmouth surmises that Ser Criston loves Rhaenyra and smugly suggests they guard each other's secrets. Criston, conflicted over breaking his knightly vows, is infuriated and fatally beats Joffrey.
Laenor is openly devastated by Joffrey's death. Rhaenyra and Laenor are privately wed to avert further scandal; a frail Viserys collapses immediately after. As Criston is about to commit suicide over his misdeed, Alicent intervenes.

3 RecommendationsRhaenyra travels to Storm's End, where, with Lord Boremund Baratheon's guidance, she meets and rejects countless suitors. She returns to King's Landing just as Prince Daemon arrives from the Stepstones on his dragon, Caraxes. Daemon says he was named "King of the Narrow Sea" but swears allegiance to King Viserys and, removing his crown, hands it to the king.
As the reunited brothers celebrate at a feast, Queen Alicent confides her loneliness to Rhaenyra, who misses their friendship. Late at night, Rhaenyra, disguised as a boy, sneaks out with Daemon to explore King's Landing; they drink, attend a bawdy play, and visit a brothel where Daemon seduces a willing Rhaenyra. Unable to become fully aroused with his niece, Daemon, agitated, abandons her there. Returning to the Red Keep, Rhaenyra seduces Ser Criston.
A spy informs Ser Otto about Daemon and Rhaenyra's exploits. Alicent overhears Ser Otto telling the king. She privately questions Rhaenyra, who denies having had sex with Daemon. The king angrily confronts Daemon, who seemingly confirms the accusations and proposes that he wed Rhaenyra. Viserys says Daemon only wants the marriage to gain the crown, then exiles his brother back to the Vale.
To avoid scandal, Viserys orders Rhaenyra to marry Ser Laenor Velaryon. The king dismisses Ser Otto as his Hand, feeling Otto has always manipulated him for his own personal gain. The king sends Grand Maester Mellos to give Rhaenyra a precautionary abortifacient tea.

Queen Alicent notes the infant's hair, like his brothers Jacaerys and Lucerys, is brown rather than Targaryen silver. She presses Viserys to declare them bastards with no succession rights, which he rejects. Ser Criston, now loyal to Alicent, goads Ser Harwin. Alicent scolds Aegon for pranking his brother, Aemond, then says he must prepare himself to fight for the throne. Daemon and Laena visit Essos with daughters Baela and Rhaena, where the Prince of Pentos offers them a lordship in exchange for an alliance against the Triarchy, which has reclaimed the Stepstones.
After agonizing labor, Laena, unable to give birth, commands her dragon Vhagar to incinerate her. To make peace, Rhaenyra proposes her son Jacaerys marry Princess Helaena, Alicent's daughter. Ser Lyonel Strong offers his resignation as Hand of the King over rumors regarding his son, Ser Harwin. King Viserys refuses, but allows him to briefly travel to Harrenhal with Harwin, who will remain there.
Ser Harwin's emotional farewell to Rhaenyra and her children implies he is their father. Alicent tells Larys Strong she wishes her father was still the king's Hand. At Harrenhal, Ser Lyonel and Harwin die in a fire, apparently orchestrated by Larys. Rhaenyra, Laenor and their children relocate to Dragonstone.
