Reboot Forward - Joanne Newborn - How to Stop Being a People Pleaser
play

03/18/21 • 36 min

Joanne Newborn is a Certified Lifestyle & Leadership Executive Coach with nearly 20 years of Corporate experience in Sales, Marketing & Management. She has her MBA from Penn State University and graduated with Beta Gamma Sigma Honors. She guides career focused individuals who feel frustrated, unfulfilled and stressed out to become empowered leaders so they can attain their dream job, with ideal salary and a luxurious (guilt-free) work/life balance.
According to Joanne Newborn here are a few steps to stop being a People Pleaser:

  • Observe and recognize this quality in yourself – without judgement. Just observe that this quality exists.
  • Take responsibility – take ownership of knowing this quality may be holding you back from making decisions as a leader vs. a follower.
  • Take action to make a change – start to make an uncomfortable decision. Step out of your “people pleasing” comfort zone and speak up for what you believe in, share your ideas, move forward in the face of that fear.

Reboot Forward - Colleen Preston - Finding an Oasis in PTSD
play

06/11/20 • 37 min

Colleen Preston has been a successful entrepreneur for over 25 years. She says her purpose in any business endeavour has always been to help others succeed.

Colleen started her first business as a computer instructor and authored many computer training manuals. She wrote Microsoft Certification courses as a contractor for many years until she changed careers after a horseback riding accident.

This accident led her to extensive physiotherapy where she began to take her hobby as a cyclist, runner and weight trainer to become a certified personal trainer and speaker. She opened her first gym in a garage and grew the business to 3 locations with 12 trainers and staff in the Tri-City area (Greater Vancouver, British Columbia).

As an entrepreneur she attributes good business with Community Service and great relationships with clients and community members.

Through tragic events during her ownership of fitness studios and overcoming massive obstacles, she added to her desire to help people by studying and authoring personal development courses for those who have experienced PTSD. With several workshops and her personal training business, she decided to find an “Oasis” where people could experience a holistic approach to improving health and wellness. She closed everything in 2012 and traveled until she found the perfect location.

Currently, she thoroughly enjoys her "Oasis" on the Sunshine Coast (a Ferry ride from Vancouver, British Columbia) where she is developing a retreat centre for Personal Development programs for Corporate or individuals seeking to rise to the next level in their lives.

In her writing career besides developing educational material, she is also the Nomination Policy Advisor for the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame to ensure a transparent and fair process to honour people who have dedicated their lives to the snowsport industry in Canada.

The principles she uses to guide her own life and business are easily transferred into assisting clients with their desired life by setting goals, action plans and motivating them to continue to success.

As a facilitator and trainer she takes the time to research and find out exactly what clients want and aims to deliver only the best.

Reboot Forward - Boundaries - Courage Confab with Dagmar Meachem
play

04/08/21 • 32 min

Why is it so hard to set boundaries? Oftentimes, it signifies a deeper value set.
Once you start establishing healthy boundaries, you can expect others to react negatively. This is a sign that the boundary is necessary and that it's working effectively. It's also helpful to visualize your boundaries getting crossed and imagine how you'll address those situations. That way, when a moment like that arises, you’ll be able to handle it rationally versus emotionally.
Employees who are the happiest and most productive are those who set boundaries. People who set limits gain respect because they show respect for themselves.
“Having the courage to set boundaries is about having the courage to love ourselves, even when we risk disappointing others. “ Brene Brown

Barry Forward suggests The Five Steps to Establishing Work Boundaries:

  1. Prioritize your values
  2. Communicate your boundaries clearly
  3. Bring up a boundary or violation right away
  4. Focus on concrete rather than personal explanations
  5. Be ready for boundary breaches - have a game plan

Dagmar Meachem on Boundaries:

  1. Trust your gut
  2. Be Courageous
  3. Take Personal Responsibility
  4. Explore Lack of Boundary Motivation
  5. Practice Reframing - to give you freedom to set the boundary
  6. Speak up - make choice to do something rather than be a victim

Dagmar Meachem is an accredited Professional Certified Coach by Erickson Coaching International, Professional Certified Coach (PCC) by the International Coaching Federation and is EQ-i 2.0 Certified. She provides one-one coaching, group coaching and custom designed facilitated workshops. Throughout her career, she’s also worked in the area of personal and business development, health coaching and website design.

Reboot Forward - Feedback - Courage Confab
play

02/11/21 • 36 min

Feedback. Leadership Coach Dagmar Meachem joins me for a Courage Confab discussion on Feedback. We look at creating a culture where feedback is welcomed, encouraged and trusted. How to give good balanced feedback and strategies to incorporate feedback as a leader.
Randall Stutman founder and co-head of the Leadership Practice the Admired Leadership Institute states that Balanced Feedback requires a person to give both positive and negative feedback in an equally vivid, elaborate, and detailed manner.
Radical Candor - 11 Ways to Get Feedback From Others:
Tip 1: Have a go-to question
A question like, “Is there anything I could do or stop doing that would make it easier to work with me?”
Tip 2: Embrace the discomfort
After asking for feedback, stop talking and “embrace the discomfort.” Count to 7 and commit to allowing the other person to speak first.
Tip 3: Listen with the intent to understand, not to respond
Don’t interrupt or argue when someone gives you feedback. Just listen, focus on understanding what the person is telling you, and try to learn something from it.
Tip 4: Reward criticism to get more of it
When someone provides feedback to you, treat it like a treasured gift!
Tip 5: Ask for public criticism
Another way to show that you appreciate the criticism you receive is to ask those who are most comfortable criticizing you to give the same feedback in front of others.
Tip 6: Criticize yourself in public
Criticizing yourself in public is a great way to show that you feel comfortable acknowledging that you aren’t perfect, that you have room for improvement.
Tip 7: Call out body language
Even if people aren’t telling you what they really think with their words, their body language may still be sending a more candid message.
Tip 8: Relish being wrong
Show people that you are happy when they prove you wrong.
Tip 9: Show that you care
When you show you care, you build a relationship and you build trust. People will stop seeing you as the “jerk in charge” and assuming the worst.
Tip 10: Don’t try to change your style
Figure out how to use your personal style, be it very vocal or very quiet, tough or gentle, approachable or intimidating, to invite criticism of yourself, to remind people that you want to be challenged.
Tip 11: Get theatrical
Sometimes you have to be really over the top to get feedback.
