Real Psych Talk03/22/23 • 50 min
Kristene Chapa is an assault survivor, disabilities rights advocate, and LGBTQ activist. In June of 2012 Kristene and her girlfriend Mollie Olgin were violently assaulted at gunpoint, shot execution style in the head, and left for dead. Their story made national news as they appeared to be a target of a hate crime. Mollie tragically died and while Kristene survived, she had to relearn to walk, talk, and eat. Kristene remains permanently disabled with limited vision, hearing loss, and is partially paralyzed on the left side of her body. In addition to her physical injuries, Kristene also continues to struggle with PTSD and anxiety. Against all odds, Kristene has continued to recover physically and emotionally along with the help of her family and her fiancé Alondra “Alo” Nevarez. Kristene is the subject of the 2022 documentary - Left for Dead: The Kristene Chapa Story and the forthcoming book - The Wind Blew Through Us: Love, Murder, and Justice in Texas.
