This episode takes a turn from our previous episode’s very specific topic. In episode 26, we discuss some lofty ideas concerning design sustainability in all matters (social, economic, environmental, etc.) as well as design altruism. We tackle three specific examples, including Cradle to Cradle, and two inventions that are helping developing nations and people. We go in-depth to discuss our consumption, poke fun at laptop stands, and try to begin to peel the bandaid to see how designers can help. We ask that you let us know too. At the end, we pose a few questions, and now more than ever, we’d love to hear from you. This is a big topic that, comparatively, the two of us know nothing about. The question, though, is pretty simple—how can we help? In addition, we’d love to have you, dear viewers, on the show. Send us an email. Let us know what times during the week you’re available. Maybe you’ll hear back and be invited on a future episode. Finally, we’d like to thank Jos for our acknowledgment in his recent Museo Slab spec book. You can check it out in the shownotes, and the face should be available soon. For more detailed shownotes visit http://rbtl.us/post/276326909

This week on the show we talk all about type on the web. We discuss recent developments like Typekit, Font Bureau’s Permission table, and Spiekermann’s new typeface Axel. We also talk a bit about our own idea for a non-profit type foundry, a foundry based on donations that commissions type designers to design web fonts we can release for free on the web. We’d love to hear your feedback about our non-profit type foundry idea. We’d also love to hear any news (or any corrections) about some of this new technology we’re talking about. This week on the show we begin a discussion on the topic of sustainable design. We talk about approaching sustainable or “green” design as a way of thinking, bucking the trend of just calling something “green,” and using this conversation as a jumping point for more efficient and effective design thinking. We’d love to hear your feedback, so reply to us on twitter @rbtlshow, email us at [email protected], or leave us a message at 646-402-5686 ext 20248. We want examples of great sustainable design, suggestions for designers we could have on the show that are doing great things for sustainable for design, or your thoughts on the topic. On this episode we discuss data visualization as the new path and frontier for graphic design, and how graphic design has treated communication of information in the past. We also discuss the definition of graphic design, focusing on Meggs’ quote, and specifically the idea of designers creating artifacts that document human experience. We unveil our final refined mark and discuss the process we took to get there, and finally we answer a question and review some previous discussions from our spec work episode, 15. As always, we ask for your comments and love hearing from you. Feel free to call, send in an mp3 or text comment to [email protected], or find us on twitter @rbtlshow. “the essence is to give order to information, form to ideas, expression and feeling to artifacts that document human experience.” - Phillip Meggs More detailed shownotes can be found at http://rbtl.us/post/108753901
