Our mission is to redefine the word "professionalism" by empowering communities to be their authentic selves. When we are told to be professional, in many ways we are told to not be ourselves. On this podcast, we have candid conversations and explore the conflict that we often face between being our authentic selves & "professionalism". The podcast is named ¿Quién Tú Eres? because that’s the question that we want each guest to answer. Listen to find out who we really are...when we stop code-switching. ¿Quién Tú Eres? - Unfiltered Rates with Odalys Jasmine and Pabel Martinez
play

12/13/22 • 52 min

During this episode, we are sharing the monthly live streamed conversation that we host on LinkedIn and YouTube.

You'll be hearing our observations and thoughts on all things Salary Transparency including the below

Let's keep it a buck, most companies are not in favor of Salary Transparency. If they were, then they wouldn't have waited for a Law to be passed. - That said...as of 11/1, the new Salary Transparency law is now active in NYC.
So far...I’m not seeing these ranges on the LinkedIn job posts...but I am seeing them on the company website though. Go on any company career page...search for a job that’s located in NYC...and you’ll see a range for the annual base salary.

During the episode, Odalys and Pabel will explore this and...
- What does all this mean for us?

How to have productive & healthy Salary transparency conversations

Personal experiences when these conversations have been awkward

What do we want to see companies do next?

"We all make choices, but in the end, our choices make us." — Ken Levine
Our families have sacrificed and worked too hard for us to not do well in life. It's pressure that we constantly feel and it impacts the daily decisions that we make. What is doing "well" though? Should we even be feeling this pressure?
This month's topic, Odalys and Pabel will be diving deep into decision making and the impact that recent decisions has had on our lives. Example questions and topics below.
- Did you ever regret any of your decisions, did it always open a new door etc.?

- Navigating the big decisions and the small ones throughout the day

play

03/12/24 • 45 min

Welcome to a brand new episode of the ¿Quién Tú Eres? podcast, where we explore the conflict we often face between "professionalism" & being our authentic selves. This week's guest is Pedro Fortunato.

As an American-Dominican born and raised in the melting pot of an environment that is New York City, Pedro Fortunato has been sonically influenced by many styles of music. The genre styles he chooses to interpret range from Bachata to Bolero, Merengue, Afro-Dominican Rhythms & their fusions, as well as hints of Rock, R&B, Jazz & Hip Hop.

With the experimentation of blending genres and pushing the boundaries of certain cultural musical norms, Pedro Fortunato manages to deliver a truly unique sonic experience in a contemporary fashion while highlighting his Dominican roots.

In this week’s episode, Pedro shares how he broke away from the expectations of his family and became a professional musician. Growing up, Pedro knew that he was the oddball of the family. He spent his days playing instruments and dreaming of a career in the music industry. But he knew his family did not approve, so he left home to learn by experience. He joined local Dominican bands and studied in conservatories to hone his craft. Now he’s a Spotify-verified artist with over 40,000 listens across the platform. Listen to hear more about his journey and how he found the courage to perform in front of thousands of fans.

¿Quién Tú Eres? - Not Today with Michael Lopez
play

08/17/22 • 45 min

Michael Lopez is a graphic designer whose work can be found at www.postlopez.com. Originally from San Diego, now living in Los Angeles with their cartoonist spouse Rachel Dukes and 2 cats. They are Chicanx and non-binary.

Michael Lopez also shared the below post on LinkedIn and it went viral. This is his first and only interview about the situation and we are proud that he decided to share his story on our platform.

I'm a queer brown person and I was fired during Pride month for speaking up in defense of abortion rights at Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) (a subsidiary of Universal Music Group).
Last Friday, like countless other folks, I was devastated by the news of the supreme court's attack on abortion rights. Paired with the flood of anti-queer and anti-trans legislation, it's been hard to process how company's expect us to be productive while our rights are being stripped away. Especially when our company has been donating to several of these politicians (link in comments).
Every Friday, one of my tasks was to process reports for upcoming releases. This is an email list that goes out to 275 people. I don't know who's on it, I just knew it was the email list with the most people that I had access to. So I sent the following message:
Subject line: UMe Schedules
Message:
I didn't do them today.
I'm in mourning due to the attack on people with uteruses in the US. Federally guaranteed access to abortion is gone.
Vivendi and Universal Music Group must stop donating to anti-abortion, anti-queer and anti-trans politicians. Politicians like Marsha Blackburn, Ken Buck, Victoria Spartz, etc. Or expect more unproductive days.
Yours in fury,
-Michael Lopez
The immediate aftermath was several supportive emails from other co-workers and a manager calling to tell me to take the rest of the day off. I appreciate the love from my coworkers, and I figured, based on management's response, there was a good possibility I might be fired as a result. But I was proud of letting allies know that our company has been donating to these politicians.
Around 9:30-ish today, I got a surprise Zoom video chat with HR. I was being let go for (paraphrasing) "Not doing your job, disrupting the day of 275 people and poor judgement." I was told to log out and that a courier would be there to pick up my laptop from my apartment within the hour.
Anticipating that I'd get shut out of my computer very soon, I sent a follow up to the email list:
Hey ya’ll,
Just got fired for this email from Friday, so they’re letting you know where they stand on employees speaking out on politicians that support marginalization for folks like me.
A brown queer person terminated during Pride month speaking in support of abortion rights. Seems like that’s exactly what America is all about right now.
Peace out,
-Michael Lopez
I don't speak for my former company. I speak for myself and employees that will suffer under these discriminatory laws.
Their actions today, their silence on Friday are indicative of their motivations. Profit at all costs. Solidarity, only if it's profitable. And above all of that is maintaining the status quo and saying fuck you to the working class.
