Education: Going to School or Learning to Learn? with Dr. Naomi Fisher, Ph.D.
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
12/03/21 • 43 min
We are taught that an education is a vital component of success. We define education as going to school. Whether through public schooling or the more expensive version of the same concept, private schooling, children are shepherded through a system that makes learning a 12 year long process of mastering how to follow the rules and perform for rewards.
On today’s Quantum Revolution episode, we’re talking to Naomi Fisher, a clinical psychologist, about her book, Changing Our Minds: How Children Can Take Control of Their Own Learning (https://www.amazon.com/Changing-Our-Minds-children-learning/dp/1472145518/)
According to Fisher, children today have easy access to an enormous amount of information, from all around the world. The news is not hidden from them and much of the news is not reassuring.
In addition, most of them spend their days in an environment which makes very specific competitive requirements of them, and over which they have almost no power. When they refuse to cooperate with this, they are said to be suffering from school refusal, or perhaps school phobia. This is often thought of as an irrational anxiety, a bit like being scared of spiders. But is it irrational to refuse to go to school? Instead of assuming that distressed children must be disordered, let’s think about whether school is an environment in which all children can thrive.
About 33% of children in the school system manage to do well. Some even thrive. But what about the other 66%? Even more frightening, approximately 30% of children in the United States have been diagnosed - and some are even medicated for - having learning problems. Have we really bought into the idea that only 33% of us are smart and capable of success? Could 30% of children be incapable of learning or be somehow educationally “broken” and often in need of medication to make them compliant?
Dr. Fisher in her book, Changing Our Minds brings together research, theory and practice on learning. It includes interviews with influential thinkers in the field of self-directed education and examples from families alongside practical advice. This essential guide will give you an understanding of why self-directed education makes sense, how it works, and what to do to put it into action yourself. You may find the book on Amazon – click here or find it at your favorite book seller.
Dr Naomi Fisher is a clinical psychologist and EMDR consultant specializing in responses to trauma. She works with adults and children, including those with diagnoses of special educational needs. She has a PhD in Autism. She has hands-on experience raising two children as self-directed learners. Her writing has featured in The Psychologist, Tipping Points, The Green Parent, SEN Magazine, Juno and more.
We hope you enjoy this conversation with Dr. Fisher on how we can change the education system to help children to learn and grow in whatever way works best for them.

Change your brain, change the world with Dawson Church
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
10/08/17 • 42 min
We know we are powerful beyond what we realize and yet, we struggle to fulfill our potential.
Many of us use this struggle to reinforce self-defeating patterns, old thoughts and beliefs that keep us from tapping into the truth of who we are.
We are all part of an infinite super-intelligent mind that has the capacity to create in ways we maybe can’t even imagine.
But our brains - that place where we think our true mind is stored - are actually just organs, no different from kidneys, hearts, lungs and even skin....
The brain is part of the body and, like the muscles you try to work out at the gym, the brain can be trained and conditioned, strengthened and used as a master organ to create vitality, longevity and joy.
It takes self-mastery and a willingness to crack open the door to your perceived limitations to begin to use your brain better than you’re using it now.
Research shows that you don’t have to be stuck in old stories, limitations and pain any more. The brain and the body remembers and the memories keep us stuck. But with energy psychology techniques like the Emotional Freedom Techniques, we can liberate the body and the brain from the prison of our memory.
We are not trapped in our brain nor are we trapped by our biology. Our brains and our DNA are much more plastic than we think and with healthy practices and mastery we can begin to change not only our perception of who we define ourselves to be, we can literally change the DNA of our cells....
Imagine this for a moment. If you release the memories that are holding you hostage to a story that leaves you playing less of a role than you deserve, you unlock the potential you’ve been struggling with all of your life.
Not only that, you change yourself on a cellular, genetic level....
And you pass these changes on to your children...and their children’s children...and so on and so forth.
What if, by changing your brain, you change the world?

We think we need to “fight” for peace with Carla Goldstein
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
09/05/17 • 37 min
We think we need to “fight” for peace.
We take our anger and push against others who hold different views, different perspectives...we use the language of anti-this or that....we use the word resist and we spend our energy gathering ourselves against others.
There is a delicate balance between resistance, fighting for what’s right and using our energy to be fundamentally creative in order to create a true new world order... a new world order where compassion and unity rules.
The shift we are experiencing on the planet right now is creating in us deeply polarized perspectives and it’s easy to fall into a mindset of right and wrong, black and white, masculine and feminine....
But what we’ve learned from the past is that anytime we create “othering” of each other, we are at risk of de-humanizing each other.
And history has shown us again and again that when we dehumanize a set of people, it becomes too easy to justify marginalizing them or, even worse, hurting them or attempting to wipe them from the face of the planet.
It’s a slippery slope and, no matter what your perspective, we are all collectively vulnerable to sliding down that slope. Again, history shows us that “normal” people like you and me bought into ideals and perspectives - albeit oftentimes out of fear - that dehumanized a group of people and that de-humanization created terrible suffering on the planet.
If you look at an x-ray of a person, or look at their blood cells under a microscope, you wouldn’t know if that person is a racist, or African-American, if they were Christian or Jewish or Muslim, you wouldn’t know their gender preference or if they are vegetarian or a meat-eater.
Underneath our skin we are more alike than different.
If we are going to create a world where compassion rules, we can not fight each other in an epic battle of perceived right and wrong. Yes, we have to take action. Love is a verb and we have to disallow acts that are morally and ethically wrong and unacceptable in the name of LOVE.
But how do we create a new world order of love and compassion - how do we take right action and not continue to trigger polarized consciousness.
Please enjoy this powerful and vital quantum conversation with Carla Goldstein as we discuss how to take fearless action in times of disruption.

Love and Evolution with Paul and Layne Cutright
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
10/31/17 • 47 min
It’s interesting and a little bit ironic that, in spite of our enlightened awareness of the power of love and compassion, we still can struggle mightily in our personal relationships.
In my years as working as a psychic medium, one of the most common and often most charged questions people would ask me was, “Is the person I’m dating my soulmate?”
Soulmate. What a super charged word. We say the word soulmate and we have fantasies of the perfect relationship with the partner who is our mirror twin, someone who never says “no” to us, never challenges us and gives us a totally perfect union. No fighting. No power struggles. No leaving towels on the floor.
It’s interesting that many of us embrace the idea that we need struggle as part of our soul path. Struggle helps us discover what’s truly valuable in life and the depths of our capability and power.
But when we struggle in our relationships, we very easily slip into the old pattern of blaming our partner. She’s not “the one”. He’s not my soul mate.... He’s not on the same spiritual path as me...
Our soulmates are not here to co-sign on our dysfunctions and smile as us endearingly while we continue on the static path denial and blame.
Our soulmates arrive on the doorsteps of our hearts to challenge us, push our buttons, make our lives uncomfortable and show us the depths that our hearts can go to in this very human experience of Life.
Join me for this week’s Quantum Conversation with Relationship and Evolution Experts, Paul and Layne Cutright. We’re talking about love, true love and what’s up on the planet right now.
What Paul and Layne so beautifully demonstrate and teach is the power of self-awareness and the soul purpose of partnership as a key element for our own personal growth.
This life we are living is about being fully expressed soul energy in form. It feels like a nice theory but when we have to live it in our daily lives it can be a bit of a roller coaster. Our soulmates - our true soulmates - come to challenge us, push on us and inspire us to stretch beyond our limitations and to discover how to be and express love beyond the limitations of our human understanding.
The world needs love in action. The world needs an army of lovers who can set clear and loving boundaries, who can courageously reveal the truth to each other, who can see with fresh eyes what needs to be healed, released, aligned and brought into the Light.
Love, true love, is work. But it’s the work that will, ultimately, save the world.

The Illusion of Money with Kyle Cease
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
02/18/23 • 47 min
“This first voice will be like, what if we left this job right now?
And then the second voice will come in and be like, yeah, but if we do, we can't go to The Cheesecake Factory party next Thursday.
Then the first voice is like, dude, if you'd learn to listen to me, you’d own all The Cheesecake Factories in a month.”
Today’s guest, Kyle Cease, New York Times bestselling author, comedian, renowned public speaker, and the creator of Evolving Out Loud.
Our fixation with money often causes us to compromise who we are. We put off our authentic self-expression and the fulfillment of our dreams until after we have the money. When we internalize the message that it's not ok, or profitable, to be who we are and how we are, we stop ourselves short from accessing true freedom, our natural power, our creativity, and even our health and wellbeing.
Come along and have your illusions shattered on today’s powerful conversation with Kyle and Karen.

EARTHwise Constitution For a Planetary Civilization with Dr. Anneloes Smitsman, Ph.D.
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
01/13/23 • 39 min
“There's a place within yourself where you can retreat, where you can revitalize, where you can be fully who you are, where you meet life.
And when you find that place within, you expand it, make it bigger, breathe into that, and then bring energy from that space within you into your life, into your relationships, and into everything that you're doing.”
– Dr. Anneloes Smitsman
Join Karen Curry Parker and Dr. Anneloes Smitsman as they discuss creativity, systems, burn-out, and how we can use the imaginals within ourselves to continue our journey to the next level of evolution for humanity. The conversation cumulates in a beautiful explanation by Dr. Smitsman on her groundbreaking work with EARTHwise Centre to create the EARTHwise Constitution for a Planetary Civilization. Rather than the not-so-exciting constitutions we think about as they relate to the laws of humanity, this constitution is based on the principles of Earth jurisprudence and is intended to be a living document that evolves as our understanding of the world evolves.
“Within all of us already lives the evolutionary potentials of our next step. Remember that the very universe itself is coded and designed in order to evolve further and to develop the capacities for being able to do so collaboratively in a way that supports an increasing self-awareness at the individual and the collective levels.” – Dr. Anneloes Smitsman
Dr. Anneloes Smitsman, our guest today on Quantum Revolution, is a futurist systems scientist, award-winning pioneer in human development and systems change, and award-winning bestselling author. Listening to Challenges of Our Truth with Richard Jacobs
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
03/25/22 • 37 min
What is knowledge?
Who decides what is knowledge?
Or, on a more frightening note, what is truth?
We see this game being played out on many fronts on the planet at this very moment. During this season of Quantum Revolution, we heard stories from leading-edge scientists who are caught up in the reality of having to work around the system to share their research with the world.
In the next few episodes, you’re going to hear information and conversations that might challenge you on many levels.
Today’s guest challenged me to really hear someone else’s truth even though some of it is in direct conflict with mine.
There is a separate set of questions we also have to ask ourselves - especially during this time on the planet. If truth is malleable, who is right? What are the absolute truths and values that you choose to live by?
What if, together, we can find the solutions to the challenges facing humanity today - even if, individually, we are quite different?
Richard Jacobs is the co-author of the Finding Genius book series and the creator of the Finding Genius Podcast. Richard Jacobs indulged his fascination with technology by starting the Finding Genius Podcast (https://www.findinggeniuspodcast.com/). He didn’t know that it would end up taking him into hundreds of specialties in science, technology, and medicine. His book,
Finding Genius: Understanding Viruses: 30 Questions, 25 Geniuses, 100 Amazing Insights (https://www.amazon.com/Finding-Genius-Understanding-Questions-Geniuses-ebook/dp/B08WBW7JNT) is the result of 30+ interviews of genius-level science professionals.
Rich’s thousands of conversations with gifted scientists shows how much promising work is going on right now that risks being starved of the funding, visibility, and other support it needs to thrive, often due to politics and conflicts of interest. However, there is only so much one person can achieve on his own. That is why Rich set up the Finding Genius Foundation (https://www.findinggeniusfoundation.org/ ) as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit – to support this breakthrough work in a way that is sustainable.

The Ecological Impact of the Funeral Industry with Sandy Gibson
Quantum Revolution with Karen Curry Parker
03/11/22 • 35 min
On this podcast we talk a lot about sustainability and reframing the conversation around topics that seem sort of “certain.”
It is said that the only things certain in life are death and taxes.
Death, by definition, is not sustainable - or is it?
In America, the funeral industry is costly and environmentally destructive.
This is not the most comfortable conversation for many of us. We don’t want to think about death. But, as my guest today, Sandy Gibson, founder of Better Place Forests, shares with us, death is a sacred part of life and when we reframe the conversation about the ritual of funerals in the context of creating a sacred space for remembering, we can explore healthier and more sustainable options for all the phases of life.
Sandy Gibson is a man on a mission - a person with a clear Chief Aim and the passion and directive to fulfill it. I have to say that, while I was curious about having a conversation about the funeral industry and exploring more sustainable ways of honoring our loved ones, I was deeply impacted by Sandy’s personal journey with death - and life.
Obviously, the journey of processing a loss and turning it into some kind of greater purpose takes time. What Sandy so beautifully shared with his story is that tragedy, as painful as it can be in the moment - and the moments following - can also bring the seeds of purpose.
Viktor Frankl, the Holocaust survivor and author of the book, Man’s Search for Meaning, stated that “In some ways suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds a meaning.”
Sandy Gibson has done just that. He has turned the narrative around grief into a conversation about the sacredness of loss and turned the business of dying into an act of honoring in a sustainable and sacred way.
Perhaps the journey we take with death might seem less tragic if we fully embrace - with intent and purpose - the experience of Life.
Sandy Gibson is the Co-Founder and CEO of Better Place Forests, a sustainable alternative to cemeteries for families who choose cremation.
When Sandy was a young boy, he lost his father to a stroke and his mother to cancer. After years of visiting their graves in a dreary Toronto cemetery, Sandy began to imagine what a better place to remember his parents might look like. In 2015, he founded Better Place Forests with his two best friends to give every family the chance to visit and remember the people they love in nature.
Based in San Francisco, Better Place Forests launched America’s first conservation memorial forests in 2017. Better Place Forests has been featured in the New York Times, on the Today Show, and by the World Economic Forum. Known for its strong culture, Comparably recognized Better Place Forests with national awards for Best Company Leadership, Best CEOs for Women, Best Company Culture, Best CEOs, and Best Companies for Women in 2019 and 2020.
Sandy graduated from Princeton University in 2006 with an A.B. in History. A lifelong entrepreneur, he headed several companies and worked in finance and software before founding Better Place Forests. He previously served on the Board of Governors of Royal St. George’s College.
