Repeat guest Devin O’Shea regales the boys with a tale straight from ‘90s conspiracy theory culture. It concerns the prolific parapolitical researcher and St. Louis native Kenn Thomas. Thomas’ magazine Steamshovel Press made him a minor celebrity and earned mentions in The New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, and The Smithsonian. The magazine was also a source of inspiration for the writers of The X-Files. In 1996, Thomas published his career-defining book: The Octopus: The Secret Government and the Death of Danny Casolaro. The book weaves a complex tale of a massive conspiracy involving a journalist who died in an apparent suicide, Native American reservations, a state-of-the-art-security program, a source named Danger Man, the Contras, the Shah of Iran, and a private security firm called “Wackenhut.” Subscribe for $5 a month to get an extra episode of QAA every week + access to ongoing series like 'Manclan,' 'Trickle Down' and 'The Spectral Voyager': www.patreon.com/QAnonAnonymous QAA's Website: www.qanonanonymous.com Music by Pontus Berghe and Nick Sena. Jim Caviezel is the moist-eyed actor who played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ — and has since continued to do so in his own headcanon. He’s also a fan of QAnon, which is why we’ve covered him in the past: Episode 143, Enter the Cavortex, in which we found out how much of a nightmare he is on film sets, and Episode 238, Sound of Freedom, in which we explored his latest child trafficking summer blockbuster. The movie saw him play Tim Ballard, the head of tastelessly-named and questionably-run anti-child-trafficking non-profit Operation Underground Railroad ( OUR). But since the film was released — and promptly vaulted to the center of the culture wars — Ballard has stepped down from OUR, been accused of sexual misconduct, and was even denounced by the Mormon Church. We cover all of that in this episode with our guests: Vice journalists Anna Merlan and Tim Marchman, who’ve been covering Ballard and his organization for a while now. QAA Podcast - Episode 273: The Tartarian Empire
play

04/03/24 • 77 min

According to the Tartarian Empire conspiracy theory there once existed a massive, advanced regime that stretched over much of the Asian continent. This Empire’s power was so great that they built structures all over the world, including in Africa, North America and South America. Buildings such as the White House in Washington D.C. and the Great Pyramids in Egypt were built by the great, globe spanning Tartarian empire. They were able to accomplish this in part thanks to advanced technology that is lost to time, like batteries powered by the Earth which distributed electricity wirelessly. This theory has spawned a community of people who pour through old European maps and pictures of 19th century buildings in search of evidence for this lost empire, then post their findings on Reddit and Tik tok. But was there really a lost empire called “Tartaria?” Or have conspiracy theorists on the internet misinterpreted an archaic European term for parts of Asia then proceeded to desperately search for evidence of a better world that was lost to time? Americans sure love being paranoid. And they’re not always paranoid for sensible reasons, like ever-expanding corporate and governmental surveillance systems. Sometimes they’re paranoid about natural and predictable astronomical events. For this episode we discuss why the conspiracist world is fretting about the solar eclipse that will be seen across the United States on April 8th. We also chat with Arthur Goldwag, author of the recently published book The Politics of Fear: The Peculiar Persistence of American Paranoia. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/696775/the-politics-of-fear-by-arthur-goldwag/ Subscribe for $5 a month to get an extra episode of QAA every week + access to series like Manclan, Trickle Down, Perverts and The Spectral Voyager: www.patreon.com/QAnonAnonymous Music by Pontus Berghe and Jake Rockatansky.
