S2E13 - The Undertow Took Me w/ Krista Loughton
Push In - The CineVic Podcast
10/04/22 • 9 min
Host Joyce Kline catches documentary filmmaker Krista Loughton in the midst of Krista’s campaign for city councillor in the upcoming Victoria BC municipal election.
Krista describes a harrowing incident in Vancouver’s notorious Downtown East Side that inspired her 20 year career fighting homelessness and addiction through filmmaking.
Krista is widely known for the empathic documentary Us and Them (co-created with collaborator Jennifer Abbott) which followed the lives of four chronically homeless Victoria residents over an entire decade.
The film premiered on CHEK TV and has been shown more than 70 times across Canada—including an exclusive parliamentary screening for Canada’s Members of Parliament. It includes cameos by famed addiction specialist Dr. Gabor Maté, Indigenous leader Chief Phil Lane Jr, and “Reverend Al” Tysick, former director of Our Place community support society.
Though Krista initially thought Us and Them would be limited to her subjects’ day to day struggles, the film turned unexpectedly personal when Dr. Maté challenged her to examine her own personal pain.
Listen in as Krista shares with host Joyce Kline how Dr. Maté helped her, what’s surprised her about running for political office, and why she creates films specifically to influence politicians.

S2E16 - Electric Feel w/ Grady Lawlor
Push In - The CineVic Podcast
12/06/22 • 9 min
On today's episode, host Joyce Kline interviews filmmaker, podcast producer, animator and CineVic’s own Vice President, Grady Lawlor.
We all know filmmaking can be a pricey hobby. So why pay to put together a production when you can get the cast to bring you onboard?
Grady turned his love of filmmaking into a life of adventure and heart with wedding films. And if you watch closely enough, even a little bit of magic.
Through Evergreen & Bound Films, Grady and his partner Breanna capture what a day feels like. Representing this in an honest, compelling and thoughtful way.
On the show we cover camera gear, sound equipment and the basics of how to film a wedding that actually brings you back to exactly how it felt.
Joyce digs into Grady’s very own lost wedding ring story via a Tofino surf trip, torrential rain and a first time metal detector.
Fun fact – over 2 days Grady estimates talking to no less than 1000 strangers (aka new friends) while searching for his own treasure. All of them wondering what this smiley guy was looking for.

S2E7 - Love, Language and Soup w/Alayna Y
Push In - The CineVic Podcast
04/29/22 • 9 min
A young woman falls in love with a waitress in a greasy-yet-nostalgic Hong Kong-style cafe, but a language gap divides the two - or is there something more?
Animator and filmmaker Alayna Y goes back to her roots through food with the appetizing short animated film, Macaroni Soup.
An artist specializing in making soup - she throws people, experiences, and inspirations into a simmering pot. Whether it’s well-received or not, she’ll always make the soup she wants.
Join host Joyce Kline as she discovers the key ingredients that make Alayna's soup just right. Joyce gets the scoop on feedback that Alayna decided it was up to her to ignore and pave her own path.
For this ambitious project, Alayna pulled together a team of friends and collaborators from her cohort at Emily Carr University – even a composer friend from the internet.
Be sure to see Alayna's film, Macaroni Soup, in person at the opening night of CineVic’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival on May 1, 2022 (or streaming online May 8-31). Kick off the festival with a program of animations, anthropomorphized cats, and empowering dance.
Just don’t feel bad if you say the wrong ‘thank you’ to Alayna after the screening!

While the film never sugar coats the stress this caused Jamie growing up, it’s a triumph of love over tidying up. It was a hit in this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival and won Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Film at the 2022 Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon.
If you’ve ever considered making your family the subject of a film, this revealing interview might just give you the push you need to take the plunge.

S4E6 - Tender Masculinity - w/ Andrés Felipe Ángel
Push In - The CineVic Podcast
05/01/24 • 10 min
With all the talk about toxic masculinity, it’s a real treat to watch a film that explores traditionally held “masculine” qualities like aggression, competitiveness — even homophobia — while also acknowledging masculinity’s potential for tenderness, nurturance, and protectiveness. Working with amateur actors from the Bogotá barrio, filmmaker Andrés Felipe Ángel manages to pull that off and more in his sensitive autobiographical coming of age film Rage. It’s a real treat to hear Andrés share how he developed the film from a single visual image, why he’s a self-styled “cultural manager,” trends in Columbian filmmaking, being in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards, and finding the perfect litter of puppies he needed for Rage.
Andrés is an audiovisual producer and live performer in the Bogotá drag scene. His films include Rage — Fieras in Spanish — and Bogotá Se Quema. Rage screened at the Moscow International Film Festival and the Bogotá Short Film Festival, where it won Best Screenplay, Best Direction and Best Short Film and is in consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards. Now it will screen in this year’s Short Circuit Pacific Rim Film Festival.
