It’s a fun catch-up kind of episode this week, as we cover some big news from the past two weeks, including the reported casting of Robert Pattinson as Batman, HBO’s Watchmen teaser, Disney’s terrifying decade-long release schedule, Nintendo’s Super Mario Maker 2 Direct, and more! Jonathan talks about his delightful descent into masochism playing Cuphead on Nintendo Switch, and works through his feelings on the last two very bad episodes of Game of Thrones before this week’s series finale. And finally, Sean recaps a wonderfully weird mecha anime from the 80s, Armored Trooper VOTOMS, because it’s just too awesomely strange not to share with the world.

Purely Academic with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman - The Weekly Stuff #346 – Xbox Buys Bethesda, Super Mario Sunshine, and Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory
play

09/28/20 • 205 min

After an unplanned two-month hiatus, Weekly Suit Gundam – our sister podcast exploring the wide and wonderful world of Mobile Suit Gundam – is finally back, with a big in-depth review and discussion of Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, the OVA series from 1991 that provides some of the highest highs and the lowest lows in the entire Gundam franchise, and makes for one of the best critical discussions about the series we’ve ever had. Before cutting to the Gundam talk, though, we also break down the crazy news that Microsoft is buying Zenimax, the parent company of Bethesda, giving the Xbox brand ownership of Doom, The Elder Scrolls, Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and so much more. It’s a big development with countless implications, so many we can barely begin to cover them here. And finally, Jonathan also talks about finally finishing Super Mario Sunshine for the first time in his life, and he and Sean commiserate over the gauntlet of endless frustration provided by one of Mario’s only notable missteps.

Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:06:20

Super Mario Sunshine: 0:40:14 – 1:08:52

Naughty Dog’s latest, darkest, and most ambitious game to date has arrived in The Last of Us Part II, and today’s episode is a long, in-depth conversation about a game that is difficult to digest, but absolutely worth the effort of engaging with and discussing. The first game is, of course, one of our favorites – it was on both our Top 10 Games of All Time lists – so this sequel has been hotly anticipated. And while one of us has more complicated feelings about the final product then the other, we both agree that there’s an awful lot to talk about with this extraordinary sequel, from how it continues the story of Joel and Ellie, to where it takes some of the biggest themes and ideas from the original, to the new characters and environments it introduces, to the many gameplay improvements that make this one of the best-playing Naughty Dog games to date. This is one of the longest discussions we’ve ever had about a single game, but I also think it’s one of the most interesting, and I hope you’ll agree.

Enjoy, and if you need more Last of Us content, the first game happens to be one of the few we’ve reviewed multiple times on the show – here are links to all our Last of Us-focused episodes:

We have two game reviews and a big piece of gaming news on this week’s show, as we await a flood of film and game releases over the next few weeks. First, we talk a silly Star Wars title reveal and an amazing second trailer for Black Panther, before diving into EA’s closure of Visceral and the ‘redevelopment’ of their long-in-the-making Star Wars game, all of which is perhaps one of the most surprising industry developments in years. And for our reviews, Jonathan talks this week’s Fire Emblem Warriors for the Nintendo Switch, while Sean takes a belated look at the samurai action game Nioh on the PS4. Both are excellent games well worth your time.

Enjoy, and come back Wednesday for our third monthly classic Doctor Who bonus podcast, on the Third Doctor story “The Daemons.”

Doctor Who returned this week for its new season (Series 14, Season 1, or Season 40, depending on who you ask), the first full run starring Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor and Millie Gibson as companion Ruby Sunday. And the first two episodes were a ton of fun, particularly the formally off-the-wall “The Devil’s Chord,” which proves returning showrunner Russell T Davies is taking the show in a very different direction than anything we’ve seen before! But before that, we have to talk about the awful news from Xbox, where we learned Microsoft’s game division is closing two beloved studios: Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin. It continues a terrible trend from Xbox that keeps pushing the console maker in worse and worse directions, the culmination of a long series of frustrations we’ve been tracing for most of the lifespan of this podcast.

The original saga of Mobile Suit Gundam reaches its spectacular climax with Char’s Counterattack, the 1988 theatrical film that reunites Char Aznable and Amuro Ray for one final conflict, and sees Yoshiyuki Tomino and company bringing these characters, their story, and the major themes of the series up to now home with astonishing aplomb. As the first original movie in the franchise’s history, Char’s Counterattack boasts incredible production values and some of the greatest animation we’ve ever seen, but it’s also a deeply intelligent, incredibly thoughtful capper to all the big ideas, character arcs, and interpersonal conflicts broached in the original three TV series. And after spending so much time talking about the ingenious character creation that is Char, this movie gives us ample opportunity to put the character and his complex evolution in context, leading to one of the best conversations we’ve had about Gundam so far.

12/11/17 • 118 min

In the first of three podcasts this week – yes, we’re crazy – we discuss a week’s worth of movie and gaming news, including all the announcements out of the Game Awards, before diving into a long-promised topic: Our in-depth retrospective of the Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who, which will be coming to a close on Christmas day with the final Peter Capaldi adventure, “Twice Upon a Time.” This conversation was so large, we decided to split it into two parts. On today’s episode, we talk about the Moffat era as a whole, from the debut of “The Eleventh Hour” way back in 2010 to the most recent episodes we covered this year. We reminisce about covering the show in such depth throughout the decade, discuss which writers we loved most from the era, how the show evolved so much across six seasons and two Doctors, and more. And in part 2 of that conversation, which we’ll be releasing tomorrow as Episode #218, we rank all 39 Doctor Who stories written by Steven Moffat.

Enjoy, and come back tomorrow for Part 2 of this conversation, and on Wednesday for our fifth monthly Classic Doctor Who bonus podcast!
